View Full Version : Stop preparing for Cata!

I've seen quite a few posts from a bunch of you guys with what plans you have to "Prepare for Cata". I've been tempted to do the same, like making a bunch of gold, getting full PVE T10 gear, level more professions, level more teams so "I'm ready when Cata hits" etc. But then I realized, if I do all this stuff now before Cata, I might end up being bored 3 months after Cata release.

This is exactly what happened in S8, I rushed to do everything as fast as possible and now it's been a couple of months plus 4 more months to go until Cata of being bored. So total of 6 months of burn out because I was greedy and I wanted everything as quickly as possible.

So I stopped making any plans for Cata and whatever happens, happens. If I realize at the beginning of Cata that my current comp no longer works, no problem, I will start another comp. If I realize I need other professions to make money, no problem, I will level other professions.

This is just like when you have a hard project at work, and you start spending extra hours thinking that you have so much work to do. But work never ends, it will always be there, for the rest or your life, until you retire or die prematurely of too much stress.

So when the work day officially ends, you put aside all work, you free your mind of anything related to it, and you go home to family, wow, sports, whatever makes you feel good.

So if you give WoW the same treatment as work, there's a bigger chance you will keep enjoying it for a very long time, instead of having bursts of excitement followed by months of boredom between patches, expansions, etc.

I'm looking forward to start Cata, without knowing ANYTHING upfront. I'm going to stop hunting down Cata information as if it's a drug. If I happen to run into something on forums, fine, but I won't go out of my way to find out about talents, spells, professions, theorycrafting, etc.

I want Cata to feel like a new game for me, where I enter the world to have no freaking clue what to do or where to go. I want to be overwhelmed by the uknown ahead of me, instead of knowing everything upfront and rushing to be the first to hit 85, the first to have all the best PVP gear, the first to hit the JC market hard, etc.

So, in my opinion, if you're doing all sort of planing for Cata, stop and relax and do something that you feel like doing and you enjoy, instead of doing something that you think you HAVE to do it, otherwise you will be left behind when Cata releases.

We all play this game for different reasons, preparing for cata is fun to me and what I want to be doing.

I love the new expansion rush, getting to the new lvl cap really fast, etc.

I expect Cata will be out before I'm finished doing everything I want to do on my Paladin team anyway.

My thinking is along the same line as Firstcow so I canceled my accounts and decided to get back in shape. I'll reactivate them once cata hits and I see what combo's are what :)

Oz,

Yea, that's the beauty of blizz. They'll always figure out how to have something else to get :)

Same, but in general... not for a specific team.

Burnout is something all players deal with at one point or another, if a GOAL is to prepare for cata to have fun in the future then why stop?

Life has a way of keeping me from burnout.

About a month and a half ago, My power supply went up in flames, Then a few Appliances all went at the same time. Had a funeral I had to pay for right after Fathers day.

So I was offline for quite a while there. So I'm slowly getting back online when Boom, Keylogger discovered, and I wait in Cue to get my gear back.

But I believe JoeWunsch is correct here. I'm not so much worried about gear now, esp since I had some time away. sure I have three or four toons in 5400+ GS, But for me now, It's all about making some gold. Now I'll never be one of those guys who make 233 million or whatever the limit is, But a few mil would be nice going into the game.

Then when it hits, Gear from quests, The joy of putting teams all together as I hear CC will be big at first.

I look forward to new challenges like that.

the only thing i see worth of doing right now, is achievements for old zones and instances that will/might disappear in cata.
The rest will still be there tomorrow for us to do ;-)

It's tough enough to grind out the daily heroic anymore lol. Hard to have motivation for gear with the incoming gear wipe.

Everyone should have 'some' Catalysm preperation in mind imho. Things are going to be very expensive. Going into Cat without a nestegg means you'll be grinding gold from the beginning.

It may be six months away but that really is nothing. Sometimes I feel like I'm in a time machine it flies by so quickly.

My Cata prep is going to be :

1. Resubscribe
2. Empty bags
3. Decide which guild name to use.

I usually go after some kind of goals when I'm playing WOW. I just do so with the understanding that I might not complete them because I may burn out for a while, or I may find something else to do, etc. My friends and I had all kinds of plans for WotLK, then we all stopped playing WOW for various reasons.

I don't see a problem with preparing for the next expansion. Like others have said, I'll probably fall short of my goals. In my case it's because I'm not playing as much right now, and when I do it's unfocused (PL some toons, quest on another team, run a character solo, etc). But I do have some goals and when I find time I work towards them.

I burned out a month ago. Nothing in Cataclysm makes me particularly want to rush back in.

Yea your right i got so burnt out i took 8 months off the game. But when i came back i just came back with one account. I didnt want to play 5 and see that it was still no longer fun. But now that im enjoying it again i will bring them all back when my first accounts up for repay. Although, im not doing much in terms with getting ready for cat. Im not going to raid dont see the point at this time just to waste hours n hours to replace gear in one week in cat. I have all professions maxed but one. So i might go ahead and get that one maxed.

Then after that maybe get some more level 80's some im ready for the push. Although i will be taking an extra 2 days off work so i can get my team to 85 so i can exp end game asap on those. All i want is lots of gold on each toon and epic flying on each and ill be happy.

Nevermind my original post. I'm PREPARING FOR CATA HARDCORE!!! I'm leveling enchanting and going nuts on making gold. Hope to reach 1 million before cata. I will send a picture with my guild vault if that happens :)

I don't know what I was thinking... It's like there's 2 people inside of me.

I'm sure in a couple of months the other guy from inside of me will come out and make me write posts like "take it easy with WoW".

You are already almost there... at least you SHOULD be with all the fucking times you've run garfrost.

Well, I've wasted like 300k gold lately.

100k I left on my old server for a RL friend in case he comes back to the game.
100k I wasted on trying 5x enhancement shamans (50k just the hilts).
60k wasted on trying 4 warrior + healer.
40k lend to a friend.

So now I have to make up for all that.

If you do the garfrost trick for one hour per day you can get about 1.5k gold every day while watching TV if you also have a JC to cut the gems and put them in AH, and an enchanter to DE the epics that sell to vendor for under 10g.

I'm doing this for 2 hours per day + gems + leveling toons to 75.

Ancient Chinese Secret !!!

But in case you aren't ancient.... or chinese...

1. Use LFD Specific Dungeon tool. Port to Normal PoS

2. Kill Garfrost

3. Bail out , sell/DE loot

4. Rinse/Repeat

5. PROFIT !!!

my only Cata prep is wondering why the heck everyone thinks there is anything to prepare for.
whatever changes they make won't affect me today.
whatever changes I have to make I can't make until it's out.
why worry about something you can do nothing about.....
The only thing the release of Cata has done for me is to remove ALL requirements or incentives to do ANYTHING because it will all be obsolete on day one of cata.
my gear will be worthless so there is no point in getting more gear which was the main point of playing the game.
oh well.

But does this "trick" not run into the 5 dungeon per hour lockout? (If you are able to run as quickly as FirstCow)

I prefer doing BG's, eventhough that's a lot less gold. Besides that i only play 4 shaman, not 4 + tank. so would cut profit by 50%. I guess it could work pretty well.

Besides that i'd rather spend 1 hour / day doing AHstuff and probably earn more then mindlessly farm. I really really don't like farming :>

Crowdx,

Yes it can. However, If I find myself burning Garfrost down faster than normal (which is usually around 10 mins total), I just go ahead and pound Ick too. He is relatively easy on normal mode if you're geared, and the extra badge and epic doesn't hurt either. :D

If you use the dungeon tool to enter and leave the instance (the button on the minimap that says teleport out/in of the instance) then there is no restriction of 5 / hour. So first time use the LFD tool to queue your whole team, kill garfrost, reset instance, use the minimap button to leave/reenter instance.

You can do this forever and you will not run into the "too many instances" issue. But if you try to enter another instance in the normal way, not with LFD tool, you WILL get the "too many instances" message.

Now I'm having second thoughts for sharing this piece of information. I hope this is not a bug on Blizzard's part and it's actually a feature to be able to use the LFD even if you already did 5 instances in the last hour. If this is a bug and Blizz fixes it, then I will be screwed. It will cut my income by 4 since now I do about 20 garfrost kills / hour.

Firstcow
07-16-2010, 02:51 PM
I guess, if that happens, I will have to kill Krick too, that way at least I can get 2 badges in 12 mins, so 10 / hour.

It's not a bug. I talked to a GM about it.

I'd definitely bet it's a bug, and just because a random GM says it's fine doesn't mean a whole lot (how many of them thought multiboxing was illegal for the longest time?!).

If it was a bug and they fix it, it would mess the LFD tool. You would queue with LFD and when the instance pops you would not be able to enter the instance you did 5/hour already. So they would have to change LFD to not let you queue if you reached the 5/hour limit which would suck.

Please let's not talk with more GMs about this and make them have an urge to kill our source of income :)

doing two things to prepare for cata..
1) get more rep with wife to allow me to play more during first few weeks of cata
2) saving "gold" for 5 (and add 5 more accts) upgrade.

so, i can't stop preparing unless i don't want to play at all. :P
