View Full Version : Argh.. get me out of this time sink (Setting up UI & Addons)

I just spent like 4 hours setting up my UI's. Normally I wouldn't mind but this is team #2 and my RAF timer is ticking louder each day. I would like to set up 1 UI & Addons just the way I like it, and I want any new character I make to use this by default. Now I 5-box, and strangely enough when I make new toons none of them are the same. So how do I need to save it so when I create a new character it loads everything up. I know some addons just use the default profile, so on those I can just save the setting I want on all my toons to default.

I use 1 WoW folder, with multiple account folders. I have each account on a seperate bnet acct. Now I notice the parent folder to the character folder also has savedvariables for some but not all addons. Are these what it uses for default when creating a new toon? If so could I just copy the savedvariable I have setup the way I like from the character folder to its parent folder, or does the addon have to specifically be written that way to use it as default.

I have no bars from wow showing, I use all macaroon bars. I have been having trouble with macaroon bindings so I put the standard bindings that are the same on each character in the bindpad addon. For class specific bindings and general movement and following I use Jamba's macro system, love those variables.

All in all these are what I have to edit on each account to get them setup and matching the way I like them.

Keybindings
sUF
Chinchilla layout, settings and button positions
Macaroon bars and layout, binds, macros
Titanpanel bar and layout
Jamba (I realize all but the command macros and variables setup cant be avoided)
Healbot
Combuctor

Those are the addons that I end up spending time tweaking to get all 5 near exact matches of each other, since each is on a different account in a different folder it's not as simple as pulling down a profile drop down and selecting the same profile. But with file manipulation outside of WoW I'm hoping this is, for the sake of me and Team #3 and on. Any guides or advice would be appreciated.

in your WTF file, under the account name then server name there should be a folder for each toon. You could try copying the files from your main that you set the ui up under to thoes folders.

Yes thanks, I did this originally with mixed results. It works for some addons, but for others not so well, it seems some addons save settings for all characters in 1 .lua file. So in order for this to work you would have to open the .lua and do a find and replace from the original toons name to the new toons name. And even then it lead to problems and errors in the addon. I was hoping to find someone that knew exactly how WoW processed a new toons settings, and when are the saved variables in the Parent folder to the Character folder used.

C:\World of Warcraft\
. . .└──WTF\
. . . . . . ..└──Account\
. . . . . . . . . . .. ├──Account #1\
. . . . . . . . . . .. ├──Account #2\
. . . . . . . . . . . .├──Account #3\
. . . . . . . . . . .. ├──Account #4\
. . . . . . . . . . .. └── Account #5\
. . . . . . . . . . . . . . . .. ├──Server Folder\
. . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . .│ . . .└──Characters\
. . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . .│. . . . . . . .└──Saved Variables\ ←(Variables Inside Character Folder)
. . . . . . . . . . . .. . . . ..└──Saved Variables\ ←(Variables Inside Account Folder)

So when are the account variables used as opposed to the character variables? Are these used when you create a new character? Is it per addon where some use it and some don't? What if I lay it out how I want it in the character variables then paste that .lua into the server variables? Is it even compatible?

Any of the variables saved within the account folder -- things like your unit frames addon etc, should be the same across all toons on the account. And since these are not character specific, copy/paste from one account to the next should work just fine.

Other addons are saved within a specific characters variables folder. Many of these can be copy/pasted to other characters folders. Some don't like this, and short of trial and error, there's not an easy way to discover which are friendly to this and which are not. Even if something is "borked", you can always delete the saved variable file, and configure it manually.

I'd try to copy everything, and see what portion you can copy to set up the same. After that, you have to manually configure the rest.

Also, if you have to configure anything manually for several accounts at once. Enable your mouse broadcasting for the software, and you can at least configure everyone on your team at once, for these final stubborn steps.

Solution:

Stop using the fancy crap and just use the default WoW UI.

If I can raid ICC with it - its good enough. (and omgwtfbbq roflstomp heroics/raids with my 5 box team)

Or just do what I do and setup my main character and leave the others looking like crap. Yes yes I know I know I'm behind the times etc :P

This isn't a bad suggestion at all. You don't need everything on every toon. I use VuhDo for healing but I only have it on my tank and my healer. Just use the stock unit frames. Pimp your main out as you see fit but don't worry with the other junk unless you are focusing on pvping or running without a tank (and therefore no designated toon to drive with).

I have actually done this for a while, now where I don't quite play it to the extent of FTL, I do switch leader quite often, also I like to be able to recover quickly if the master dies.

Back on topic, I had heard something about a addon that basically rounds up the settings of your addons then using the addon on the new account lets you move them to the target account. But if I recall there was lots of complaints where people had their original UI totally lost, wether due to user error or the addon itself I can't say. And along those lines would it kill blizzard to give us a way to click and share a macro with a friend or group?

I've seen addons either here or elsewhere that dealt with macro sharing.

Super Duper Macro allows you to send macros to friends. I rarely use that function since all my guys are different classes and specs, but it does work.

Try nUI, not the best but it give U the same UI across all your toons. All your actionbar, minimap, hud, r all the same. I only load nUI and Jamba on all my slaves and the only thing I need to do is in Jamba to display the team list only on Master. I was done in under a min.
The only other addon I use is questhelper, bagnon, auctioneer and gatherer on my Main.

PS: the only problem with nUI is when U have a Druid as a Main. The actionbar is a bit mess up so U will have some minor problem with 1 of the actionbar.

Set your main toon UI how you want and leave the slaves with jamba only.

You don't need fancy ui on the slaves, so why waste your time ?

I am very impressed by the people that don't need any UI addons. I personally lay out macaroon bars mostly so it looks like a keyboard, plus another couple rows for click macro stuff. Then it is very easy to set up and see which keys do what. Once it is all set, you just copy the configs with that .bat and then basically all you do is change the spells and a few commas in the click macro bar.

I should mention that I haven't actually used that batch thing in a long time...

if you're at all into LUA editing - checkout TukUI.org

everything is configured in the interface/addons/tukui/ folder - so if you share that interface folder across all accounts they'll all get the same layout / changes / tweaks you make via the config file.

that + superdupermacro or Jamba-Macro should get ya setup in no time.

My slaves only get Jamba and Bagnon ( <-- invaluable when quickly looking for something on a small window).

Don't worry about running out of RAF time. I managed to level 7 sets of characters (groups of 5) up to 60 and that was with losing a month of time due to a problem with my ISP.

You would be suprised how much time you waste with playing with a custom UI. Just wait till patch day when one (or more of your addons break). but it gets quicker, in no time at all you will be adept at copying folders for each character, because they have custom scripting in them.

as for the comments of other people that you should use the standard UI, that is personal preference, and varies from person to person. I myself can't stand the default Ui and run "ArkiveUI", which consists of well over 100 addons (yep patch day can be fun ) below is an old screenie of the UI.

All my accounts run the same UI, so when it comes to multiple quest selections or AOE postitioning by mouse broadcasting I dont run into any problems.

iirc for some reason ace decided to go with settings per character.

You have to go into each addon's lua file (sometimes more then one) and change the names from your main to your slave ........ have fun.

Havn't used superdupermacro but I would be lery using something not being updated
