I'm looking for a keyboard that won't wake my wife up. Comps in the bedroom, she works an earlier shift now.

I did buy one that said "Silent" on it, structured beneath the key pads the way a Laptop keyboard is, but the damn thing is nearly as loud as my regular "Logitech Wireless KB/Mouse Combo" Keyboard, just a slightly different pitch of *thunk* (More like a *Tink* now).

I'm picturing something with sturdier plastic pads, a longer stem to prevent lateral movement, and some rubber or other non-degradable cushioning.

Any suggestions? I ask because I don't wish to be duped by advertising again. Advice based on experience is better :)

You are looking at this wrong you do not need a quieter keyboard you need to plug your wife's ears. :)

I used to have a rollout keyboard. You literally rolled it up and stuck it in a pocket in your laptop bag. It was church mouse quiet, but I don't know if they still make something like that.

There's a thread on silentpcreview.com about quiet keyboards:

Hey Freddie,

Nice second link haha. I researched the IBM Lenova keyboard the first thread was talking about to find it is exactly the same Keyboard I'm typing on right now while at work :p I think I'll continue my search :p The rollout ones have always piqued my interest, but I'd have to try one before buying it, as they require quite a firm push.

Cheers!

Funny coincidence. :) This thread made me curious so I googled around. I'm surprised how little info there is about this on the web.

Even silentpcreview.com doesn't seem to have anything about it, and I think they are pretty much the main place on the web for silent pcs.

The rollout keyboards are very quiet. I use one for my laptop also like Coltimar. Mine is a cheap one from Bed Bath and Beyond. It actually doesn't need much pressure at all. Only thing is after you've beel playing with a G15/G11 for so long you miss all the extra buttons. lol.

I will second this. I just picked one up a week ago. For $50 it works out really well (at least on my hackintosh)

I was actually gonna suggest this from BB&B. I've seen them up there, but was skeptical about buying one. How well do they work out anyway? I was thinking about buying one for my laptop for traveling so I wouldn't have to lug around my G11 KB anymore. The macro keys are great, but I can learn to play without them if I ever choose to replace my KB.

That's hilarious, the sound of typing actually puts me to sleep!

They keyboards from BB&B work pretty well for me. I sometimes bring it to work to use in my office as I don't care for the ibm keyboards we use. Old, loud and obnoxious. I've had my rollout rubber keyboard for over a year now. Still feels new after being rolled, pushed, shoved, and tossed around in my laptop bag.

Edit; I honestly didn't expect something from BB&B to last this long and get this much usage.

I have one of those rubber keyboards. I got mine at Staples for 10 bucks. Typing on it now. Have had it for over year. It is very quiet. But you do have to make sure your push is centered on the key pad or you don't get the press. And the backspace button is unusually small. I hit \\\ a lot..lol
Other then that I like it. It does take a little firmer push but I can handle it. I have one in pink and baby blue!
