View Full Version : Raiding Roles - Where do we all fit?

Before we get too crazy on this raiding thing, we need to discuss roles. As multiboxers, we have a wide range of classes / specs available, often times each one of us can cover any role in a raid.
But that doesn't mean the raid will be big enough to cover all of our toons. And everyone has strengths and weaknesses, as well as personal raiding agendas.
I am 90% comfortable main tanking, main healing, and dpsing in a raid environment. I know a lot of others aren't (and I didn't get here overnight.. there was a steep learning curve). And there is some stuff I just can't do, so I adjust accordingly. Sometimes I lean on solo players in a raid, having them target for my toons, or my toons following them around in case I need to handle something complicated on the tank.
There are many "tricks" to this - as everyone will learn as we get deeper into raiding a multiboxing guild.
But anyway, what does everyone else WANT to do? I want everything to be fun and relaxed. If you don't want to heal - you shouldn't have too (although we need healers, or we don't get anywhere).
Also not everyone can tank. Everyone wants to tank, but its just not feasible. That doesn't mean you can't spec your tank to DPS and beat on stuff for the night instead, and still loot up some tank gear along the way. I have no issues about this. In heroics my brother and I swap back and forth tanking, because we both like doing it. We can do this in a raid too, as long as gear permits. (you tank this one, I'll tank the next.. etc). Doesn't really matter to me. :)
So speak up everyone, what do YOU want to do? What are you comfortable doing?
And I'm willing to host some off-hour off-night Naxx10 / OS10 runs to get people used to 'boxing raids and gearing up. I'll even solo heal it - I don't have to 'box.

Raid environment I bring the heals to the table.
I do particularly well @ Tank Healing, but I'm raid ready for ret or prot as well, both hit and def capped.
Came from DiT where we did alot of 10H content in UD.

...and we can do (some) 25 mans too. We had a good deal of success in Naxx25, and stomped OS25 (still do). Biggest problem here was always getting 25 raid-ready toons to show up.
I'm sure we can pull off Onyxia25 with some gear and practice. Doubt ToC25. We could do *some* stuff in Ulduar 25... just need practice. its all about how serious everyone wants to get and push. Some nights WILL be wipe fests..... it happens. That's learning to raid. :D

I can vouch for Fenril's tanking, as much shit as I give him, he's one of the best I've raided with, as long as he has slept recently and isn't on a 3 day bender :) I can also vouch for Gurb's healing ability. Ability to not get gibbed the first 15 seconds of ONY, is up in the air :D
As for me,
I spent nearly 4 months in a hard core raiding guild as the MT with my druid. I've tanked everything except ToC25, and ToGC. I'm 100% confident in my tanking abilities and survivability. I'll show you silly plate wearers how a bear rolls any day of the week. I also have a very good cat set, pretty much BIS from 10 man reg for soft cap ArP. I'm perfectly fine tanking or dpsing.
My resto shaman, Svperscarred, is 2 pc T8, 2pc T9, heroics / crafted geared. I've healed Ulduar 10 without any issues. My other 2 shaman, Svperstarved and Svperwrecked are both hit capped for raids with decent gear, 2pc T8, heroics / naxx / ulduar gear. I've run both through the first half of Ulduar 10 and one has a couple of the hard modes as well.
My warlock, is in pretty craptastic gear. He's got 2pc T8, and some crafted gear, but he wasn't in my main boxing group until I moved here, so he's a bit far behind.
What I'm comfortable doing:
I had good luck with running my lock, 2 shaman, and resto shaman in Hyjal. I think I can easily transfer what I learned there to any current content and effectively raid heal / off heal a MT while maintaining DPS on the other 3 toons. I don't think I could DPS with my druid AND box other toons, the cat DPS rotation is just too complicated. I'm also perfectly fine running my solo healer, or solo tank. I really don't care. I'd like to gear up my lock, but I don't mind doing my own leg work to get him caught up.
I'm very comfortable talking boss strategies. I know most strategies and tricks for just about all the current content. I think what we as a group need, is to run through these strats and create what will work for us boxing it. because it's sometimes going to vary on how we do things. I think we can clear most of ulduar, but the trick is going to be do we have the geared people to do it. A fresh 80 just isn't going to cut it. If you aren't spell hit capped, you're going to be lagging behind. A lot of fights are also going to require specials setups, it would be nice to know these in advance, but that won't always be the case. A good DPS check is going after Ignis. He's really easy to get to, and he's not very forgiving. I would use him as a DPS check on how ready we are.

DPS/Heal/Tank, idc. I'm comfortable with just about anything, as I'm sure at some point I've done so in the past. I ran Naxx10 with another boxer back in January/Feb, so I'm used to heal/tank/dpsing as necessary; being used as a follow focus (i.e, saftey dancing). In 25s, I've mostly filled the dps slots, as in my old 25man guild our dps was always lacking so I've run melee (DK not pally + 4 elemental shamans).
If you need a healer, I'd rather run my pally holy (still building a healing set) and keep the shamans dps. I could even run holy pally/resto shaman + 3 elementals if necessary, as I did that back in the BC/ZA days when I would run double healer +dps.
Gearscore wise.. meh, I have no idea. I'm sporting all the Conquest stuff on my team (pally has some holy ToC drops, and going to use all my conquest badges now for holy items) and based on imba, I'm "set" for Ulduar content.

I am comfortable with anything really. I have an 80 tank and 80 healer. For our raids however I am comfortable with making my tank dps and my healer a general group/tank healer. I have done instances with my mixed team and understand the role of healing (that is, she only heals, nothing else, some people don't get this).
I am woefully undergeared. It is easy to do pve stuff, including instances in quest greens because you know how your toons operate.
So if you don't mind a undergeared dedicated disc priest and a undergeared arms warrior, then I can join :)
Once I get my dps bank (warlock, mage, druid ) to 80 they can join the dps/heal raid portions of the group.

I've got a fairly well geared Pally tank, priest healer, and lots of ranged DPS casters. All my toons are pretty much maxxed in Naxx 25 gear, or heroic badge gear, so I'm right around the Ulduar mark, probably ok in ToC too, but on the lower end. My shaman are mostly PvP geared, but they still do ok in a raiding environment, even with all that wasted resil and stam.
I'd prefer to just DPS on most raids, I'm one of those guys who likes to min/max (without going overboard) and top DPS charts, so with a lock and a mage, I am comfortable. If I need to tank, or heal, I'd prefer not to do more than 2 roles at once, and even on that note, I'd really rather single role raid at the moment.

I fit in the "please carry me and gear me up" role :-)
This being said I did raid solo heals and dps and I enjoy healing competent groups - I'm learning tanking (and having been a healer and dps and boxer helps for that) and I've been pretty successful at simple tanking so I can OT at least

I'm best suited to healing - I get a little spastic as DPS sometimes and die at inopportune times, but can run whichever toon y'all need most.
Toraneko = Resto druid (raided BC and Wrath, geared for all the current content and then some)
Ishbel = Enhance/Resto Shammy (geared more for enhance than resto right now)
