Until now i have been using /cast [target=party1target] 'spell name' for all of my commands
but i assume that is a pretty bad idea for pvp, and if my main dies i lose all control and i lose . period.
i have read all the threads about focus targets and i have no idea what any of the commands are supposed to do the guides list the commands in macro form and i have no clue what to do with them. what im saying is i don't understand your guide. sorry. could someone give me step by step instructions and spell out how to make focus commands so that i can make them in the future? i would greatly appreciate this and reward you with a picture of a cookie! :)
Set your focus to party1:
/focus party1
Target whoever your focus is targetting:
/assist focus
Cast a spell on whoever your focus is targetting:
/assist focus
/cast Whatever
or
/cast [target=focustarget] Whatever
Follow your focus:
/follow focus
You could bind different keys to /focus party1, /focus party2, /focus party3, etc to allow you to quickly switch focus to a different member of the party. If you've set up all of your spell casting macros to either assist the focus or cast at the focustarget, and your follow macro is set to follow your focus, everything will just automatically start working when you switch focus. You'll just have to start controlling whichever character you switched the focus to.
I hope this makes sense... :)

I tried something like this and am having problems with the party1, party2, etc. Essentially who ever I use the macro on assumes that they are party1. I solved it by using real names for the focus part.
/focus Mugnin
etc
It does mean I need extra keys, F1-5 for each party member, tab for follow on the alts. But it also means once a new character is in foreground I can play them as normal, makes quest looting so much easier.
What I really want is to change my cast macros to remove the Unit not Found error message.... I tried:
#showtooltip
/assist [exists,nodead] focus
/cast <whatever>
But that doesn't seem to work :(

how to change your focus:
/promote <newmain's name>
Just spam that button on all your characters. As long as one of them is party leader, they'll begin /assist'ing the new main.
