View Full Version : Virtual machines for multiboxing?

Has anyone tried to use VMs for your additional clients?

I've seen several people who are running multiple instances on the same machine, but no mention of using virtual machines to run the extra game clients. I've been toying with this idea, especially when I've considered trying to 4 or 5 box, simply because I don't have enough PCs and one of my secondary systems is starting to die.

I would use MultiBox for my keyboard broadcasting. I would probably use a second system as my "main"/server and the VMs on my best system as my followers/client.

Any thoughts?

VM's will add unneccesary overhead. Just run multiple WoW clients on your current PC.

I use VM's for development and misc support, running 3+ on a machine slows it down abit.

See this thread for talk about running multiple WoW clients.

My impression was that vms don't do DX9+ very well (yet).

Hah yeah.. VMs :)

I think Xzin meant VM's, not KVM's.

You are right though, they don't do DirectX very well if at all.

It's been a while since I've used VMWare or Virtual PC (6 months to a year) but last time I used them the video cards in the VM were pretty generic. You can run 2D stuff but 3D was out of the question. Unless they've updated this feature then you would not be able to run any 3D games.
