View Full Version : Boosting without RAF viable?

Hey,
I'm gonna level up a team of 5 warlocks, and the RAF period on my accounts has expired. I got level 80 geared paladins on all accounts though, so I could split the team in two, boosting 3 warlocks first, then the last 2.
Has anyone done this, and how long does it take 1-60? Am I better off just questing with all 5 warlocks 1-60?

Ouch.
I would say boosting is faster. With that said its still hella boring, if you dont believe me just wait. Your eyes will bleed at the sight of SM afterwards. Also, it basically kills any fun in the lvling process ever again.

I would think, you'll want heroics and/or wintergrasp battles with the level 80 team first.
So you can buy the badge BoA chest pieces and the stonekeeper shard -or- badge BoA shoulders too.
Each boosts experience by 10%, which adds up to 19% (0.90 x 0.90 = 0.81) experience boost.
After that, yes boosting will be the fastest.
It was the fastest option during RAF, when every method received 3x experience, so the order of best to worst will not have changed, but there will be only 1/3rd as much difference between each leveling option, in terms of speed and efficiency.
I'd probably go Pally (Prot) + 4x Warlocks.. and boost a lot.
And then do the same for 1x Warlock + Booster.
If you have 3x Shaman, a strong trick for boosting is....
Group the toon to be leveling with one other toon (example 1x Warlock who is left over with a Mage or Priest).
Then group the 3x Shaman together.
Run about with everyone following the Mage/Priest toon, who is casting instant AoE's to aggro a lot of mobs.
Then (once everything is tagged), have the shammies drop:
a) 3x Magma Totems (and re-drop, if necessary until the mobs are dead).
b) 1x Stoneclaw Totems on round-robin (between 3x Stoneclaws one after the other, this will work through WotLK mobs).
Totems are considered pets.
If all the damage done is pet damage, and none of it by a player.
And if the lower toons are in a party.
Then they get full experience.
I did a Druid + Mage, from 60th to 70th on Rhinos in Borean Tundra.
It was 11 hours of play time, a very boring Saturday.

Listen to this man!
The shaman boosting trick is what I have used since woltk came out and it works great now even while waiting for BG/LFD to pop.
I have a post with AOE areas with woltk.look it up

Ok this sounds awesome and I need to know more :) I have been contemplating shamans (Once I get all my other stuff out of the way) Oh wait I think I just figured it out, you need 3 shaman who are already level 80 and they dont get XP :(
Just wondering if anyone has tried this with hunters and AoE heavy pets? Mainly as I have 3 hunters coming up(Rhinos and Gorillas if I remember right).
Im presuming this could also work for 1 hunter following 1 low toon but not in group, just have a macro to target the lowbies mob and /petattack.
Lowbie tag, pet kill. Not sure how fast it would be though. And maybe a healer to top the lowbie between battles.

At lower levels... up to 60th easily... a single Stoneclaw Totem will not die to 10-12 level 20 or level 40 mobs, before a single Magma Totem kills the mobs.
As you get higher up... or have larger pulls... you'll need multiple Stoneclaw Totems, on round-robin, before the Magma's can kill the mobs. Multiple shammies double or triple the damage per second from Magma Totems, and gives 2 or 3 Stoneclaws back-to-back.
Hunter or Warlock pets would work as well as the Shaman Totems.
You'd just need the mobs to be tagged by the lowbies.
And to ensure the Hunter/Warlock did not do any damage themself.
Just make sure the lowbie is grouped with someone other the the Hunter/Warlock/Shaman, same as with the totems.

I'm personally never used raf my first team was way before. I find a mix of quests and instances work the best for me. Don't be afraid of collection quests! And BoA gear = win.

With RAF
2 X to level 30
2 X to level 60
= 5 X level 60's
Without RAF
5 X to level 60
=5 X level 60's
Ouch ....... And that just the granting part, not even considering the 3X exp lolzors.
Also no matter what method you use its about 1000 mobs per level or so, even getting max exp per kill (iirc), cause of the exp cap killing a mob 20 levels higher is the same as 5 levels higher, I think.

I got 5 shamans, so I could do the totem tag boosting.
Ualaa, do you have a list of locations pre WotLK with mobs packed densely where this would work?

Seige enginerrs in the northmost part of the plaguelands as you go into the next zone (forget if its east or west its near the chappel where the dk qeust ends at)
Black temple top in training area
IF those mobs are to high I think next lower level mobs is pirates in tinnis cove or whatever its called, not srue on that though.

Instance boosting is still quicker than questing even without RAF but it is soooo boring. I'm boosting a team of paladins and it's taken about 17-18 hours to get them to lvl 37 (quested them to lvl 10), each SM Cath run at lvl 25 got them about half a level, now gets them about 24%. But you can do 5 clears of that in under half an hour = 24-25 mins per lvl.

What is totem tag boosting? Do you have totems out and then seperate your group members from the party, but does that help?

The mechanic works like this:
2 or more nooblets grouped up.
They tag a bunch of mobs.
Someone's pet (totems = pets) kill the mobs.
Nooblets get 100% XP.
