Instance or questing that is the main question.
The quest money isn’t of great importance to me. I mean ok it’s nice but I would much rather level faster then have more gold by the time I hit 80.

Once I hit 78 I’m making all of my pallys the Spiked Saronite items so the armor that you would get from quests isn’t of huge importance to me.

I’m currently using Heirloom items so with this information which way is going to be the fastest route to 80 Instance grind or quest grind?

And what about AV when do you say enough is enough last night I was in an AV for 35 min which is way to long should I say screw it around the 15-20 min mark? Or is it better to just stick it out? I suppose you have to see where the progress is obviously if you’re going to win in another 5 min or so stick it out right?

Apparently AV xp isn’t affected by Heirloom items. Just wondering thanks everyone!

Quest, you will be glad you did it when it's over. Make sure all your guys have the same progress in icecrown quests so you dont have too many phasing issues (it's a nightmare when you start swaping characters from different teams.)

Don't grind. Quest.

Heirlooms should work in any PvP (they did every time I tried)

So let's lay it out real simple for everyone, courtesy of what Zarhym (http://www.wow.com/tag/Zarhym/) said in a series of posts (http://forums.worldofwarcraft.com/thread.html?topicId=19820418568&sid=1&pageNo=1#7) over the weekend:

Heirloom items currently do not provide an XP bonus in Battlegrounds.
Heirloom items should provide an XP bonus in Battlegrounds in Patch 3.2.2.
This is great news for those of us who like to power level our alts from 71 to 80 in the span of a couple days of playing via Alterac Valley farming. It's now going to go even quicker. That's a good thing, right?

The confusion of Heirloom's XP powers while in Battlegrounds is likely a result of the newness of the XP gains you can get in Battlegrounds. Eventually all that confusion will go away, and Zarhym's clear statements this weekend certainly helped with that.

Ok so at a time they didnt however after 3.2.2 they do.

Do it all. I pretty much cleared out howling fjiord and borean tundra. Theres a ton of non collection quests to do in thoes zones. There were a few to do the DEATHA and unlock the Nexus instance quests. After that I did the betrayal quest lines in Grizley Hills and Zul'Drak. I also did the quests to unlock the instance quests for Draktharon keep and Gundrak (except for the bear spirit one, screw that). Daily quests when they were up, and at 77 I picked up flying and did 100% of Northrend and was done in about 2 days playing at that point.

I quested until i got tired and frustrated with collection quests they had in quest chains. Then run an instance once and that usually gets you to the next zone. You will NEED the money from questing, dont' grind up or you'll be forced to grind cash. my 70-80 leveling left me with about 15k gold total between all toons when i hit 80.

oh, and AV xp is terrible compared to questing/instance. One slow hour long AV can net you about 50k xp and trust me, those matches do happen. Unless your alliance, don't go av except for a fun break for 20 minutes. Alliance however, maybe viable way of leveling since on my bg they win everytime and usually it's with most of the battlefield under their control.
If it weren't so damn expensive, i'd totally transfer to alliance for leveling then back to horde at 80.

I have a rogue sitting at 71 which I do not have in any team. If he sits in AV for a few days without a huge amount of killing, e.g. guarding buildings etc while I watch tv, will he get decent xp or is it all about killing? I have not done Bgs in a while and so have not experienced how the BGs work since toons started to earn xp there.

This man speaks the truth. :) I quested with the occasional instance to skip some of the collection quests, then when I needed that little XP boost for the next level, I ran an instance or two. If you pick up the quests for the instance, you can make some decent XP too. At 77, I almost stopped all questing in general, and started all the quest chains to open up all of icecrown. If you do that, the daily dungeon, daily BG, you'll fly through 77-80.

I just got done with my rogues few days ago, thet had heirlooms, i quested all the way with random av 1-3 times a day.
All in all it took me 9-10 days? Maybe a bit less, it was fast(whole process 1-80 took me few weeks, but i had long brakes between leveling.
Just remember I have a life, i also raid on 2-3 toons and my gf makes me watch a girly movie like 3 times a week( x.x)

depends on how many hours you play. I Found when questing in Northrend about 2 - 3 hours a night would get me close to a level.

She said sign your name on the dotted line, the lights went out, and Nikki started to grind...

Sorry, got that stuck in my head when I read the original post and figured I'd try to earworm half the board.

Just do quests for the nice XP and the gold. When you did some quests (you fill in the number) you queue up for an AV and you keep questing while in the queue.

You liked the AV? Do it again! Enough AV? Do some quests again!

The fastest and most bearable way of getting to 80 (for me at least).

I've just about to finish the 70-80 grind on my locks - questing the whole way.

I like questing for these reasons:

1. Money - after kitting out my guys in crafted PvP & PvE blues, I still have 2.5K on each toon...half way to epic flyers already.
2. Gear - you can cherry pick the quest lines that give gear upgrades, and keep your gear relatively current up to lvl 80. Probably more important on a PvP server than a PvE one, since people will try to gank you on a PvP sever while you level.
3. Professions - easy to level while you quest, especially the gathering profs and enchanting (DE'ing unwanted quest rewards).
4. Great questlines - Drakuru, Crusaders Pinnacle, Shadow Vault were all quite enjoyable to quest through, and do a good job at making you feel like your actions are having an effect on the areas around you... Wrathgate and the accompanying in game movie was simply EPIC...I always make a point of doing this on all my teams.

Cheers,
S.
