What Svper tried has only slowed down the spammers. It might be time to stop all new posts. I don't like to limit access but I hate Spam more. Throwing out for discussions

We have a banned words filter here, don't we? I think I saw someone mentioning something about having to work to get around the filter to use the name of that software we don't deal with.

At any rate, if that's the case, perhaps we can just add crap like Ericsson, T-Mobile, iphone, blackberry, whatever out of place keywords they all tend to use to the blacklist. Won't do anything for the random paragraph spammers, but should help with the really obnoxious max character posts.

Not sure what they get, or what the answer is.

This is a set of forums.
Both to share information that works for us.
And for new users to ask for assistance when starting.
And to eventually be able to give back to the community.

I don't really want to limit that process.
But the inane spam is a tad annoying on the reporting end.
And I'd imagine its less than fun for moderators to deal with too.

Well, I was going to share my secret to making a living by manufacturing dirigibles with a hot air dryer, but if that is how y'all feel about it....

I don't know how many people you have joining per day or whatever, but on my old forums for my ex-band's website, I was getting spam so I made it a requirement to be approved before posting. Seems like a pain-in-the-bunghole, but would definitely get rid of level 1 spammers.

Stop All new Posts???

I read the forums several times a day and seriously don't even notice the spam. Whoever is taking care of it is doing a really good job.

I see 'em every couple days. I do, however, only use the "New Posts" link to read and I usually can tell pretty fast we've got new spam as you'll see several OLD ass stickies get bumped into the new posts half of the page. After a quick WTF, I go report one of 'em. No sense reporting multiple posts by the same spammer as I'm sure the mods see "ad spam KILL HIM" in the report and nuke the rest of that person's posts, too.

I visit at least 6 times a day and see no spam as well

Sometimes there are a few spam posts...sometimes there are none. Does it really bother people to see that once in a while? Do you think your safety is in jeopardy? The mods have already limited where the spammers can post [for the most part]. Everyday I do my part to report any and all spam I see; and when a mod wakes up and sees those reports the spam posts are deleted. Unless the mods/admin decide to single-handedly approve each individual that registers then I highly doubt the little spam we get here is going to go away.

I check the forums daily, and only noticed spam once in the last 3 months, last week (or the week before)
Reported it, haven't seen any since.

Mods here are indeed doing an awesome job.

Would a little capcha help everytime we post? (similar to wowhead comments for example)
This is assuming the spammers are bots.

I am on here almost all night, I see and report the spam constantly. It's certainly not "once in a while," I must report 3-5 different spammers {spammers, not posts} a day. IT's probably more, but who can tell with names like yshtgabsel?

I have the page open, sometimes refreshing (checking for new posts) only once in a day, and sometimes as many as five or six times.

There isn't a whole lot of spam, but it is consistently there in small doses. I agree, the moderators do a great job.

I'm usually around at the late or super early hours of the day as well, and you're right it is almost everyday for us. Most people say they don't even see the spam. I still don't see a reason for us to worry about this, it isn't like this forum is being overrun with spam. It's like that homeless person on the sidewalk, just step around him until someone comes to clean it up. I don't find myself accidentally clicking links that claim to teach me how to rip DVDs to my iPod. :)

:D:D:D

Most of the time (not always) I get to the spam before too many other people see it. Fenril and Khatovar are hands down *RELENTLESS* about reporting spam, and that *really* helps me and the other mods delete it faster. 80% of the spam that people actually see for more than 2 hours is during 11PM - 7AM CST. Unless stealthy is up, then he'll take care of it.

I don't want to completely limit new topic creation because then the spam would just be tacked onto existing threads. I also don't want to make people wait X days before being able to post because then the spammers would just come back after X days (they do that if I don't ban the accounts) I'm an impatient bastard and I wouldn't want to be new to multiboxing and trying to get help here only to find I have to wait to ask my question.

I think since I have joined I have seen maybe 3 spam threads. But 1 way of limiting it would be to have an introductions section (Or just make this in the current newbie area) have all new people only able to post in there but read everything
They can introduce themselves to prove they are not spammers with a "Hi Im from blah and play blah, thinking of doing blah"

Once that has hit the can get upgraded to a normal member and can post in all forums. Limits spam to 1 forum, lets everyone read everything for learning and keeps it all open and friendly.
