18h00 ..
edit: meaning for june i've had a total down time of 10% which gets quite a lot. Some compensation one way or another would be something most companies would consider, however i don't expect it from blizz.

Reminds me of contracts for AT&T, Verizon etc for cell phones....
"Service is not guaranteed.."
(But we'll still charge you extra if we can!)
US on tuesdays is constantly down for extended maitenance, it's terrible.

As I understand it, they'll grant a free day here and there for downtime. I don't know if they ever do it for maintenance that runs longer than planned, though. They might feel that they don't have to. When my realm was down for 24-hour (planned) maintenance, I created a character on another realm and the starter area was packed. Some of the characters had names that were critical of Blizzard and were spamming complaints. But let's face it, we were there for our WOW fix, and for all of their griping, you can be sure that when the servers were back up they were logged in and grinding merrily away.
Granting compensation is probably a net loss for them most of the time, because players aren't going to quit over it. And as aggravated as we get when there is unscheduled downtime, we forget all about it once we can log back in.

I can remember a few free days during the Vanilla period. A couple times I believe the servers were down for a couple days. Still don't know how we organized 40 man raids... good (and bad) times.

You 'd wonder what making a customer happy (even if it's not strictly needed according to your tos) would do with your results in the long run. It doesn't have to be something that costs money, some goodies will do. Give every crafter a double result on their next 20h cooldown, give everyone 5 frost emblems extra, w/e will do.
Don't forget that a lot of players are emotionally tied to the game/their toon one way or another. If they feel unhappy due to whatever subjective reason, it's something you should care about as a company. Clear communication about what's going on (even if you have to make up something) will make your clients happy. Now their is a lot of frustration because they just edit some numbers (hours) in a very short post. If the players get the feeling (again something very subjective) that blizz put an effort into communicating with them, lots of those frustrations will be gone.

That's good thinking indeed. I bet a lot of the people posting QQ on forums would be satisfied if they got a non combat pet to compensate the downtime. A pet called "slacky" :D
hmmm. I just googled "slacky" and i'm affraid that's not gonna happen, reading what urban dictionary gives as definition.

During Vanilla (and maybe the start of BC) they did give everyone full rest XP after some server outages. That's a good example of non-monetary compensation since at the time everyone was leveling up.
With most serious players at max level I'm not sure what they could give.
