Thinking about 3 boxing a war/lock/priest but my biggest concern is there seems to be a lot of reliance on the main toon staying alive cause he has all the control

If the war dies how easy is it to seamlessly switch control to the lock before all 3 die?

You know I was wondering the same thing. This is something I have not yet come across.

I'm fairly new to doing anything more then dual boxing which you only have to switch characters when the main dies so there is probably a better way. I have all of the non-mains set to assist or target "party1" which is the group leader, if you see your main is going down promote one of the non-mains.

In my case I have my B character setup to jump right into this role, if B and the main both go down it gets rough real quick, at that point I'm scrambling to promote someone else and grab the backup mouse and more then likely just running as fighting is about impossible. Keep in mind this is the first time leveling 4 characters and I haven't spent time on pvp macros or much more then just blasting mobs one or two at a time. I'm assuming at 70 I will spend a ton of time getting my pvp and kiting type macros tweaked.

simple example

/assist party1
/cast Lighting Bolt

Personally all my spells / abilities use the focus technique, I have the f1 - f5 buttons assigned to set the focus to characters 1 - 5.

When my main dies i switch my focus to the next character, all of my other characters then assist / obey the new focus character. This allows for really easy "character swap over" when your main dies.

If you use something like keyclone you can stop passing your wasd keys so when u pass focus to another character you can highlight the window and start using that character as ur main without the need to change any controls.

The part i find hard is remembering class X is dead and to stop using his moves :(

Focus is again your friend here. Keep your main on Focus, that gives you a few advantages:

1. 2 "targets" to play with, target which is the mob, and focus which is your main. You can cast to either one, and it allows for hybrids (like Shaman) to dps while they aren't healing, but still quickly heal without naming names.

2. Have a macro on your 2nd character that commands everyone in group (via keyclone or whatever) to change focus to him. That way he's your new main, you can control him, move him out of harm's way, etc, and the rest will follow, heal him, etc.

I personally recommend the addon TwoBoxToolkit.

I make 5 buttons (F8-F12) on each toon, one for each of them. Sooooo...

If my Tank is F8, his button says:

/tb master 'this tank guy's name' (sets me as the new master)
/focus 'tank guy' (sets me as the focus)
/# followme (this is my chat relay channel. the other 4 should get sucked to the tank at this point. you don't have to use this follow, it could be seperate if you'd like, but i find if i've lost a toon in combat and need to switch leaders, it's nice to circle the wagons so to speak.)

Now the other 4 have this macro in their F8 slot:

/tb master 'tank dude' (sets the tank as their new master)
/focus 'tank guy'

There ya go. I also enable the Sticky Follow with twoboxtoolkit, and in Options Interface in WoW, turn on attack on assist. This way, you'll get some melee out of your 4x support as well (works nice if you use Pally/Shaman especially!) Enemy dies, and they all suck towards you, easy peasy =)
