I hope your parents like power bills.
Put $2000 toward one PC that can run 5 instances of the game.. then get an old machine that CAN play WoW for a friend to borrow..

5x[$500 per computer]
con: very expensive (hardware + energy)
pro: full hardware boxing possible
pro: one pc crashes, one char disconnects not your whole group
1x[~$650 main computer]
1x[~$750 alt computer]
pro: main computer doesn't lag because of the wow instances because they run on the alt computer.
pro: affordable
con: software boxing
con: alt pc crashes, 4 toons disconnected.
1x[~$1000 computer running all 5 WoW]
pro: cheap
con: max. 2 monitors -> not enough space on the monitor to show your main + alts.
con: pc crashes, your whole group disconnects
con: in capitals very laggy
con: software-boxing

well im considering the one computer... i got all i need on newegg ~$1300 [that cut my original price in half...] i dont care about crashes... if one char dies i let them all die... haha if i have to run back.. why not have the whole group? the more the merrier!
why would things be so laggy? what can i do to reduce this?

Wait....why is software boxing a con? I've used it with my 2 pc setup and I love it. 0 Clutter on the desk (other than 2 keyboards and mice ;P), 0 high cost (20 bucks, equivalent to one dinner at Tio Pepe's with the girlfriend), etc.
If you mean because at some point software boxing could become against EULA while hardware wouldn't, I disagree, I think they'll allow all or none.
So, I'd remove the cons of software boxing, it's great.

At 15, stay away from WoW. It's too addictive!
Go to college, get a good education, get a great job, make lots of $$, THEN start multiboxing.
Extra credit if you can find a gamer-grrrl along the way who also wants to multibox.

I don't speak dutch but the story is so old. Its one thing to be a slacker, not have a job and play video games all day, it is another to not eat or sleep. I lol at those people.

It's not too terrible on electricity. The four little Dells I use to run my minions have 250W power supplies, and they're missing a lot of things that a higher-end model (with the same power supply) would have. I'd estimate them at drawing about 150W tops.
Combined with my main PC, that's 1200W, which is not too much more than a four-core machine with a lot of RAM, a beefy graphics card, or SLI. I've noticed a difference on my power bill, but it's a lot less than running an air conditioner.

Basically it's saying that he was playing WOW online for min of 8 hours a day, sometime up to 24 hour stretches during the Xmas holidays, stated that the day before school he was up till 3am playing wow, he went to the hospital on tuesday and slept until Wednesday afternoon, then he was released ...
\impressed that i could still read that..

I don't think you'll be able to 5-box on a computer under $1k. How is the current computer you have right now? You may want to spend $1k on a new budgeted/performance computer and have that run 4 accounts with graphics turned way down and sound off. Then run your main character on the your current computer with sound and higher graphics settings.
That would also give you one extra computer for 1 lucky friend to come over.

My AMD X2 4000 with 2 GB ram and running a 7900 vid can run 4 instances of wow no problem. I do have a 20' wide monitor for it.
I still have a P4 around, so I can probably test how many wow I can run in there.
If you're thinking 5 wow accounts, you're looking atleast $75 / month subscription. If that can fly with your parents, then $2500 for computer should be no problem.
Try 2 account and see how your parents feel about $30/month.
At 15, I'd be asking for that money towards my car. :p

Well, I tried 3-boxing on 3 monitors. 1x 17" laptop, and 2x 20" wide lcd.
I was running Holy Pally on left, Prot Pally on the laptop, and Shadow Priest on the right. I found it not necessary to look at all 3 screens, just quick glances.
I found it also convenient to just have the 2 alts Holy Pally and Shadow Priest running on one computer at a top-bottom screen split.
I control my main Prot Pally on the lap top, and my left hand can easily access hot keys for both Holy Pally and Shadow Priest, using Autohotkey for now as I get comfortable with my macro sets.
I can envision running 5-box eventually, but I will use 3 screens only. 2 on the left for healer/support, and 2 on the right for focus dps.

hmm.. ok, maybe ill just use two screens... 1 for main the other w/ a 4x4 display for the alts... eventually move up to 3 screens i guess
so one main comp + alt comp?
any advice harware wise? what MB? how much RAM? what processor? i want to run FULL GFX on the main comp and low on the alts... pref 20+fps on the alts

What's your budget? That should be the first question.
$2500 will go a long way toward a very nice setup capable of running 5 accounts on one machine smoothly - better than what I'm doing, and it's easily playable.
Here's a rough list of what I'd consider a minimum machine built from quality components for running 5 accounts, but good enough for future-proofing..
2x 22" Dell widescreen LCDs @ 1680x1050 each. $239 x 2 = $478 (main on one, 4x on the other)
Intel Core 2 Quad Q6600 cpu $275
Gigabyte GA-X38-DS4 motherboard $200
4GB = 2x 1GBx2 Corsair XMS DDR2-800 Cas4 memory $109 x 2 = $218
2x eVGA 8800GTS 320MB videocards $220 x 2 = $440
A *good* power supply from the following brands of at least this wattage is one of the following:
SeaSonic M12 700W $200 (at an abosolute minimum - no overclocking)
Enermax Galaxy 850W $290 (or higher in Galaxy series)
OCZ 1000W $300
PC Power & Cooling 1000W+ $460+
As you can see.. prices add up.
The rest doesn't matter as much for performance.. although fast/striped hard drives will help with load times. You don't need an 8800GTX/Ultra for 1680x1050 even on highest settings. However, with an 8800GTS on each of your monitors, not in SLI mode, all 5 windows will play very smooth. You can save power (and power supply requirements) by going with one 8800GTX, but I'd much rather have dedicated cards per LCD, especially since the max resolution on one is only 1680x1050.
For comparison, here's my 5-account, 1-box setup:
Intel Core 2 Duo E6600 @ 3.2GHz
Gigabyte P965-DS3
4GB Corsair XMS DDR2
eVGA 8800GTX
Corsair (SeaSonic) 620W PSU
2x 36GB WD Raptors in RAID 0, 2x 500GB WD in RAID 0
Dell 24" 1920x1200 main (1x 1680x1050 window - I like to easily get to Firefox behind it)
Dell 20" 1680x1050 4x followers (4x 800x600 windows)
Creative Labs X-Fi Elite Pro
Logitech Z5500
Logitech G15
Logitech MX518
Antec P182 case
Windows XP Pro.
Considering I still have my setup in dual-view mode instead of desktop span, my framerates are still fine on my main window. I've used '/console maxfps 15' on the other 4 windows to keep them from hogging resources. I built my computer nearly a year ago (with the hard drives being salvaged from an older machine), and if I had to do it today, I would definitely go quad core and two non-sli videocards with two same-size widescreen monitors.

I'm 15... Have a 1.5k computer atm... Bar Mitzvah money ftw?
anyways, i tried 4-boxing (couldn't get another trial account, wow site was messed up) on full graphics on main window, graphics all the way down except for terrain distance on the other 3. 2 monitors. given it was in the starting zone, but I was still max FPS on all 4... I'll see how it goes, I don't mind dropping gfx for pfrmnce if need be... Anyways, I don't like the idea of having to work with 5 computers...
oh well,
my 2c.
