I don't know if I would go all out on the breastplate. It's very nice, but I dunno. Champion Wyrmrest and Argent Crusade. Get the lesser crafted BoE epics (lvl200 stuff) for less than that breastplate. Also get the JC neck and ring. Get PvP gear from WG on your DPS and Healer and start doing Heroic UK ASAP. You get a tanking weapon from the first boss. Then you can do 3 or 4 other heroics and myabe (with practice) ToC normal and ICC 5 mans on normal (first bosses at least).

if possible buy the mats for the breastplate and ask a friendly BS to make it for 50 or 100g.
on my server they try to sell it made on the AH for 6k, i got it made for 3.4k by buying the mats myself
jam in some +30 stam gems (or in my case a +10def/+15 stam, +30 stam, +10agi/+15 stam to unlock the socket bonus)

the stamina you gain buy this item will greatly help with progressing trough the heroics on your team
also the titansteel shield is not a bad choice, there are no shields in heroics to beat that except for the one that drops in heroic CoS

edit:
other cheap upgrades if you got the money for it
the tempered titansteel helm and boots add in a nice +def and +stam to your gear, depending on the price on your server, once again buy the mats yourself if that turns up cheaper

edit2:
check my pally's armory (click on wow characters under my forum name) to see how i geared him, have only been gearing him for 3 weeks now and already at 38.5k HP

I would think you'd get more out of numerous smaller upgrades, then the one massive upgrade.
But that depends on prices on your server.

A lot of the iLV 200 stuff should be pretty cheap.

If you can get into a few Naxx10 runs for badges, some of the gear will be ups for you, and the badges might add up to a piece too.

The random dungeon tool is excellent too, as people cannot "gear score" you, prior to your joining the group.

If you gear is at least, say crit immune, and 20k health buffed, you have the same gear everyone else had when we were all just reaching 80th. And heroics were doable then.

lol, thanks for the feedback everyone!! Trying frantically to update haha.

Raid gear: I don't really feel up to doing 10/25 solo with the Pally or even running 5 mans solo. I would have to be a gimp Ret dps as I won't feel comfortable tanking content I've never even seen.

I am more or less just trying to get the Pally to a stage where I can start concentrating on the other 4 classes. So cheap and quick gear ideally.

I am working on Wyrmrest Accord rep and more than halfway to revered at which time I will switch to Argent Crusade (honored already) to get the head enchant at revered. I'll be doing the Argent Tournament dailies to get enough badges for the weapons as well for the entire team which is a boost to Argent Crusade rep as well.

I am not crit immune yet but I have 2 gem slots available and missing some defense enchants. Up to 24K HP buffed though.

EDIT: I have downed some heroic bosses already (Skava, Slad'ran) but I haven't really seriously gone after a heroic yet, just messed around to gauge the difficulty gap between normal and heroic.

learn it, love it. Just pick and choose where you can hit up the top and go with options it gives for easy upgrade path. Picking the top choices in each section might not give theorycrafted optimal stats but if that was a concern then it is easier to create your own lists anyway :)

You have 20k gold you said?

What are your professions?

I suggest if you have any friendly healers to go through ToC normal a few times and pick up some of the upgrades.

The chest piece (about 3k to make) will be the biggest upgrade, especially enchanted and with +10 defence/15 stam gems

Normal toc gives you a nice stam trinket, the BS helm is nice as well for starters. The breast plate is very good mitigation.

Get the boots/belt if you want from a BS as well (should cost you about 2k each) i highly suggest the belt + a socket... 3 socket belt = 120 extra stam OR 30 def + 45 stam.

Also if you want you can level jewelcrafting for the 2 trinkets + dragons eyes (very helpful imo)

You can get def capped and over 30k life for the money you have, and if you are mainly going to do instances you'll make it back from all the items you can DE (mostly blues) as well as trash + coin etc. while gearing your shaman or whatever you're doing now.

Heres the list i made in my "guide" before it was deleted.

Helm: Tempered Titansteel Helm - argent head enchant + stam/armor metagem OR defense metagem + stam gem
Chest: Breastplate of the White Knight - 20 def enchant + 3x 10 def/15 stam
Wrists: Saronite Swordbreakers - 40 stam enchant + stam gem or 10 def/15 stam
Pants: Daunting Legplates stam leg enchant
Shoulders: Wapach's Spaulders of Solidarity hodir or inscription enchant
Gloves: Daunting Handguards forget what enchant
Boots: Spiked Deathdealers stam/def gems
Belt: Indestructible Plate Girdle stam or stam/def gems
Weapon: Not available from BOE. Need to get from quest or something.
Back: Cloak of the Iron Council 16 def enchant
Shield: Northern Barrier 20 def enchant (this ranges from 7-10k, titansteel is cheaper)
Ring1:Signet of the Earthshaker - 24 stam enchant (enchanter only)
Ring2: Signet of the Accord -24 stam enchant (enchanter only)
Amulet: Titanium Earthguard Chain

All information on the "main" page of that website is outdated. If you want any relevant information you need to go to their forums and dig for it.

If you can explain how BOE gear is BS then please go ahead and do so. It's how to effectively gear a character of any class for content without grinding heroics up front (which you can't do with a poorly geared tank if your DPS are also poorly geared unless you'd like to have trouble for a while). Obviously at this point you can get better gear than what the BOE options are, as well as better gear than what is listed on that website you've posted but that is from heroics and ToC/ToGC/ICC raids..

Get off my back, if you're going to continue to insult or troll me i will just ignore every post you make from now on in regards to me.

Tanking basics....

Get def capped, get stamina and then avoidance(parry/dodge)/mitigation(shield block) when you feel your health is high enough stop gemming for stamina and go for more avoidence/mitigation.

Please keep it civil guys.

I've scaled back a lot of the craftables to more affordable levels and added the tier pieces I intend to upgrade first so not going to bother with upgrades in those slots unless something drops in heroics that is useful.

ToC seems to have loads of upgrades. Thanks for the Lootrank link Knytestorme, very useful, are those weights pretty accurate?

Knytestorme
12-17-2009, 02:15 AM
Yeah Thinus, just about all the weights for each of the class's and specs come from either EJ or other respected theorycrafters so you should be able to use them with confidence.....then again, there is no harm in adjusting them either if you need to value a certain stat differently for some reason.

Whoops, sorry. I forgot that SOME people don't having to find things out on their own through research, they just want everything given to them on a platter. If you want them to update the site every patch just to keep data ''cutting edge'', go ahead.

And there's nothing wrong with BoEs.

Edit: Here, so your royal highness doesn't have to get his fingers dirty and look through some peksy forums. (Took three/four clicks from the main page. *GASP*)

If your shaman are geared, might be benificial to do heroics with them on your pally until you get geared =D

Grats btw.

Maintankadin's Failsafe gearing guide for a naked pally (http://maintankadin.failsafedesign.com/forum/index.php?f=21&t=27315&rb_v=viewtopic)

This guide is freshly updated to 3.3 but Maintankadin has been doing failsafe guides for years, assuming no reliance on heroic drops so even your "I got hacked and they didn't restore me" pally can get geared.

This is basically what I did.

http://www.wowwiki.com/Gear_mechanics_of_paladins_as_tanks

My pally tank will be secondary to my druid tank for now but I was planning on purchasing much of the items on Shodkan's list to make emblem farming a little smoother when I start playing him again.

Lots of good links here, I see lots of good tanking references you should definitely check out. I just recently started gearing my Paladin for tanking. I did a 3 day bender of nonstop solo heroics and many, many badges later, here is the result: http://www.wowarmory.com/character-sheet.xml?r=Kil%27jaeden&cn=Bearcatadin&gn=Legion+of+Boom

That's the result of a lot of badges, a lot of cash, and 0 raid instances. My GS is sitting at 4545 and I'm comfortable that I'm ready to tank just about any raid I need to (except ICC, wtb wep / shield from HoR kkthks)

its crazy how fast you can gear up a fresh 80 now... I looked over some of my "forgotten" 80s and was astounded at their lack of gear.... I plan on doing solo pug heroic farming to get all my toons to a decent baseline gear level, so I can be able to get into most any raid, should the need arise. It's really quick too, especially if you do the weekly raid for more free loot...

Completely off topic but related to this post. Svper any comparisons on Pally vs. Bear? I started my group with a Pally tank but my past solo days were as a bear tank. I really just did not like the Pally tank as much. I went back to my Bear a few weeks ago and just have not looked back. I wonder if there is a point where a Pally due to gear just out shines the bear. Right now I see them at even keel for tank and spank bosses.

I've neglected my team since last Thursday, and since I've been pugging randoms on my Paladin, so I think I've got a decent feel for at least heroic tanking with her. IMO Paladins are better overall tanks. Block and Parry are ridiculously OP. I've tanked for years as a bear, and I think I'll probably always tank with a bear, but damn. You don't know what your missing until you see how little damage you tank in comparison. I won't be replacing my bear, I'm just far too comfortable with bear tanking, but it's clear to me now why so many people rave about paladin tanks. My biggest gripe is mana. It just feels wrong to me to have mana as a tank mechanic and I hate waiting to drink, rage just seems to make so much more sense, but it's probably just because I've tanked that way for so long.

Well, my pally tank is now almost as geared as he is going to get from heroics. I haven't managed to down HoR yet, I get past the first few waves but still need to work out a tactic for the 2nd boss. I have almost enough badges for a full PvP set if I feel like getting it.

Pimped out Pally (http://www.wowarmory.com/character-sheet.xml?r=Thaurissan&n=Msblonde)

Thanks for all the links and tips. I am probably going to buy the Saronite Sword Breakers for wrists and currently I am wearing 5/5 T9, I may get one of the non-set pieces. Once I get enough Frost emblems might pick up one of those pieces as well.

I don't have the confidence to solo tank for PuG raids yet as I haven't done any of the raid instances. I didn't do Naxx back in the day either. I still have a 5x shaman team to gear up so my current plan is to run the pally with 4x shaman and get them heroic/triumph geared and then run the other Shaman solo and do some PuG raids with the Shaman to learn the encounters and observe tanking strats for my pally to tank raids.

I am also tempted to run my disc priest with 4x shaman in arenas and BGs just for kicks. The world is my oyster.

Nice to see you got geared up so well in a couple weeks! Gives me confidence for my up and coming prot pally.

I've run plenty of random heroics now with low gearscore tanks that did an amazing job. The most important thing obviously is to be crit-immune (540 Def). I mean, I've run with crit-immune tanks that only had 26k buffed hp and they did an amazing job. And I've run with 5k+ gearscore tanks with 40k unbuffed that couldn't hold aggro in a bucket.

I'm planning to split my tri-box team and level my protadin solo thru random LK dungeon in the dungeon tool. Queueing as a tank is instant on my battlegroup, hopefully the same is true for non-heroics in Northrend.

I'm not *quite* crit immune at present (4.78% chance to be missed, which means 0.22% chance to be crit by a +3 mob), but I don't think I'll be tanking many +3 mobs in non-heroics. Plus if it really comes down to it I can throw a +20 def enchant on my shield pretty cheap (my main's an enchanter that's usually got lotsa mats lying around)

This is my protadin, that will very shortly start leveling to 80 exclusively via random dungeon finder tool:
http://www.wowarmory.com/character-sheet.xml?r=Shadowsong&n=Foreground

Then at 80, I plan to gear her with enough BOE's and enchants and gems to hit 540 def then hopefully start tanking heroics w/o too much difficulty. I know it sucks when you have to enchant/gem to hit the def cap, but that'll improve as her gear improves. At least now my main can buy her the head enchant and shoulder enchant and mail them across (love the new BoAcct head/shoulder enchants)
