View Full Version : Only Two Hands - How do you do it?

Okay, a question that's been nagging me for sometime: Could I be more efficient in my set up to maximize the limitation of only having two hands? ;)
Seriously, here's my basic set up:
Left Hand
- Movement (WASD, QE for strafe, these six only control my main)
- Tank threat spam and DPS spam ("2" key)
- Tank threat only spam ("3" key, slaves do nothing)
- Consecration ("4", I find I need that spell on a stand alone key and use it quite often, slaves do nothing)
- PBAE ("6" key, my three DPS do whatever PBAE they have)
- Divine Protection (the pally damage reduction thingie, "8")
- All-in-One ("-")
- Jamba follow master ("=")
- Miscellaneous (burst DPS is "alt-7": bloodlust, mirror image, dps trinkets, etc., Targeted AE ("alt-9") sets up a click to have DPS cast ae targeted spells with ISBoxer, etc.)
Right Hand
- Select targets
- Click healing with Healbot via window repeater region from my pally (main) to the priest
This set up works just fine. I can handle most PvE content that I'm geared for other than stuff I'm simply too lazy to master (HoS Brahn event, Occulus, Old Kingdom). However, what I'm noticing is when I'm movement challenged my left hand is busy working the WASD keys and my DPS stops (i.e., I can't keep spamming "2" while moving very well. ;) ). I simply will never get used to the idea of mouse driving and even if I could that would compromise my click healing.
What do you do?
P.S. On a side note, I'm wistful about the days of hardware 3 boxing in EQ1 where I had a set up that read the log file and would simply spam DPS until the mob died leaving me free to do other things. Yes yes, automation but those were the old days. :)

Voice commander is a pretty good option for spot healing if you run with a dedicated healer. There is a classic video of a mage and a priest in SM as a demo of it. I also use it for rallying my camp (the non tanks) and some lazy strafing.

Q and E are valuable hotkeys. I use movement keys and right mouse to strafe. I keep often used spells between ` and 5 on my bars. I also have a G11 with the buttons on the side, and my pinky uses about 4 of the closest ones. You just gotta be creative in this hobby :p

Mouse with a couple of buttons is good to have. besides that you can use the scroll wheel for 3 binds aswell, scroll up, scroll down and click the wheel. Gives 5 additional buttons, on which you could bind the spam button for example.

I have an HP voodoo mouse with five buttons. Have some healbot stuff tied to buttons 4/5. Hadn't thought about scroll up/down, but I'm SO USED to that being my camera zoom I don't know if I could train off of it. Good idea though as ripping the scroll wheel would be pretty easy.
I'm still curious to hear how others are handling encounters where there's a need for coordinated movement and healing. Specifically when having to deal with team movement and heavy incoming damage, how do you keep your DPS spam going?

Well if the tank is tanking the right mob, and its only my toons which needs to move - fx. when a mob throws a AoE on them, I move my toons with the arrow keys while spamming the dps key. I have a main dps key key "2" and a aoe threath spam key "1" where my dps toons do nothing. My healer heals the tank on "1", which is nice as I use Vuhdo and Isboxer repeater regions for healing normally, which would be impossible when my right hand is moving the toons around.

I use the whole keyboard this is because i cannot use asd method like most normal people would, im arrow and numpad man
i dont have any tank macros, 0
all i got is dps macros and healing. tank normally with main window but remove any keybinds from tank so spamming a macro will have no affect but will on the clones as they are set to receive.
this means i can tank normally/ switch tanks with only jamba to change master. so your left with click macros that consist of few spammable buttons.
this would make things less complicated and free up space for hitting other macros.
i have a total of 43+ macros that i use but in normal fights i only use 1-2 that consists of dps and resto tied into each other.
everyones setup is different!
but try the no tank macro setup, multitasking!!! who said men cant!
EDIT:
putting this into what hand does what for me:
tanking = mouse normal no macros
dps = right hand using numpad
healing right hand using numpad + end
movement/tactical advantages = left hand using various keys covering the qwerty area
Follow/boss movement - Mouse buttons and macros. using razor mamba

Really? These fights (aside from HoR) are pretty easy. I'm using VuhDo / Repeater regions. I just strafe with my left hand and click heals with my right, then move back to the n52 to keep DPSing.

You might want to try a Logitech G13 gamepad. I mapped strafe and forward/backward to the joystick leaving all the buttons for dps keys.

I've got "strafe alts" keys setup for these fights - I just reach over and slide everyone left/right as needed and continue DPS/Heals. most of the fights where you need to strafe you don't need to spread out as much so I tend to leave them all right on top of each other, otherwise i just move them in formation.

Actually with the G13 I used the joystick for moving my tank and with an alt modifier I can use my other toons. Another option using the G13 due to being able to move the tank with the joystick is that you can have dedicated strafe keys on the second row which also allows very fast access to move toons.

Zan covered it. Traditional instances don't require you move all five toons much. The new ones to. Its not so much as I can't do things, I was just curious if folks were using their controls in a more efficient manner.
I have strafe-alts set to my left/right arrow keys. I use IWT a lot.
Looks like there isn't a big efficiency secret I've been missing. Still, fun thread to read.

I use a G15 and map a bunch of keys to the macros on the left. I find that the right->left motion with my left hand is easier than left->right. Also, the keys are organized in such a way that your hand can tell if you are on the wrong key. I also have an X-keys, but I don't really use it for much. It's just a ton of miscellaneous stuff that I do outside of battle, like party buffs, eating, group invite/accept, etc.

My god Fur, is it possible for anyone to be a bigger condescending ass than you? Did you really get that picked on while on the playground as a kid? Is it possible for anyone to have had that much sand kicked in one's face to explain your level of dickheadedness?
This is the same guy who got his panties in a bunch during an online conversation via a message board and in a resulting fit of childish spite deleted a ton of the communities content? Seriously?
Grow up. Being the neighborhood bully, even in an online community such as this, should get boring even for the most small minded folks like yourself.

You really want help? Ok, I will think for you because you're obviously too block headed to think outside the box.
You state your problem is movement - and you can't "dps and move" - well, most classes can't dps and move at the same time anyway, so thats not really the issue, is it?
You need to be able to independently move your characters WITHOUT re-positioning your tank. Thats the core of the problem. And you can't use the mouse - because you heal with it. Ok, so work around that.
Left Hand
- Movement (WASD, QE for strafe, these six only control my main)You state you don't like MOVING your main with the mouse, correct? Thats easy. I hate doing that to.
Lets just look at A & D. Those are basic "turn left, turn right" keys, and very slow at that. You probably find yourself using mouselook most of the time anyway.
Rebind these to strafe "alts" left and right. Thats it. Thats the big secret.
Now your left hand can stay basically in the same position its used to. Just use QE to strafe your tank, and AD to strafe your alts. WS stay the same as move tank forward and back.
I use the arrow keys for moving the alts forward and back, and turning them left and right. I rarely have to manually turn them - so the keys our out of the normal keyboard use area. And if you really need to manually turn them - move your right hand quickly over to the arrow keys and do what you need to do, them jump back to your mouse. You can continue DPSing.
Then only other thing I see missing is a "main tank / target of target" heal button(s) on your LEFT hand. Click healing for the alts is great, but most of the time you'll be healing your tank - and that should be "automatic" for you - reflex even. I use T & 5 myself.
Anyway, please continue to demand to be spoon fed. Sometimes you'll get lucky. Sometimes you'll go hungry. I prefer to fetch my own food.

Fur, you missed the whole point. I don't want anything. I'm not begging for help. Read my initial post. It wasn't some lame appeal for help. I simply was interested in reading what the rest of the community did to deal with moving, dps'ing, and healing all at once. So, I laid out my basic setup for how I handle my toons using the hardware at my disposal.
What did you contribute?
Well, your first post was an attempt at humor. Funny enough and not offensive, but largely not on point. Most of us probably don't use footpedals.
Your second post was a playful bash at mouse region repeating.
Your third post was the condescending bullshit that you normally try to stir up. Even with long time members of the community such as myself.
In your fourth post you finally contributed to the thread's initial purpose. Thanks.
Again I'll say it, grow up. Be nicer. Save the bitterness for those who truly warrant it.

You say you have only two hands.
1) - more mouse buttons. thats not bullshit - its the damn truth. you are playing a game that was built for "3" mouse buttons x5. Why not get 5x the mouse buttons? (Naga has 17 in case your curious)
2) - foot pedals. yes, i'm serious. And if you watch ebay you can get some for $15.
3) - Old timers here have seen this concept work. I don't like it personally, but its practical and it may work for you. You just have to try.
4) - Yes, this was humor -
Put your mind to work. (YMMV)Specifically - THINK. "your millage may very" - IE - if you're not too far gone to think on your own.
And you're comment about "most of us don't use foot pedals" - WHY? Don't have feet? Or are just too stubborn to try something new?

Im still new to what I would call proper boxing :) My team is at levels 61-63 only being brought together at level 60-61 and has only done 2 instances so I imagine changes will be made over the coming weeks. But here is my current setup along with some changes I plan to make before I continue
I lead with my DK tank and have my Shamn heals and 3x Hunter DPS following
1 - My have all my followers target my tanks target
2 - My DPS /click button, each hit sets target to current tanks target
3 - My tanking macro
4 - My DPS /click button, with DPS hitting their existing target (Allows me to tank 1 target and DPS another)
5-8 - Tanking buttons, Death Grip, Strangulate etc
Grave key - Interact with target DPS
\ is Interact with target healer
Healing is done on the numpad, this is almost certainly going to change but currently
1-3 Tank heals -healing wave, riptide, chainheal
4-6 DPS Heals, each is a cast sequence of riptide + chain heal
7-9 DPS heals for Healing wave
0 . and + are my healers self heals
I make sure that my DPS are always on my party bars in the same order so I always know which button to hit to heal them.
F7 is totems
So thats how I do all my tanking, DPS and healing, but movement is the main question, well mine could prob improve but ATM
WASD - Tank movement as standard controls, as I use mouse for clicking I can easily right click to strafe and such, also one of my mouse thumb buttons is autorun.
Arrows - Move all the followers, Forward, back, Strafe Left and Right. I realise this makes it hard to move and heal at the same time.
Q - Turns off strobe follow from my tank and on all other toons backs them up, this allows me to hit Q and have all my guys instantly stop following.
I think thats about it, will be interesting to see how it holds up in the future though.

I'm seriously considering foot pedals. One for Vent. One for a modifier key. Not actually have to press the fucking modifier key would really free up my fingers alot.
I also want a big pedal I cant just stamp on that blows all my cooldowns and launches my biggest nukes at an opponent in PvP. I could have a backup voice commander pro where I could scream "DIE MOTHERFUCKERRRRRrrrrr" or some such and it would be beautiful.
Also why are you not using repeater regions Fur? You clearly use Innerspace by your forum image under your avatar? I currently use ShadowUnitFrames, Grid AND Vuhdo. Vuhdo is just for my healer(s).

I wish I could do a =countIf(all posts, "Use search"). How many times have people posted "Use search" Seriously thats basically what Fur was saying. If you aren't going to come up with your own methods then search other peoples. I can't count how many guides and idea threads have been posted on alternate methods on these forums.
Now, I'm not going to discount that some of this was uncalled for, but Fur's not the only person here that doesn't sugar coat his posts. In all honesty this question can expect similar answers to a high schooler asking his classmates how to walk without tripping, or walk and talk at the same time. Your bound to get some ROFL's and some honest help.
Sometimes asking a simple question like this is a good way to get people to share their new ideas and what not though. I use an n52 and a 10 button mouse. I have setups for movement key passing and mouse driving and others. Can't really find one I like personally, but I'm positive any of the new content can be easily beaten with just strafe keys and auto follow as most of the old raid content was beaten this way and it's quite a bit more involved than the new heroics.
If you're having movement problems on fights like garfrost (giant in pit of saron) for instance you just simply fail at the fight. You should never need more than auto follow on this boss... It's not a movement fight. Maybe analyze your strategies as well as your movement concerns. I simply run the tank 20 yards from the dps and auto follow for a few seconds when he throws a boulder. Auto follow again after the stuns and go clear your debuffs behind a rock... Same with Ick, Devourer, Broham(sp?). All these are explained in their own threads. If you need a new way to move try binding a keymap toggle to pass your movement keys or something.
Sorry, I know this post was less than constructive and someone is bound to pick it apart. But while you do so remember that it's the internet and I'm busy clearing heroics while your doing it. :)

5. Purge
shift-5. Buff (FT Weapon / Fel Armor)
Q. Feral Fire for pulling
shift-Q. Spread out toons
E. 3x quick heal on tank
shift-E. 3x chain heal on tank
R. 3x chain heal on group
shift-R. Bloodlust

Large hands are very helpful. Being able to hold left ctrl and still reach 0 - = with the same hand worked for me for a long time. A gamepad with a thumb stick once your used to it is infinitely better though. being able to move 8 axis and have jump + a modifier all on my thumb frees up so many buttons its amazing.

My setup is rather simple. I don't use any addons at all, except of recount every now and then to test DPS.
Am using the mouse to move my toons. Am driving my pally, as well as mouse clicking almost all of his abilities (probably one of the reasons I usually dont run OOM with the pally, spamming tanking rotations isn't required for heroics).
Buttons 2 and 4 are my DPS spam buttons (2 different ones to deal with eclipse procs).
Button 3 is a self heal for all my casters (not using this one anymore, it used to be useful early on).
Button 5 some instant DPS spells.
Button 6 is used on my shamans to throw a heal on my tank, not used very often.
7 to 0 are slightly used, mostly a dispel/purge key, thats it.
W is my mouseover cleanse, E = judgement.
R and T are used to strafe my followers left/right.
D is assist focus (my tank), F = follow focus.
Buttons Z, X, C, V and G are used for different heals (pressing them with my left hand thumb). None of them targeted on any specific toon except of renew/greater heal on the tank. Am healing any and all AoE damage with holy nova (loving my priest). I've setup a mouseover flash heal macro for the healer, not using it very often though, holy nova is too good.
^ is my oh shit my healer pulled aggro button. Hand of Protection on my healer as well as some self heal for the priest. Used that one once so far iirc.
Well, and ALT-T for magma totems and ALT-D to pop bloodlust.
That's it, pretty straightforward.

Interesting key layout Svper. That's a lot packed into a pretty tight package. Interesting to see. How do you keep up DPS while moving? I'd presume you don't use the WASD movement control or you don't use your mouse when moving as I don't know how you could be mashing "8" and moving with WASD with only the left hand.
As for your defense of Fur, its pointless and you know it. Everything you need to know about that Fur's approach to dealing with long time members of this community is in this thread. Simply read my initial post and find where I was begging for help. No luck, right? Even the most reading comprehension challenged could see I was simply attempting to start a new topic that might be interesting to see how folks are running their toons. No pathetic cry for help. No newb poster asking for ez mode.

If I need to move the tank, I just use the mouse or arrow keys. If I need to move the group, I use wasdqe. If the group is moving, I'm not DPSing, so no need to keep spamming 9 or 8 or 7. But if the tank is moving, I can keep spamming the DPS keys on the N52 with my left hand, and move the tank with the mouse / arrow keys with my right hand.

nevermind.
the amount of thread reports Svper would have to deal with isn't worth my original post.

Got it Svper.
Yeah, I guess I need to figure out how to move righthanded. Some of the pulls in FoS end up with me dps'ing a few down while one or two casters stay beyond my tank's reach. So, since the trash is pretty trivial I tend to stop dps'ing ("2" key for me) and WASD my tank over to them. Recently I've tried a little bit of mouse moving if the mobs are right in front of me so I can keep my DPS spam up.
Should follow Fur/your/other's advice to look at other hardware.... but.. I laptop box mostly and usually in a mobile location or regular living area (i.e., couch potato so I can multi-task and multi-box: television). :)
EDIT: Changed HoS to FoS

just had a thought - does anyone know of a keyboard with 2 really big buttons i can place in front of my 9 month old; the idea being i'll link healing to those 2 buttons which frees the adult keyboard to do DPS and Tank. And preferably plays nursery rhymes too

One of those foot keyboards might work for that.

I have something like this, I used some spare buttons from some mame cabs I built.
If you an find a playskool trackball, they are nice, basically a ball the size of a mini basketball that doesnt pinch fingers and has two slappable large buttons on both sides. I think its only PS2 however.

Forge of Souls, Harbringer of Souls.
Pit of Saron, Ick and Krick
Pit of Saron, Big Ass Giant
Pit of Saron, Final Boss
Halls of Reflection, all three bosses.
Those are where I find myself wishing I could move and heal easier...
I heal with Grid and mouseover macros. Its simple and work quite well, I have boss/enemy targeted at all time and just move pointer over any target in Grid to heal or dispel them.

F1-F12 (F1-F5 used to be my healing buttons pre-repeater regions)
F6 = dps cooldowns,F7 defensive cooldowns, F8 all assist current window, F9-F12 = long cooldowns like Elementals.
1-= mostly littered with my /click macros with creative planning for situational nuking...
Whole Numpad - Totems/Trinkets/Blessings watershield/weapon buffs/seals etc...
Click heal with repeater regions... Left Mouse, Right Mouse, Middle Mouse, Mouse 4, Ctrl + Mouse4, Shift+left click.
MKeys on the G11 (Keybroadcasting/MouseBroadcasting toggles)
G1-G5 window swapping
G6 Toggle Click to move on and off
G13-18 = Formations + KeyMap Toggles
Arrow Keys: UP all move up, Down all move down, Left all but tank strafe left, Right all but tank strafe right
F = All Follow
Ctrl + T = Interact With Target (all)
T = Interact With Target Melee only (when applicable)

mouse wheel up: dps/heals/tank
mouse wheel down: same thing
mouse button 1: os button
mouse button 2: hero/mirror image
mouse button 3: drop totems
I then just target things and scroll my mouse. I basically play the entire game just with my mouse
Sure there are all kinds of situational buttons on my keyboard, but really what else do you need to do normally besides just your tank rotation, dps rotation, and heal?
Do you guys really micro manage your healing and stuff? Why? Just link heals/dps/tanking all to the same button and smash on it like a monkey. You guys make stuff too hard, seriously.

Where's the fun in that? My healer only heals when she needs to, which at this point is rarely. Right now, she can spend the majority of her time purging and DPSing instead of wasting mana on heals that aren't needed.

I don't heal heroics either anymore except to hot up the tank before bosses. I'm not really talking about that, more I'm specifically talking about the multiple people here that have a billion buttons for every single heal on their bar for every single person in their group. If you're not involved in the very high end of pvp where you really need to play optimally or at least close, do you really need all this complication for boxing?

Efficency is key :P I used to multi-box 5s at decent ratings (1900-2100), and I like to be able to jump between bgs / world pvp / heroics/ 10mans / swap in real people in any slot and not have to reconfigure anything and still be optimal thus the ammount of buttons.

And these same people who don't have the gear yet to make heroics or even non-heroics trivial probably also don't have the gear to blow mana on casting a heal every button push. You're running a druid healer, you're supposed to roll hots and WG.
A lot of other people are running Shaman or Priest, even Holydins. Hell, some people don't even have dedicated healers, they rely on DPS heals like Rets with AoW procs or all Ele shammies with LHW and CH. Group healing requires varied targeting for certain classes and Tank +4DPS setups require more flexibility so as to not step all over DPS output when heals may be needed. 1 button healing is not the most effective way to deal with boxing for many people. Multiple healing configurations make things a lot easier for some people, not more complicated.

I had my healing bound to my dps button and my healer ran out of mana fairly quickly.... I found I just needed one button for healing the tank and the rest is done using the repeater regions /vuhdo setup...
Like Fur said, its the hax.

My original point was related to what I've noticed in the ICC 5 mans which is a fair bit of tank movement and team movement is involved. This is different in my experience from most of the original WotLK 5 man content.
So, i found myself needing to add more movement to my usual processes. This resulted in my sacrificing some DPS when forced to move as I move left handed and heal right handed (mouse region repeating). Its not a huge deal as I haven't been limited in what I can do other than my overall skill (groan) and gear.
Hence, I started this post to see if there were more efficient setups that might make it easier to do three things at once: movement, DPS, and healing.
Rolling HoTs with a druid is of interest. I have an 80 druid (balance geared) who I've been messing around wtih in tree form.
Fun topic ..... for the most part. ;)

I use a druid for heals and their AoE heal does a decent amount of healing, they are great for movement fights where they can heal just as effectively running around as when standing still, HoTs FTW.
I agree with you that the movement fights do make things more interesting in the latest dungeons. I simply have a left and right stafe key assigned to move my toons around as a group.
ISBoxer with Click regions really helps with healing using Vuhdo or Healbot.

I'm pretty primitive, after all.
I don't use WASD to move much. I use "R" for autorun and I steer with the mouse. Or I click-to-move, because of all the threads about how awesome that is (click to move plus key bound to interact with target)
Button 1: I don't think this does anything, anymore. Might be my earth shield button on the resto, I forget.
Button 2: Hammer of Justice, or Wind Shear. OR something else on my hunter, but nobody cares about hunters.
Button 3: THIS IS WHERE THE ACTION IS! It's my 96969 pally macro (minus consecration), and the FS-LS-LB etc macro on shamans. It also activates all trinkets. Maybe elemental mastery too, I forget.
Button 4: Taunt and Lesser Healing Wave.
Button 5: Consecration and chain lightning and multi-shot. They spam well together.
Button 6: Avenger's shield and thunderstorm and frost trap/freezing arrow. Usually works fine because avenger's shield is on cooldown from the beginning, so if I'm spamming thunderstrorm in an emergency in the middle of a fight I won't waste a cooldown on avenger's shield.
Button 7: Self-buffs that you do before a fight, like Sacred Shield. Might be my Earth Shield button too, I forget.
Button 8: Empty for some reason.
Button 9: More self-buffs that are suited to pre-combat use; water shield and Seal of Right
Button 0: Follow focus.
Button -: Divine plea (i should probably put this somewhere else) and grounding totem.
Button =: Holy Wrath and Earthbind Totem. <--- the second one is just how it's always been since 2004.
I only really like to use 1-5 in combat. So I hit shift and go to my other bars, sometimes.
Shift+2, button 1: The "accept" macro you see around here. Invites everyone, accepts everyone, accepts quests and trades and all that at once.
Shift+2, button 5: Fire nova
Shift+2, button 7: Fire elementals
Shift+2, button 9: Earth elementals.
Shift+2, button 0: Drink water.
Shift+4, button 5: Flametongue weapon, and Righteous Fury.
Shift+3, button 6: summon non-combat pets (on the first press), target them and attach leashes (on the second press).
etc etc up to mount buttons. I don't use /click because it'd require starting over, and as you can see I'm set in my seemingly random ways.
I'm not posting this as an answer, but as a post that raises more questions as you figure out making your way through your own KEYBINDER'S ODYSSEY

And then? Since I only really use R to move around (unless I need to move everyone, then I use WASD) I sometimes take my hand off the mouse and hit the NUMPAD keys.
Numpad1 : Everyone heal my tank. alt+numpad1: Everyone chain heal my tank.
This goes for numpad 1-5. I can just add someone else's name into the target line of the macro if I swap out an alt.
Numpad6: EVeryone chain heal yourself.
Others I forgot about:
F key: Assist focus. (useful in ToC mounted combat etc)
G and H keys: These are my 2-part spread out macro.
[ and ] keys: One equips the argent lance, the other equips your main weapon.
~ key: interact with target.
Only tank interact with target.

. ;)
I noticed two major changes in the new 5 mans:
1) An attempt to end AoE faceroll tanking. There just isn't places to LoS pull all the mobs together in the new dungeons
2) Massive amounts of party AoE damage. Healers have to take it up a notch or three. (where in current gear the old heroics barely require healing at all)
