greetings joe,
account name: Ilovesatin
realm: Kil'jaeden
character name: Satinworship
account action: Warning
offenses: Naming policy violation - inappropriate
this category includes both clear and masked names which:
* are mildly inappropriate references to human anatomy or bodily functions

the name selected for this character has been deemed as inappropriate for the world of warcraft by the in-game support staff of blizzard entertainment. We will allow you a 7-day grace period to notify us of any potential naming violations on your account. Please take this opportunity to inform us of any further naming violations on your account so they can be resolved without further penalties to your account, by submitting an in-game petition on one of your characters that does not violate our naming policy.

How long did you have that name for?
Since I brought my priest over in Jan / February.
Well, I personally do prefer silk, but I think a warning due to your fabric preferences is a bit over the top.

When you toe the line, you have to expect that you exist at the sufferance of the gods. They've basically implemented the policy that anything that anyone/any group might find offensive can be actioned, but we won't enforce it unless someone reports you.
[mouth-breather edit] No, I wouldn't report anyone for this or most any other naming violation and, frankly, you'd have to pull some heinous grade-school-stupid shit to get my attention. But then, neither am I one of those panty-twisted morons who thinks they have the right to not be offended. :p

05-05-2010, 07:43 PM
You obviously love satin and silky fabrics I don't see the problem
But...happens to the best of us. They made me change one of my guys years ago Holycrap =( Wish I'd saved the letter I had a funny dialogue with the GM. They said that I couldn't have Holy because it was in reference to a diety. So I said well then it's ok to just name myself Crap?!
That's why I made a name like Jinkobi completely homemade name lol, they can't say CRAP about that.
really?? That's laughable considering my warlock has a dominatrix for a pet. It's a game of killing and looting and someone gets offended by that? I'd email them back and ask them to explain how someone worshiping a textile could possibly be considered offensive. Little good it would do though.... sorry for your loss.

If they want to be so 'clean' with the players names as they might maybe perhaps sometimes offend a single player, they better filter their content as well.
I remember a quest where you had to go in a cave with a key: 'so long suckers, i'm outa here' (think his name was grmbl or something).
Also the daily quest in icecrown (think its called attack by ground, the escort one). When you are done the guy says 'blood and honor friend'. Blood & honor is one of the bigger nazi clubs in europe ..
Etc, etc, the list is endless.
Fursphere
05-05-2010, 08:10 PM
My very first character - Fursphere - was originally named "TheFuzz" - a year after I created the character I was forced to change it. /sigh
I would personally call Blizzard and plead your case. Because someone can't READ, you shouldn't be punished for it. I included the word "THE" so I was clearly in violation - even thought I didn't know of the rule when I named my character .

Back in the day, Right at the time they started to launch the Armory all 4 of my slave accounts got the same warning. They were all named Alysca with accent marks over the first or last A. Back then I guess it was a violation but not now it seems.
I would contest it. Its not your fault the people who complained cannot read.

I think they are cracking down on it as of late. This last weekend, I transfered one of my pallys over to my main server, and went with Heeblonzo.
Lonzo being a running joke with my guild, as I have Farlonzo,Waylonso, Nearlonso, etc. etc. A friend of mine is big into Hockey, and there is a canadian player with the name Heeb. Thought it would be a good play on words, and a laugh for the two of us.
Of course, they went all anti-archie bunker and had me change it.
Now he is simply Dudelonzo... Or the dude playing the dude disguised as another dude! since all my other pallys look alike.

did you really name the toon thinking about worship of the textile ... or did you just think it would be cool to have a toon with a name that was a play on Satan Worship ?
if your really into worshipping Satin ... its kinda weird and kinky ... but hey ...
but if in your mind you thought it was a nifty way to do a word play of Satan Worship then the name change was justified according to the rules Blizzard set fourth ...

It's not because people can't read. Svper didn't name it for a worship of fabric, it was meant to push the edges and be funny. It's alluding to Satanworship, which would be an actionable name so the ever-conservative idiots at blizzard decided to just ban any names which any person for any reason may be offended by.
Luckily nobody has reported my DK yet, Chaji is about the filthiest word in Korean lol. Would be a permanent ban on KR servers, im sure LOL.
Sorry Svper, I hope you choose an even better name next time :P

"Ilovesatin" is also against the rules as being a complete sentence.
Of course, it is a deliberate misspelling of satan, which is a good enough reason to force a rename.
Really, the title of this thread tells us exactly how interested you are in provoking, rather than thoughtful discourse.

A Community Representative once told us, when asked on the European official forums, that their naming policy is to be respected by players not by the dev team. if I remember correctly there was a drama where a player was reported to have chosen a pun as a name, similar to one that exists in the name of a NPC.
Also, if you are on a role playing server, the naming policy explicitly forbids names made of "partial or complete sentences"
(see http://www.wow-europe.com/en/policy/namingp1.html for the complete policy).

Well... I Love Satin, is the account name, and not the character name.
Satinworship is not a name I would choose.
But it doesn't violate the naming convention, even if it is very close to something which would.
There are thousands of names which are wrong.
But which last and probably should not.
It's probably not worth your time, but you could report the others too.
If they want to enforce the naming policy on your toons, then they cannot complain when you report infractions to them.

ilovesatin was just something I put to replace the actual account name. I posted hoping this would provoke conversation about the topic. Specifically how the only time Blizzard enforces their naming policy is when someone complains, or when a GM is forced to look at your name (someone reports you / you submit a GM ticket). I think it's 100% horse shit that the GM looked at my pending ticket and saw my name, and issued a forced change and didn't even acknowledge my pending ticket. I can only assume it wasn't a player report, but there is no way to be sure.
Yes, I choose the name because it was "edgy" and a play on words. Mainly because I'm not satisfied to be "OCHOCINCOLOL" or some other retarded pop culture meme. All of my names, nicks, and any other reference to my characters or anything else always has a meaning behind it or is a play on words or something to that extent. I'm not trying to QQ about having my name changed. I had 3 shaman, named Menage, Aahh, Trois, for over a year. Not once forced a name change. So group sex across 3 toons is fine, but cloth worship? NOOOOOOOOO we can't have that, it may upset some god believer.
Toon names are meant to push the boundaries of the naming policy, if you don't think so, you're not paying attention or you're on an RP server where people actually care about what other people name their toons.

I guess the point though is that the name had nothing to do with cloth worship... It was a play on words as you said yourself, which negates any sort of "innocent accident" defense you might have. "Oh, I just liked the name Mohammed, I had no idea that some cultures find using that name offensive" could be somewhat innocent. Your case is the opposite of this, where you intentionally referenced something you knew would require a change.
Yeah I do think that its dumb that stuff only gets forced to change if it gets noticed, but how else would they do it? This sort of thing needs a human eye, I guess they could pay some intern to just stare at character names all day long.
"I....warship.... Satin?" "Excrement!" 2 bucks for anybody who gets the reference =)

They're giving me the opportunity to change any other names I have for free. This isn't an attempt for them to push paid name changes. They flagged me for a rename on the first offense, (which is the same thing they did to me a few years ago on another toon). The only incidents that I'm aware of where THEY choose your name is if you get flagged for a change, and you pick something else unreasonable or against the policy. I stupidly immediately chose "Satanworship" knowing full well it was against the policy. I wanted to get in game so people could recognize me and what was happening. People can get uppity when the GM suddenly has a name change. Once I realized Satanworship wasn't in my best interest (IE I'd get reported in a heartbeat and I wouldn't be able to pick my name this time) I went a head and spent the $15 on a character re customization. Sure I could have just spent 10 for the name, but I decided to go ahead and swap to female. Male priests have a very negative connotation to me, thanks Catholicism. So for me spending the $15 was a choice of I can do it now, or later when I GM renames me to hellokitty. I chose now cause I'd never live down hellokitty. And thanks to my raid team I'm now called whore anyway since they all fail at etymology of my brand new heretic name.

Whats the new name Svper?
The thing that amazes me is that they'll bother changing a name, yet people spamming racial epithets or talking about raping people's mothers in trade chat seems to be perfectly OK.
Blizzard's attempts to police this kind of stuff seem at best schizophrenic. Personally, I think they ought to make a couple of servers where "anything goes" as far as names, speech, whatever, so people who don't want to deal with the various rules can have a place to do whatever, and then anyone on the other servers who violates the rules won't have room to complain.
Given some of the things I've said in game, I should probably be banished to one of those servers myself :D

I agree 100%. What the hell is the point of the "report spam" function when nothing ever happens to the idiots who are spamming?
Kil'Jaeden alliance trade chat is a melting pot of Rape, Gay Sex, Religious Slander and other general idiocy. And I report spam it sometimes, and it never changes.

The report spam button only really works when they've sent a message to hundreds of individuals through whispers - it needs a LOT of people reporting spam to be flagged as such.
For trade, I usually ignore it, but in some particularly egregious cases, I'll report it, with a cut and paste of some of the choicer comments in the ticket. That works pretty well, actually.
Mind you, this isn't for people who drop a few profanities from time to time, but more like people whose every utterance is rife with stuff that sounds like a cross between a KKK meet and a NAZI rally, blended with Eric Cartman in an uncensored Tourette's frenzy.

I have maxed out ignore lists and have been capped on reporting people for spamming

It's that arbitrariness that can catch you unawares and irritates people so much. I don't think there's much to be done about it, the game has become so large that Blizzard has taken a "you never know" approach to policing stuff like this. I bet that there are some very very amusing cost-effectiveness memoranda floating around the executive offices over there.
One of my characters was once renamed as well.
But that character deserved it. Happy i got no temporary ban for it.

Folks thought my name was funny and no one reported me. I GM noticed me and forced a change.
I got busted pretty quick but my buddy managed to dodge the GM's in-game for quite some time before being forced to change it. I think he was reported by someone in a PUG.

I knew he had a name change when my gear no longer said <Made By Valium> and a GM had force renamed him a name with the letter cap. It was like Xuahguehfjghdx or something totally unreadable.
He had to contact a GM to get it changed to something else. Was pretty hard to invite him to groups for awhile. :P
The sad thing is, someone on our own faction reported him because he beat them to tagging a mob. He had PvP'd heavily with the character and had heaps of HK's and nobody ever reported him. Goes to show the dicks are always on your own faction.

I had a buddy that started a guild named "Pallus Vendor" and they would go stand next to other vendors around towns, it was damn hilarious. they had to rename obviously. My favorite was a guy named capnjacksparrow which was forced into being Scurvydog (they picked it for him, he didn't even get a choice lol).

What's a Pallus? Is it a phallus only smaller?
The best name I've ever had was when my male druid was named Dendrophilia. Never did get reported, but changed the name when he became an alliance she.
Sorry to hear Satinworship got hit with the name stick, but I've always preferred leather.

I'm one of those people who report names _all the time_. I am on an RP server though.
Being 'clever' with names will draw attention to you and give others a chance to mess you about by reporting you. The best thing to do is be creative and stick to the rules.

yeah thats why I posted here about it, it's definitely not ideal for the GM to get a name change without warning the guild.
I will join you on this wagon :D
My chars name is Weedpower. Cracks people up, but I guess it's an offensive name as well.

The first guild my friends and I formed was named <Paladins are Gay>
It actually took a few months before someone reported it and it was disbanded. We were surprised it lasted as long as it did.

I've never had a name reported, but a guild I was in got reported and force name changed. I guess 'Child Fantasy' is inappropriate, heh. A college buddy leveled a rogue to 70 in BC with the name Jizrag reported (his nickname irl, sounds very very close to his last name spelled backwards), but his other char Waginas never got reported that I know of.
If it were up to me I'd make the naming policy much stricter. I hate extended ascii characters in names and all the grey area ones like 'stabstabdead' (34 in the armory) or 'smokeweed' (59 in the armory) or 'pallytank' (114 in the armory -.-)

Why? And no, I wouldn't. Pedophil is a fictional character... not real... no threat to anyone as far as I know. This game is violent and, at times, sexually suggestive, but that is overlooked by people that have an axe to grind. It's amazing to me how people can apply morals to only part of the game and conveniently disassociate their morals from the rest of the game. It seems to me that people that are offended by screen names in this game, probably shouldn't be playing the game. What about what's happening on the rest of the screen? Shouldn't they find that offensive too? .... I'm actually more afraid of those people. That's just my opinion though.

Had to rename 5 characters :( The name is really common too (totenkopf, childish I know but I hate naming chars and if I have a book open or DVD on I normally just pinch a name from that), there is even multiple guilds called it. Got a 24 hour ban on each account too.
Only time I've ever been banned in a game for anything. Nevermind :)

What? Totenkopf is against the ToS?
[edit] Well, I looked at the ToS and I don't see anything obvious. I suppose it could be loosely interpreted as falling afoul of either the "no titles or ranks" or maybe the popular culture thing. Bit of a stretch, though, IMO.
If it's the generally "otherwise objectionable" thing, then that definitely falls under the "throwing out the baby with the bathwater" heading.

I have changed my chat box font to a mono spaced font which helps. Someone people use macros that are for mono spaced fonts and some do not. The extra commas, semi-colons, and what not are there to help correct the spacing for non mono spaced fonts.

Indeed. It's not really funny, or witty, or even trollworthy.. It's just flat out stupidity. It's also the fastest way on to ignore lists. But, I guess if you want to be a "rebel" and you "don't give a shit".. it might just be that little bit that helps you cry yourself to sleep at night.

" its association with aspects of Nazi Germany has perhaps accelerated its decline as societies remove the most morbid symbols from their military uniforms."
It's a stretch, but then... most times names get reported/force changed its for something as mildly stupid as a stretch. A few other things it could trigger: "Have any national connotations" "Are mildly inappropriate references to human anatomy" (Skull and Crossbones) "Are references to very well known people, characters, places, or icons"
Also, naming policy does not extend to Guild or Arena teams, just personal character names.

Actually, the first thing that came to my mind when I saw the name was the SS nickname "death's head" - so I don't know that it's much of a stretch. It's a term in use by some white power and other neo-Nazi groups, and certainly a pretty common referent to the Nazi era.
I've seen a few references to things like that in game, actually - there was, at one point, a guild named "Wight Power" (all Forsaken, of course) and their leader was EightyEight. EightyEight, or 88 is actually a pretty common symbol amongst white power and neo-Nazi groups as it refers to the 8th letter of the alphabet (H) twice - or "Heil Hitler." It sounds incredibly stupid and childish and overly convoluted, but then again, nobody ever accused white power and neo-Nazi groups of being the brightest.
Normally I don't bother reporting people unless they start going over the line (whatever that is) - in the case of names or symbolism of hate groups, it winds up creating an atmosphere that's unpleasant, so I'll probably report those. In the case of Totenkopf, I'd *probably* tell the person what it meant first and suggest that they report themselves to get it changed so they don't get in trouble for an accidental choice. If someone's being a schmuck in other ways and they happen to have a reportable name, I admit, I'll report 'em for the name just to cause them some grief :)

What I hate are the 12-13 year old kids who create their first character and immediately name it something puerile or simple like 'imatank'.
It takes just a couple of minutes to grab a sci-fi/fantasy book and look up a character name. I used to role play years ago, so I got pretty good at creating realistic sounding names and using them.
There is one guy on Anachronos who has named all his toons for SG1 Atlantis characters.
