I am looking to build a new computer because I am finally in an area where I can afford to start upgrading.

Right now, I am stuck on which route to go.
The infamous, Intel vs AMD.

AMD is cheaper, so I can splurge a bit more on peripherals and such.
Intel seems better for overclocking.

But I Am still on the crossroads.

This will be my 3rd build, and I am looking for a "Bang for my Buck" type deal.
I started my first build with the AMD Athlon X2. Then the Intel q6600.

This is what I am looking at for the Intel build:

CPU: Intel Core i5 750 $234
Mobo: Gigabyte P55A-UD3R $179
RAM: Kingston 4GB DDR3-1333 $109
HDD: Seagate Barracuda 1TB $107
GPU: 1GB ATI Radeon HD5770 $210
Case: Lian Li Lancool PC-K58 $92
PSU: Corsair VX-550 $106
ODD: Sony-NEC Optiarc AD-7240S $43
CPU HSF: Noctua NH-U12P SE2 $85
Peripherals: [ 21.5" / UltraFlat / MX518 / X-230 ] (+$299)

Total: ($1,464) AUD

AMD Build:

CPU: AMD AM3 Phenom II X4 $208
Mobo: Gigabyte MA785GT-UD3H $108
RAM: Kingston 4GB DDR3-1333 $109
HDD: Western Digital Caviar Green 808GB $75
GPU: HIS 1GB ATI Radeon HD5770 $191
Case: Lian Li Lancool PC-K58 $92
PSU: Antec Neo Eco 500W $70 + optional extra cable (http://www.staticice.com.au/cgi-bin/search.cgi?q=8pin+ATX+Extension+Cable)
ODD: Sony-NEC Optiarc AD-7240S $43
Peripherals: [ 21.5" / UltraFlat / MX518 / X-230 ] (http://whirlpool.net.au/wiki/?tag=rmp_sg_whirlpoolpcs_systems) (+$299)

Total: ($1,200)

Oh and also, what are some reputable vendors based in Australia in which I can buy from for a decent price?

I am from the US originally, where I could use Newegg or Amazon.

Or are there ways of ordering in the US and having everything shipped over seas?

I'd imagine you could order from a lot of places.
Newegg or Amazon or others.

But shipping would not be cheap.

MSY (http://www.msy.com.au/)
http://www.msy.com.au/Parts/PARTS.pdf

Built 9 boxes through these guys so far - no problems either on service or price

If MSY doesn't have the parts, umart (http://www.umart.com.au/)will have it - possibly the same to $1-$2 more expensive but, for my personal experience, their majorly lack customer services skills (if you want to go corsair psu - you'll have to deal with umart - all mine are corsairs and they are rock solid).

If you do go to umart, make sure you place your order online either instore (there's always a pc for customer to use instore) or from home via setting up an account - the price you see advertised tends to be the internet price - not the store price.

Staticice has a searchable dbase of most 'stores' so you can get something else closer to you if you prefer:
http://www.staticice.com.au/

Type in your part code and follow it with 'state:NSW' for example, to reduce the list

I'd normally also highly recommend checking out the OCAU (http://overclockers.com.au/wiki) wiki for suggested builds but, for the first time I can ever remember, it is down atm. Had a few blackouts/power surges last weekend and I can only assume something got frizzled.

Cheers Nox, I found a website in which someone I work with recommended.

Now, here is the deal...

This is sort of the build I am going for, however... I want to knock down the price a bit. So, what can I do?

Gigabyte GA-MA790FXT-UD5P Motherboard
AMD Phenom II X4 965 Black Edition
CoolerMaster Silent Pro M700
Kingston HyperX KHX2000C9D3T1K2 (2x2GB) DDR3
Radeon HD4870
CoolerMaster HAF 922 Case
Samsung P2350 23in Widescreen LCD Monitor
Seagate Barracuda 7200.12 1TB ST31000528AS
Logitech Media 600 Keyboard USB
Microsoft Windows 7 Home Premium 64bit OEM
Logitech G5 Laser Mouse
Pioneer DVR-218L DVDRW OEM
$1871 AUS

Ideally, I'd like to drop the price by at least $300.

Any suggestions?

Oh and, www.overclockers.com.au was hacked.

They are currently in the process of repairing and backing up their servers. :(

These kind of questions should be asked on a reputable site like www.tomshardware.com . If you want answers from experts, that's the place to go. Besides their awesome forums, you can find thorough tests on a lot of pc hardware, and head to head comparison's with actual detailed data for you to look at and decipher for yourself if you don't trust an answer on the forums. They even do a regular "best bang for the buck" pc build article.

Right now an I7 system is the way to go ....

All my stuff is AMD but the Intel 920 on a X58 MB is the win.
