Ever since the beginning of WoW, I've been a dps'er. My first 60 was a rogue and my 2nd 60 a dps warrior.
That rogue has visited about 5 different realms over the years and faction transferred to horde, but is still going strong.
But alas! Recently, one of the guild's main 10-man healers has announced he did only step up to fill a healing void as his offspec 6-8 months ago, and would really like to go back to dps sometimes, so we need another primary healer for the 10-mans.
So, never thought it'd happen, but a healer is going to be my main in the guild!
Yanked my vacationing 75 priest from my tribox team back to work. She's soloing now, leveling via LFD "Random LK Dungeon". I'm 76.4 and full rested, I doubt I'll see the end of the rest bar before 80 and LFD is a great way to level since it'll teach me how to be a good healer, which is the role I'm going to be filling!
I figure, 2-4 weeks I'll be 80 and decked in Triumph gear for healing, ready to step into ICC-10.
Never thought a healer would become my raiding main!

How to heal as a priest in any situation:
Is Prayer of Mending off CD?
Yes? Cast Prayer of Mending.
No? Twiddle thumbs. Look around and see if there is something fun to cast on someone so they think you are paying attention. Try Renew! Yeah...
Oh good, PoM is off CD ...
It's kinda funny but true. With the right build and the T9 set bonus PoM does most of the work for me in most situations on my priest. If I'm falling beind in healing it's only because I was forgetful about rule #1: Cast PoM... then cast it again :)

For a priest, I far prefer Discipline to Holy, as far as healing goes.
Discipline is more about preventative damage then the big heals once someone is hurt.
It does however have better twitch healing (Penance) against unexpected damage.
The mana efficiency is pretty insane.
As far as keeping a single target up, no other healer spec is as good.
Holy has better AoE/Raid Healing, with their extra talented heal.
But Disc is not a slouch for AoE heals.
For PvP, I usually go deep Disc, with 2 points in Holy for 70% less heal interrupts and then Shadow to Mind Flay.
But for PvE, its usually 58/13/0 or similar.

Have fun!
Priest is a good choice ^^ Enjoy it!
Meh healing can be fun at times but after being forced to be a healer on my paladin for the first two years I played wow I just can't see myself ever going back...

Funny about the disc vs holy thing. I've been pure holy for my entire multi boxing gig. However, I've been playing my priest solo some and in the tougher dungeons I'm finding out just how crappy a healer I really am. What I'm finding is that I never find the right time to use the big holy AE abilities like Prayer of Healing and even Circle of Healing.
I did a much better job last night in heroic PoS. My primary spells were Prayer of Mending (op spell and the best AE healing spell in my opinion), flash heal (to get the gheal/prayer of healing cast time down), renew, and a few times Holy Nova spam. So, I'm wondering if I should look at Disc since Prayer of Mending is still part of that gig so I wonder how much your 5 man AE healing is realliy hurt? Raiding is another question.

Holy nova and some prayer of healing gets my disc priest through the aoe just fine, throw out some bubbles too and you're golden, prayer of mending too of course.

So far it's been really easy leveling in LFD as Holy. Some nights are even instant-queue, with worst-case scenario a 3-4 minute queue.
95% of the time all I cast is PoM and Renew. On 90%+ of pulls I don't even have to drink afterwards, it's so mana efficient. Only time my mana dips is with a crazy pull or an undergeared tank where I have to spam some Flash Heals to keep him topped up. And when that happens, I send my shadowfiend out to regen some mana for me.
Circle of Healing, a staple of a raid-healing holy priest, is seldom used in 5-mans.
Main reason I'm holy and learning the holy healing style is because my guild needs a RAID healer, not a tank healer. All our main healers right now are tank healers. Thus the choice of Holy over Disc. Learn with what I'm going to use in a raid. :)
