Post Edited: 2008-01-20.
Guide last updated: 2008-01-20, updated the layout, added some more information. New better layout on the keybindings.
Can you guys who has more knowledge then me read thrue the guide and let me know what you think about it. I have spend alot of time doing the guide for newcomers as me. Most of the information is from the users here on dual-boxing.com so i cant take any credit for it. I just put all things in one place for newcomers. Therefore it wount include all aspects.
Here is a link to it: http://www.digitek.se/dualboxing/Beginners_Guide_2_Dual-Boxing.pdf
(Ill promise you that you dont have to be afraid to download this PDF file)

Read it for a bit and it's quite nice. Not much that isn't available ofcourse, but definately a nice howto/tutorial with everything in one place to get people started. Nice work :>.

Being new to multi-boxing, I think I can give you some constructive input. The guide was good, but the one thing I think it is lacking is good explanations of what is being done.
For example, you say to download and install keyclone. It'd be nice to have a paragraph explaining what keyclone does and why you need it.
Also, there's lots of screenshots and good explanation on how to install and setup WoWAce, but no explanation about what it is and why to install it.
So, my only recommendation is to not only tell us what to do, but why to do it (what that action will add)
first off, nice one for putting all that information in one place, with images etc. :)
however, just a little constructive criticism for ya ;)
You say people need to make seperate WoW folders for each copy of WoW you will be running, this isn't actually necessary and running from less - 2 (one for main, one for all followers) or even from a single directory like I do can help to increase performance quite a bit!
Secondly, it might be an idea to add a bit in the keyclone setup section about "run aways" i.e. if people add wasd (or whatever they use for movement) to their no-pass list pressing a modifier key (shift/ctrl/alt), then a movement key, then releasing the modifier key before the movement key can cause your followers to get that movement key"stuck" down, making them run in that direction till the key is pressed again on each char. So i would say to add the following to the no-pass list aswell :
left/right alt+w/a/s/d
left/right ctrl+w/a/s/d
left/right shift+w/a/s/d
apart from that, very good job :D

Cheers rocknroll and hxc. This is exactly the kind of information i need. I cant call it critics, more like useful information how to get the guide even better.
I know i have missed alot of information for the readers, but are trying to collect more now since my post on the forums. I wanted the guide out there asap, and also its my setup i use and it works for me. (explained in the guide). So therefore i cant promise its the best setup, macros, and so on for some others.
I will add it to the guide and re-upload it as soon as i can. I will be away from home this coming week working so the guide will be updated later next week.
Again, thanx for the information, you are more then welcome to add more suggestions, critics so i can get the beginners guide as good as possible.
One thing to remember doh, it will be a "beginners guide". Not to technical with all aspects included since it will be to much to read and remember.
We must stick to the simplicity as much as possible and a fast way to get the software setup to get it work. After that the newcomers can ask / read more how to setup a more advanced setup here on the forums.
Is this a bad idea? Suggestions please. Ps im still a beginner myself, thats why i need more experienced users to keep me up with some important information.

Hi PJ,
yes.. keeping it focused on the beginners would be better. it'd have the most impact that way.
one section you may include is hardware. cpu, graphics cards, system memory, hard drives, multi-monitors... basically the core components of a multi-box rig. this would resolve the 'will my box handle 2+' kind of questions. i would guess there would be 2 types. the basic 2 or 3 boxer on 1 pc and the 5 boxer on 1 pc. probably only a couple of pages each.
either way, i think your pdf should be stickied in the beginner's haven. and if you put it on a static url, i'll include a link to it on the keyclone base page (my tutorial is put to shame with your first shot)

Cheers for info keyclone. About the PDF it will be static as long as you like, so feel free to put a link on your webpage. 8)
PS.. sry for messing up your tutorial :whistling: DS.
I will update the guide and delete some not so serious information from me, also im telling some of the things 2-3 times (about flaws, errors etc) i will delete that and try to fix the layout even better.
About the hardware chapters, is there someone who can bring me some information about what the Req´s are for a 2-3 boxing setup, also if someone that runs a 5-box on a single PC can add some information about what hardware you need to be able to run it. I cant say i have the latest PC hardware myself but its quite new and good, so i dont have any problems running 3-boxing. I cant say my hardware setup is the req the users must have to be able to play 2-3 boxing. So...what is the lowest??? or should i just put in a prefered hardware setup. Win XP/Vista, a dual processor, at leats 2 gig memory etc etc.
This guide will focus on be able to run multibox from a single PC. If people want to add more PC´s they have to look it up in the forums. Maybe later the guide can expand and have this kind of information but not at the moment.
Advice, information are welcome.

/ PJMy problem with this is you have it has a PDF and you are not a active member... So I do not think alot of people could trust a link like that. I know I don't BUT I clicked it anyways. I suggest writing a HTML text based on and make a new thread.
I also want to add... Its seems like you covered much of what anyone can read it the beginners section. You did touch base on Setting up macros better. But the WoWAce updated... I dono. and we have a Maximizer how to guide already.
Overall. Looks good. I like the bindings and key bindings part.

Hi Diamndzngunz ('http://www.dual-boxing.com/forums/index.php?page=User&userID=1888')
Yep i know and understand you, well i will try to sort a html page for the guide instead of an PDF file (I know people are afraid of PDF files these days). The problem i have at the moment is that when i started with the guide i was using (still am) Microsoft OneNote since it is a great app (using it alot in work) . But it has its limitaions to export in html format :S . So therefore im fixing the layout right now to get an even better PDF file, and hopefully as soon as possible sorting a html page for it. It will allways be static doh, its on my own companys web server im paying for. About beeing active member. hmm well no i aint :whistling: . I registered a couple of days ago, playing WoW for fun, the rest of the week im taking care of my company, daughter and wife so i cant find the time to post here regular ;) .
Im not sure if you got me right about my guide ?( , im not trying to "take over" the guiding world here :D . Nearly all information is from the forums, just put together in one place. The problem all Forums (not just dual-boxing.com) has is that you cant find a proper place for information. I dont say that the information isnt there becourse it is, and forums saves our lifes, BUT the information is spread out in way to many posts. OK i know i will get critics for saying this and alot of people will say. Hey dumb ass... :cursing: you got the search function. Ok , ill agree with that we have a search function and its great.... but where do that leads us? in my case it leads me to read all kind of different post before i find the thing i was looking for, even thrue using search function. So to get back to what i was talking about is that for newcomers you want one post with the info you need to get started, all in one place, not to spend hours of reading how to get started. All the information is allready in the forums but kinda hard to find (thats the way i think. not saying everyone thinks the same) And dont forget that we are talking about newcomers now. If the users want more information how to do things in another way they just use the forums.
Well now some might say, hmm you can post the guide in the forums. Well i can, but i cant get enough space in each post as i want, and many of the users today have a printer at home, with the PDF file they will be able to print it out, setup there multiboxing needs and follow the guide in their knee. An easy way, try printing an forum post on a printer, messy huh? ?(
Sorry for sounding rude, thats not my meaning  . Im just trying to explain why i started the guide. I have read alot of the guides over here and most of the information is from them, thats why im stating in my guide that i cant take the credit for it. Its all the others information just put together in one place. Maybe i have been taking wrong information into the guide, and thats why im having this thread, to get more information, credits etc from other more experienced users.
Again my friend, cheers for information and thanks for reading the guide and letting me know what you think, ill hope you understand that this post isnt to give you any critics (i agree what you are saying to me), ill just trying to explain why i took my time (dont even know anyone on this forum) and wrote the guide ill hope can get newcomers starting multiboxing in a easy way.

I downloaded the program although i can't use it without a key. Your english is very good, for a second language, some minor errors but overall a good guide. :D

Brilliantly done. But I'm having a slight problem. The link you added that has the .rar with the addons you use. I unzipped everything into the Interface>AddOns folder and started WoW up, and noticed none of the add-ons were listed when I clicked the button. I double checked to make sure everything was where it was supposed to be and it was. But I did notice that in the AddOns folder on my main account has seperate folders for each add-on I use. Was wondering if this is the reason why it's not loading properly.

Im not home this week since im working away from home, so i cant fix it until im home at friday.
Thanx all for good info and responses, thats keep me up to do the guide even better.

Ok, I've done most of the guide but there are some things I'm wondering about.
My current plan is to make 2 shamans (got 2 accounts already) and dualbox them.
As the guide was pretty easy to follow, going from 3 to 2 was no problem (I guess).
But... my WoWAce shuts down after a while (WoWAce has stopped working), no matter what I do. I've done what I'm supposed to do with it but it's pretty worthless if I can't have it up?
I'm not ready to pay the Keyclone bill if it won't work anyway.
I hope I can get some help here :P

I have a question about the addon package. When I download it, all it has in it is a bunch of "addon files" but not the actual addons in their individual folders, and Aceupdater isn't recognizing them installed because they aren't really "installed properly" since they are not in individual folders. Any ideas on what i'm doing wrong?

Hi folks,
First post so go easy. In all these guides it shows you splitting your monitor in to 3 or more sections so you can view each acct at the same time. Is this actually necessary though? If you have just the main acct showing on the top and the others hidden behind does this make the game unplayable when 3 or more accounts? Not sure why you have all the accts showing anyway as if you are grouped you should be able to see what is happening to the others anyway?

I was told that each char should have his own WoW exe b/c it makes it run smoother/faster.

I was told that each char should have his own WoW exe b/c it makes it run smoother/faster.That I have no idea about from a hardware stand point it can increase performance in actually loading something because two programs won't be fighting over the same file. However over time it may decrease performance simply because of fragmentation. I would suggest defragging it about once a week.
So,
I just started to research keycloning, and I have the hardware specs for it. I have two computers, one of which that can handle 4 accounts at the same time. I heard Autohotkey was a good start. I have it now, but every time i run the scripts(given to me in various guides) I get an error return. Looking for advice from those who have started this successfully. Let me know, as I think 5X wow might actually challenge me.
Thanks,
Xaga

Thanks Hxc i have been wondering about this for ever since i started. I thought it was a memory problem or something. Is there any other way around it? Does this mean i cant use modifiers for buttons on slaves?

Being new to multi-boxing, I think I can give you some constructive input. The guide was good, but the one thing I think it is lacking is good explanations of what is being done.
For example, you say to download and install keyclone. It'd be nice to have a paragraph explaining what keyclone does and why you need it.
Also, there's lots of screenshots and good explanation on how to install and setup WoWAce, but no explanation about what it is and why to install it.
So, my only recommendation is to not only tell us what to do, but why to do it (what that action will add)
Having multi-boxxed for years on Everquest and at least one year on World of Warcraft, this guide, although good, has some things that need to be corrected. This is meant to be a constructive critism of the guide. Here are the points that I believe need to be corrected:
1. In your introduction, you may want to mention that the guide as written, discusses the game of World of Warcraft. The guide goes almost straight into talking about shamans and Horde without mentioning they are being referred to in World of Warcraft.
2. In section 1.1 where it says "Why do I need Keyclone?" - instead of answering with "You must have keyclone installed to be able to controll all of your characters when multiboxing.", the proper wording would be: "Keyclone allows easier control of all of your characters when multiboxing". In other words, a multiboxxer doesn't have to have Keyclone or any software or hardware to send keystrokes to other computers or instances of the game. In my years of Everquest and the first year of World of Warcraft, I didn't use any keyboard sending programs to the other copies of the game. Yet, I still multiboxxed. Keyclone makes the process of multiboxxing a LOT easier, but it is not a must have program to do it.
3. In section 1.2 for multiple copies of World of Warcraft folders, you may want to add these lines to start just before "First we need to choose where we want the different copies of World of Warcraft." that says "We need different copies of World of Warcraft installed on our machine to run multiple instances on the same computer so that the config.wtf in the wtf folder can be different. Also because we want to waste about 9gb of space on our machine per copy". Seriously, the only reason you have different copies of World of Warcraft is because of that config.wtf file. So wouldn't it be better instead of creating separate copies of the entire 9gb of space to create a little .cmd file that copies in the appropriate config.wtf file when WoW is started? All of the character differences in settings for macros, etc are stored under the characters name under the WTF directory and under the realm directory name. Those are different anyway. So the only reason you'd want to have a different config.wtf if is you have something like graphics settings different per login account. On Windows Vista, the config.wtf file isn't stored in your installation's directory, instead it's stored under C:\users\(windows login name)\AppData\Local\VirtualStore\Program Files\World of Warcraft\WTF. So by making a complete other copy of the game on Windows Vista, it's a complete waste of space because that config.wtf is stored in the same directory anyway!
4. In section 1.4, the guide explains what the WoWace updater is used for, but it doesn't explain why WoWace is needed to begin with. I don't use WoWace. The only two addons that I use aren't by them. They are CT_MapMod and ClassIcons. I've found that those are the only two addons that I need and they are very light on memory usage. I've tried WoWace before, but they use entirely WAY too much memory for what they do and in my opinion are not needed.
That's about it from my reading of the guide. The section on Keyclone is very helpful and now that I'm using Keyclone, I find that your guide explains a lot about how Keyclone works that I couldn't find any where else. Keep up the good work!

Temor, you actually answered a few questions I was going to ask that came directly from that guide. The Multiple Directories was one of them. One question I still have, and that's only because i haven't done the research yet. Is "Most common UI and Macros for Multi-boxing" And like I said, I just need to do the research on that one myself. For the most part, I don't _think_ I need a lot of Macros or UI mods to make multi-Boxing happening. But a very very small number of them would help make it easier. And that's part of what I want to find out myself what those are.

You cannot "clone" your guy. People used many separate accounts to create characters that look alike. Then, they gear them all up the same. Read some of the articles around here. Also, is your first language English? I don't mean to be harsh, I'm just curious.

I looked at the guide and noticed it said to check off "focus follows mouse" and that it would help with looting and trade and such... but its not working for me. should it work when trying to talk to NPC's or just looting and such.... scratch that just tried to do a trade and loot and didnt work. also I decided to test 5 warriors, and when I have them all attack 1 target (you know hit #1 for basic attack) they all stop following my main.

Hey guys, im deffinitely new to this, the idea came to me when i got nuked by 1 warlock and 4 mages hitting me all at once... lemme tell you, wasnt pleasant. So if you cant beat them, join them, right? Actually the whole thought of multiboxing has intrigued me. until recently i read on WoW forums that it is perfectly legal taht i have actually decided to give it a shot.
Now for the begginers guide from piejoh77 ('http://www.dual-boxing.com/forums/index.php?page=User&userID=2544') i must say, i read most of it and i truly believe that is one of the best guides ive read in awhile. especially for being so new to it. Keep up the good work :D
just a little information about what i plan on doing. I have 2 accounts and want to stick to just the two of them. Im playing with the idea of a Pally controlling a Warrior or perhaps a Shammy... i dont know if thats a smart combination but its basically the only characters i dont have on my horde server. i have a 70 pally on an ally server but never play him anymore (for the horde!!) i also plan on running this setup on one computer. i dont really have the money to buy more equipment (College FTL) and have already done quests/instance with both accounts running at once with no problem. sometimes the follower is a lil slow. but if you guys have any suggestions about this specific combination or any helpful newbie hints in general ill be happy to take them. Oh and im using Vista
So its a little late for me or i would start my multiboxing , but i guess ill leave it till tomorrow morning. Cheers guys/girls, ttyl

so my other question still wasnt answered then. the section where it shows you to check off the "focus follows mouse" I got the idea that it meant if I clicked on an NPC it would do the same with both characters.... so like I wouldnt have to switch between boxes to pick up quests and loot.... is this correct or no?

Hey there, i am new to dualboxing and i have a question.
I bought keyclone and have it set up so that the macro works but the problem is that i have to have both windows up and click the /followassist macro everytime my main character targets somthing to have my 2nd copy also auto shoot him.
I was just wondering if there is a way to have the 2nd window minimized and just hit the follow macro once and get the 2nd guy to attack when my first one does WITHOUT haveing to reapply my macro everytime?

Howdy Buddhahunta and welcome to the forums!
first, clicking doesn't get passed between clones. it works best if you put your /follow macro on the same key for all clones. that way, when you want to move.. you just hit that key and they all fall in line
as for targeting, well.. there are 2 levels. easy and advanced. easy would be using /assist <main> before every fight... the advanced would be to use /focus set to your main and configure all your powers to [target=focustarget]
i hope that makes sense. please feel free to drop me a note if you have any questions.

Ok i kinda get wut your saying, but im not sure how to do it.
So how would i be able to have only my "main" character's window up and press a key for my "clone" to follow?
Would that be under Keymaps? if so could you tell me how that works?

Howdy Bebheag and welcome to the forums!
using keyclone, run your wows.. and every key you hit in one wow .. will be sent to the other... so, target something and fire.. simple as that
if you truly need more, just let me know

OK I 2box(1pc 2 clients) this is what my setup is
main- unbind Fkeys- usefor alt
Alt- unbind 1-+ - use for main
basically what ever my main uses I unbind those keys for my alt, and vice versa.

and is another programm for this??
I've been multi-boxing for three weeks and these forums and the Wiki ('http://www.dual-boxing.com/wiki') have provided me with everything I've needed to know. The people on these forums fall over themselves in an effort to help you but no one is going to do it for you. Unless you can demonstrate that you've spent at least a little time trying to get things working and put some effort into your posts to reflect that (describe what you've done, describe what you saw, ask specific questions about what you need to put it right), then you're just going to get a big fat /facepalm.
Multi-boxing is not as easy as loading up WoW and reading the newby tips as they pop up. It requires effort, a little planning and some lateral thinking. It is not a scheme to get rich/70/laid quick.

You will definitely need 2 accounts to dual-box. You cannot log on to 2 characters on the same account at the same time.
1 account is needed per character.

great guide :)
sorry if spelling is bad,my first language isnt english
ive read alot about multiboxing the past couple of days trying to understand exactly what it is,and what i need(hardware/software) to multibox.
the more i read the more i see that it takes alot of work, but i also get more and more eager to try it out,it simply looks awesome to be able to have full control of multiple characters at once, from a challenge point of view.
anyway, just wanted to say thanx to all u guys on the forum for giving very helpful info and tips.
Big thanx to OP for posting this guide, its great,as ive said before :)
u will hear from me again when i take the step to get more accounts and im ready to start multiboxing for real, cause god knows im gonna need some help hehe :)

Thank you very much for this guide, and thank you to all the people who posted with suggestions after. I just started dualboxing yesterday, but I'm sure most of you who play WoW know this site is probably going to get MUCH MORE TRAFFIC very soon as all those people who want Zhevra mounts will be looking for dualboxing advice.

ok ive been waiting for funds to transfur ova to my paypal account so i can purchase the key for Keyclone. while ive been waiting ive been reading froums/wiki and still not sure of wat to do with macros (focus follow etc).
I'm not new to the game i have 4 lvl 70's and do alot of endgame and getting bored with it fast so i thoguht i'd try duel boxing. I have used only the basics for raiding i dont like all the fancy ui and movable frames so the most i use is titan omen dbm and auctioneer + the selected class mods for my 70's seperate roles in raids. still need a little help to under stand the key bindings and important macro's other than assist and follows
planning on duel boxing 2 warlocks (ally) same wow folder. could some1 give me a low down of good addon's and macros that would suit my selection
i wish to try and have my locks ready to play by the time ive payed for keyclone, so all i need to do is recheck and set up keyclone
i do not wish to fill this thread with replys so any "big"post like macros/mods pls pm

Hi, Moddy.
Well it was nearly over a year ago since i played WoW, i had to quit playing since we had bought a house, and we have a daughter that is 2 years old and that im taking over my dads company.... = alot of things to sort.
Anyway, in short i can describe it like this.
1. You have to buy one or two more wow accounts depending on how many chars you will play with. For example if you want to play with 3 characters you have to own 3 wow accounts.
2. When you have bought those extra accounts you MUST MAKE SURE TO ENTER THE SAME NAME, ADRESS AND EMAIL on WOWs Account information or else you wount be able to move the other characters to the other accounts. So this is a important part when you are activating the new accounts.
3. When the accounts are active you must move the characters to the new accounts by following the steps on WoWs homepage under character migration. (Check you account and you will see what i mean, remember that the characters must be on the same server) So for example, move the pally to one of the new accounts, move the Druid to the other new accout (depends on what you are planning to play as your "main" and then let you 3:rd char be on that account you allready own today (this should be your "main")
4. When this is done you must install needed software to get it to work. You dont have to buy extra computer hardware, unless you have an crappy computer setup. For example playing 3 accounts on the same computer at the same time will take up some computer power.
I would recommend you to check out dual-boxing.com ('http://dual-boxing.com/')for this and ask someone in the forums since im not an active player anymore (i just wrote the guide since i was new at dualboxing and wanted to share my information how to setup and start playing)
5. I would recommend you to download and read my How 2 Dualboxing Guide. Print it out and read it, follow my instructions and you should be able to get it to work without any problems.
You will find more information in this thread ondual-boxing.com ('http://dual-boxing.com/')
Beginners Guide 2 Dual-Boxing (3,4,5 boxing) ('http://www.dual-boxing.com/forums/index.php?page=Thread&threadID=3339')

Im sorry but i will not be able to help with all the questions you might have since i work alot and have an family to take care of, ill guess many things may have changed since the last release of WoW expansion so all the information in my guide may has changed etc.
Ill hope this will give you a hint of how to start dual-boxing and im sorry if i cant give you much more information. Just remember to read my guide, it will help you alot. And dont be affraid to ask in the forums. I know it can be time consuming to search and read the forums ... thats why i wrote the guide from the beginnning so people doesent have to spend all there time searching / asking in the forums.
Hope you will sort it mate.
Take care.
