get an addon called gearscore
it will tell you your and other gearscore. Dont use sites like wow hearoes etc, they have their own rating, and it differes from what people usually use when they ask in trade.
Around 4.5k is decent gs.

I keep trying to tell people my gear score, but every time I type, it comes out "Eat me".

4.5K GS is signifigant overkill for 5 man heroics. 3000 should be more than sufficient, probably lower.
3.5 is probably fine for VOA as that is designed to be run by pugs.

I love trying to PuG raid and get asked for GS. Usually they dont respond back when its my new team (they are all low 4ks). Assholes!

I love it even more when the person leading the pug has a lower GS than you do. Carried much?

yeah i never use this addon to evaluate people i am inviting into my group, the only time i use it is to WTF smash people who are fucking around with me..
great story, little off topic
was in VOA 25 man yesterday, he said wow MB... ur dps sucks prolly.. so bassically ur 3 alts just die from fire and ur main dps? wow.. i pull 4k on each guy /lol... then he goes on to say, dude u suck at arena, i look at is 3/5 hateful 2/5 crafted pvp... and his arena 100-500... told him to look at my 1750..
he never responded again. ;)

Gearscore is the best of the worst addons of all time.
Good in itself, but it is used in the most inappropriate ways by arrogant fuckwad players.
Quote For Truth.
Lets review this thread...
Around 4.5k is decent gs.
Decent? For what? 4.5k gearscore on the right player is more than adequate for ToGC and Ulduar Hard Modes...

I'd agree 3.5 is fine for VOA, in fact I'd go as low as 3k without even blinking. If the players got their gear enchanted and gemmed properly (something GS doesn't show) I'd go 2500 because it shows they care enough to probably not suck.
More like - overgeared much?
Most of the content done with "x" minimum could be done with a much lower gearscore - raid leaders just stack the raid to be overgeared so they can compensate for mistakes.
Twice in one thread... spot on.
People don't want to WORK to earn their loot, they want it handed to them. This is why I've quit pugging and started GDKP runs... pay me to get you loot, it's awesome.

Yeah, all raiders know about all the addons out there. Just put him on your ignore list and move on.

meh, I first started running heroics with like 2k gearscore, and at 3k they were getting easy. now at over 4k they are a joke. Isn't Naxx 25 supposedly a 2700 GS raid?
And Gearscore is very broken. It doesn't account for Gems, or enchants, or talent builds, or anything, other than what the itemlevel of a given item is. It's only useful for things like Flame Leviathan, where your gear is used to determine the hitpoints and damage output of the vehicle you are in. I think my main team is between 4k and 4.3k and my shamans are at 4.3-4.4k but they are in all PvP gear.
IF they can come up with an update to gearscore that detects what spec you are in, and cross references the gear to match the spec, and rate accordingly, then its a bit more useful, but as it is now, I can pad gearscores by mixing gear from both of my specs, or even use random crappy items that are of a higher ilvl... I'd rather have a 3k gearscore dps with proper gemming, enchants and spec, than a 5k GS rogue wearing druid spellpower gear, who bought the toon off of ebay...
But besides all that, Fursphere hit the nail on the head. Nobody who is pugging wants to risk ANY sort of mistake, so they only stuff raids with a bunch of extremely overgeared people, who have already done the hardmodes and claim that it's a "badge run" As if it wasnt faster to get more badges in less time from heroics... I've seen sillyness like "LFM Naxx 25 PST GS and Achieve 4500+ only Badge Run" and the pug leader is at like 3500....

Stacking possibly. However when there are multiple people in the raid with less gearscore and you kick someone out with a higher gearscore that's just carrying to me.

I installed GS for a quick minute to see how it worked, and yanked it soon afterward, it's a seriously "chatty" addon that's constantly polling players around you. No thanks.
I don't PuG - I started MBing specifically to not do that, so I laugh at the GS drama. The raiders and wanna-be raiders have been cockblocking new players from higher content since vanilla, it's nothing new. GS will be forgotten when Cata comes out, and people just want warm bodies in the initial rush to hit the new content, then it will be something new to cockblock the newbies and slower levelers.
The majority of people who play this game have severe personality disorders and massive amounts of hostility towards other people, and have zero social skills. Why else are they online 24/7 playing a game, instead of out there mingling?
I'm long out of college, I did the bar scene, i'm fine spending some of my spare time playing, but I do not get college kids living in wow - I had a BLAST in college, indulging in everything i could find, I could'nt imagine wasting all those opportunities over a video game, unless it got me laid. :)
Anyway, GS is just another chapter in the neverending passive-aggressive hostility that infects the online community called WoW. In BC it was requiring you'd cleared Kara to go to Kara, because it was - wait for it - "a badge run". In vanilla it was the ridiculous hoops you had to jump through to get into "elite" guilds. Now it's GS. Anything to make themselves feel better about themselves and the time they spend in the game, instead of something truly rewarding, I guess.
When I see stupidity in chat on my server, I just think of the average, overweight, red faced squeaky-voiced Blizzcon attendee behind the typing, and it puts it all in perspective for me. I just laugh. I play WoW to get away from the world, and relax, not let some pent up sexually frustrated teen make me feel bad because I don't measure up to some artificial standard they've made up to give themselves meaning and validation.

The worst part about PuG raids? The wait to get them filled... You can be at 21/25 and as soon as someone gets invited, one person will leave. So frustrating.

That and when you finally get full and get to the stone to summon you find out that 2 people are afk and not coming back. Then people start quiting from the wait at the same speed it takes to get replacements. I mean who the hell joins a raid and has to go 20 minutes into it?

I cant blame 15 people with 5k gear scores if they don't wanna carry some fresh 80's with 2500 gear scores through ToC25 or if a guild is short one man for a hard mode attempt and doesn't want to hit up armory for every person responding in lfg.
I can also sympathize with everyone who doesn't wanna be reduced to a gear score number but since its become the craze to use GS to screen pugs, Ive had much better experiences over all in pugging 25 man content. Maybe I would feel differently if I tried raiding on a new team with a lesser GS.
All that said I didnt keep the add on installed myself, I generally leave pug recruiting to others and just enjoy playing with my friends and making new friends as we pug raid with our alts. I have enough addons cluttering up my system that I dont need another one.
Peace
the main thing about gearscore thats weird to me is that theres so many different ones. theres the addon then wow-heroes and be.imba are both different and im sure theres even more than that. as far as the 'gear score doesnt mean that the player is good' argument goes it is true to an extent, but if youre about to try a higher tier raid its nice to know that the tank that is trying to get in the group just straight up doesnt have the gear to do it no matter how good he is.
personally, though, i dont check gear score for anything but giving other guildies a hard time. we have fun with it just having an ongoing gear race. though i do know that as a holy pally some of the higher scored emblem gear will actually gimp me slightly.
thats why i take it with a grain of salt and just play with other nice people. i usually try and stay away from the raging nerds out there who smash their keyboard into their flatscreen cause we wiped on emalon once...
tl;dr if the guy gave you a hard time about your score then you dont want to be in his raid anyway cause he sucks.

You are so right, but wrong in the way they use it. They use the one program right or wrong that gives them a quick Idea of the toon's gear. There is no right gear score unless you use iLevels and look at chants and gems. Too much effort for the instant grat teen.

I lead a lot of pug25s and love GearScore, but don't rely on it. In a matter of seconds, I can mouseover my raid frames and distinguish who needs further review. If someone is wearing greens or TBC epics, I can find out without armorying/inspecting every member of the raid. I'm not going to balk at 4200 vs 4400, or even <4k, but if I see a 2500 pop-up, expect I will inspect you.
In re to QQ: Don't try to run TOC25 if your wearing 5 pcs of T5 equivalent, I will catch you.

Use gearscore light, it can tell you the GS and not do all the "chatty" crap.
My main is only like 4.4k gs... but I can still bust a solid 4k sustained in ToC pushing almost 5k sometimes.

I brought my shammies on a pug raid that required linked achievement, was quite entertaining to finally finish after a few wipes and see the douche that was spamming trade forever gain a new completion achievement...now I just respond to the trade spam with show me yours I'll show you mine.

I've found that later in the wow week (especially monday night) most pug leaders are more and more desperate, and will let anyone in. I've even seen specific "alt runs" where they simply want to know your own level of skill/experience just so they know how to fill out the raid, and to what extent they need to explain fights to people.
I've even got all 5 of my PvP geared shaman into a VoA 25 on a monday right after we took over WG, and all 5 of me got the achievement each time.... I even got an item for my resto offspec. I tried to do 5 of a 10 man, but they were trying to do Koralon with only one tank, and 2 healers, and needless to say, that it wasn't nearly enough, and theres so much movement required in that fight, my dps was severely gimped, and due to lack of healers, i was spammin chain heals during the mass aoe phase, so i ran oom rather quickly.

This...
There was some idiot spamming chat looking for a pug for naxx25, wanted the achievement or superior to get onto the raid. So I checked him out on armory and both wow-heroes and be.imba... he had a couple of greens a few blues and the rest were iLevel 200 epics. so he failed his own superior check... so I checked out his achievements next and he hadnt even cleared naxx10...
So I sent him a /w telling him that he was a bell end and slapped him on ignore.
I dont pug with my pally healer these days... but I will pug with either my shaman or my hunter, otherwise it is too much effort and too much grief.

When people were big into the "LFM: Naxx, must have achievement" BS, I'd log on my bank alt with the achievement-faker mod and send him a tell linking my "fully cleared" naxx achievement. Half the time they'd toss me an invite and I'd sit there until someone in the raid asked "why is there a level 5 in the raid?"
I agree with everyone here though, knowledge+skill can easily give someone +/- 2000 score. Last time I cleared 10m ToC normal we had 2 alts with blues (and one still had 3 greens) and it was still a full clear no wipes.

I prefer to play the odds, and a person with a 5k GS is much more LIKELY to be able to out-dps a person with a 4k gearscore. Of course there's no accounting for taste, but there is no way to tell who the better players are unless you know them, and that's why you always fiull a raid with friends and guildies first, and PuG the last spots with people from their GS.
If your GS isn't up to par, pad it with PvP gear, it is hella easy to get and way over budgeted on GS. A full DEADLY set is 4400 GS.. which is enough to get you into any raid on our server, except maybe ToGC.
