View Full Version : Leveling through Random Dungeons?

I have multi-boxed before but not anything past 20 (trial accounts :\)
I am almost sure now that I am going to start a serious team as I have the money and soon the time to do so.
I really only want 4 accounts and I want shamans for my first team. I am not a fan of collection questions and questing in general. I have also attempted to solo instances with all shaman and all druids (shaman didn't work but druids did but with insane timing).
Here is my idea: I level 4 shaman and once I reach 15 I queue for random dungeons as a healer and 3 dps. Since I am queuing with a healer the pops are going to be just about instant.
So here is my Q: Should I bite the bullet and quest 1-60 with my RaF or should I just relax and run dungeons? (Has anyone proven one faster than the other?)
I've been mostly running random dungeons with my 5 paladin group since I hit 15. I stray out of the dungeons to do the quest lines or the dungeon quests, and I level the last three levels of each PVP bracket in battlegrounds to spice things up. It's been fun levelling this way, although it feels a bit lonely just doing dungeon after dungeon. :)
I haven't been paying much attention to my levelling rate, so I'm not sure how this method of levelling compares to questing. I would guess that it would be possible to level faster through questing.

boosting will be your fastest bet, if you really just want to get to level 60 as fast as possible. If boosting is not an option, then questing will be faster than doing dungeons at the normal pace, however if you hate questing, then you should definitely level through random dungeons. Also I think the 'instant queue' idea depends on your battlegroup. On my battlegroup healers and dps wait at least 15-20 minutes, sometimes much much longer during off-peak hours and in lower level brackets, but tanks are instant.

The RAF boosting will be faster.
If you've got RAF now, I'd recommend boosting to take advantage of it, as it is only for 3 months, and is an enormous boost over not having RAF.
However, this is a game, so go with whichever will be the most fun.
If instances will be the most fun, maybe level your last set via instances.
Or your first if you prefer.
You can also run battlegrounds, for experience, as another option.
I'd personally want 4-5 sets of five toons, from RAF.
Just to provide flexibility, so you can play whatever PvE and PvP styles you choose in the future.

I leveled the last 5 levels from 75-80 on my main through random dungeons.
It proved a great lesson for me in the mechanism of the encounters, but I didn't get the dailies unlocked. Gonna do the quests now with my team to get everyone to 80.
For my paladin team (currently lvl 13, lol) i'm probably gonna go the same way as Qbox, since I don't have RAF - but i'm waiting for enough shards to be able to buy the +xp heirloom gear. Until then I won't touch the paladins.

Nope. I've been leveling a priest when I'm not raiding, and queues are anything but instant. It generally takes anywhere between 1 and 30 minutes to get a group. There have been a couple occasions where I'd sit in the queue for almost an hour before giving up for the night. I'd assume tanks are similar if there aren't many healers, but the pool of players at low levels is so small you're not going to get instant queues unless you have a tank+healer in your group when you queue.
It's still a great boost in exp and gear when leveling, but you'll be sorely disappointed if you rely on it for all your exp and not plan on questing.

This could also fall into the category of battleground queue times...both which vary from battlegroup to battlegroup.

I did a 4x druid team. The last 20 or so levels, I did entirely in the random dungeons. Signing up Tank/Healer/DPSx2 I pretty much never had to wait unless it was really late / early in the AM. I think one of the things that made it go so easily, was having 3 HOts + 3 Heal+HOT (Rejuv + Regrowth) able to be cast inside of a few seconds to the tank.
I enjoyed it quite a bit. There were only 2 fights I couldn't get But I think it was because I was below level. Princess in Maraudon, and Eranikus in ST.
The Bags sucked IMO. I always got caster crap on my tank, and melee crap on the Oomkins and Tree.

Yeah, it's not the healer that causes the delay from my experience. It's the tank. Friend and I can queue as healer / dps and we wait for 15 minutes. We queue as healer / tank and it's instant.
Oh, and I'd recommend a mix. You should at least boost through SM if you can. It's an EASY 15-20 levels or something. Questing 45-60 is pretty painless. 52-60 is easy because of the cauldron quests.

I find the opposite, at least around 75. Today, I hit the LFG on my healer, and before I closed the window the queue popped. Cannot ask for faster, so I make sure I am ready to party before I hit that button. On KJ, there are some players in LFG mostly they are croos-realm. Which is good and bad, you do good, you don't get the friend links, you do bad (tank) they won't see you again...they hope. Yes I am talking about my terribad DK .

shaman didn't work
How come? I think that using shamans at lower levels should prove a lot easier than druids. Maybe you're just doing it wrong? You said you ran it up to level twenty, so just in case here are a rough way at those levels.
Before:
1. drop all searing totems.
2. lightning shield on.
3. flametongue weapon on.
Pull:
4. Lightning bolt twice from distance (don't shock) before they get to you.
5. Drop all/round robined stoneclaw totems.
-- From here the monsters remaining, be it two or three will attack the totems and you can pick them off one-by-one. It does work if you do it right. I cleared all dungeons up to heroics content with 5 elemental shaman with gear from mid 70s on all.
