So the concept of gear score seems to have become in vogue while I was taking a break from the game after wrath came out.

Since I've been back I haven't worried about it too much as most my team wasn't lvl 80 and their gear sucked anyway :).

That said, I did some searching, it almost seems there is more than one metric for this? I check, hmm WoW heroes site and looked up my chars, My tank is currently around 1400.

Yet I hear folks talking about 5k plus scores, is this using the same system as I found there? I was thinking there must be more than one method to calculate as my priest with all epic i200-213 is in the 2000s, yet not sure how one would get to 5k upgrading to say 245s.

Any thoughts, links , info is appreciated.

Wow heroes will give you a lower score than the gearscore addon. When people say 5k+, they're talking about the addon score, not the wow heroes.

curse.com has the addon "gearscore"

full epic should give you a 4k+ gearscore. full 200 blue is about 3,5k i guess.

I think a fresh to 80 in quest blues and greens is around the 2700 mark.
With a fair chunk of frost emblem gear and ICC 10 gear you end up with around 5300-5500
People call for 5k for a ICC run, that is more then enough, for the first wing, and depending on skill (See above comic) for a fair chunk of the second.

But gearscore also doesnt take 1 other major thing into account, and thats lower gear being better then higher gear. Darkmoon Card : Greatness is awesome for a whole lot of classes and is only just getting replaced with some 245 and 251 gear. My Priest has a 213 wand that is better for me then a 232 wand I picked up to replace it.
It also doesnt take into account gems or enchants.

Gearscore is good for getting a quick idea of how smooth the run should be, but if you really want to know how the toon is geared and how they should perform you need to inspect them or WoW hero them. That will give you more of an idea of the skill level as typically skilled people will have the correct gems and enchants on all their gear.

One of the people in my guild is building up a screw gearscore set. They are a DK who takes any and all 251 items that dont get taken by anyone else (Mostly stuff with spellpower) They can in fact build an outfit with a higher GS then their actual gear.

Thanks!, that explains it , seemed to me there had to be 2 different scoring methods.

I'm not particularly concerned about it other than to know what folks are talking about.

Sure I might vote kick out my mage in my box crew if his score irritates the shaman, but well he is a gnome, so kind of deserves it.

My shaman can have quite the tude sometimes...

If they get too uppity though my Pali lets them get agro and then refuses to target them so the heals won't get to them...

That gets my priest bitching about why haven't I moved to ISBoxer yet..

hmmm

I wonder if I have been boxing to much of late it ...

fun facts with gearscore, my level 1 warlock (now level 10) had ~1200 GS.
(5 heirlooms)

This might be derailing a bit but I use the Elitist Group Addon to give me a better idea of the player I'm with when I run solo. It will give you a better picture of the toon's accomplishments, avg Ilvl score of his gear and what he should be capable of running without waving around an epeen.

This is where palyer's alt toons get screwed, when people look at achievements :) . In some respect I just feel the game is a little broke with Gear score and other such ways of trying to assess how people will do. I think it was much more fun when everyone just jumped into a dungeon and hoped they survived, nowadays everyone wants "the smooth run" nearly seems like people want to out gear everything. Outgearing makes sense in multiboxing, but in one player one toon scenario I think it just takes the fun out of it.
On my server there are a ton of toons starting to pop up with 6k gear score, I am thinking that will be the next trade request, "LFM for ICC10, need 6k + GS" . Kinda sad. :(

I'd think hiding item levels on gear, in Cataclysm would be a good move on Blizzards part.

If your toon is new, at the time the content is new, you are fine.

But if the content has been around for a while, and you're a new toon.
Or if your character is an alt, its the same boat as the new toon.

You won't have the achievement or the gear score.
Which will make it rather problematic to get either.

While that might be better/true in theory, i doubt this will solve the gs trend. People will just replace with an addon that assigns his own gs to gear. We know in what dungeon/raid a certain piece drops and if the content is new/old, shouldn't be too hard for a set of experienced players to make such a list that replaces gs. Lets just hope that the 'new one' will take gems/gear fits class into account.

Well there is the issue, GS only seems to use iLevel of an item, some iLevel 200 items for certain classes work better than an ilevel 245 item (due to procs etc) and so the ilevel in some cases makes GS misleading and as you said, currently I could have a 5k gs with no enchants which really makes the gear equivelent to a much lower iLevel once it is missing enchants and gems.

If Blizzard ever irons out the issues with cross-server raids, ie lock-outs and continuation of an incomplete raid, they could force a certain gear level before a raid becomes available, as they do for some of the harder heroics.

At the same time, you could random-raid queue and get in if your gear was enough to do it, rather then if you gear is enough to do a 25-man two raid tiers later in the progression. The majority of PuG raids on my server want ICC25 level gear scores, to take you to their TOC10 raid; I've seen 5k GS requirements to get into Naxx10's.
