Yo.

I've got a bunch of toons in the 60s from RAF (4 shammies, 4 boomkin, pally, mage, hunter, lock, priest).

The only one who have professions on them are the mage and pally since they're from my main account pre-RAF.

I'm really trying to get back to the shammy team to level and dork about. The leader of the 4 will likely raid at some point if I can get there.

I also see them as a potential gold factory if I can get their professions up. I know some veterans have a dozen alchemists transmuting every day.

1- For a 4 toon team (shammies, later my boomkins then a mixed team) what profession layout would you recommend for effectiveness and profit? My feral main is Mining/JC, my baby pally is also Mining/JC.

2- Any tips on how to go about skilling up said professions, aside from traipsing around starting areas and then moving up? (I didn't realize for the longest time how well mining can be skilled through the AH and smelting). Any specific macros, binds, addons you recommend? Zones or instances that were a godsend?

I'm not exactly drowning in gold or even that much time (I only get a handful of hours a week outside raid time to play anymore). Thankfully I have a buddy who's a serious goblin and he helps with raid consumables.

Do a metric shit ton of dailies every day to make a bizzare amount of gold so you can powerlevel these professions.

Farming yourself is just painful.

Amen Brotha! It cost me 2500ish to level eng to max.. it took me a few days to make that much! i leveled from zero to hero ( max ) in one day. It would have taken forever to farm the mats.

What he said ^

I did the farming route for one toon. No more! When the rest of my toons are 80 I will do dailies until all my profs are maxed.

depends on if you can find the mats needed in the AH.. Wait till max level and do dailies for gold. Then like everyone else said. Powerlevel them with the gold you make from dailies. Don't bother leveling up the professions until you know for sure that team will be played.
On the ally side I have all my professions on my mixed team but they are at lvl 70 and I doubt I will level them any further. Sucks. lol. Now I am trying to get professions on my lvl 80 team but the AH doesn't have much currently in the way of mats.. so I will have to farm for some of my mats. Farming is definately painful.

Hrm good point.

Isle of Quel'danas may be a good spot to camp them out once I get them to 70, right now the shammies are 64, their pally is 61 and the booms are just 60.

Ok so then what on professions?

For efficiency I assume I want 1 of each gatherer (pally or feral covers mining), enchanting (on the main shammy at least) to melt/etc. What about the rest? Which professions does it make the most sense to skip, which ones to double or triple (like JC or alch for daily or transmute)? I've got a source of glyphs for personal use, do I need to bother with an inscriptionist? Is leatherworking even practical for multiboxers with easy badge gear?

My 64 mage is a tailor (only capped it to BC standards) and I have no blacksmiths (doubt I want one really).

What profession mix have you found strongest for a boxer, both for effectiveness and for gold earning?

edit: If they're not as likely to be played, they can burn some dailies fast in queldanas for a little supplemental loot, 4 shammies (1 pally) can earn more in 20-30 min there than my main can alone, which is often the time i have avail.

Agreed with Fur, if you are covering multiple professions you want to just be able to buy the mats unless they are readily available where you are leveling. Cheaper in the end to just make gold and buy and power level them, then to gather everything you need.

This. I have 9 toons with epic flyers. I don't farm anything except mounts :_) The trade off, is 3 or 4 days a week I do 20+ dailies.

Pretty much.. the only farming you do is if you want Skinning, Mining or Herbalism on your toon.
Since you'll have to gather them yourself.

Well, can also farm the Hodir reputation pieces, by running HoS / HoL (think they drop in both).
But then you're there for the Badges more then the rep pieces, which are something extra to put on the AH.

Just a warning. I was farming dailies in TBC for 1-2hrs a day for the 25K for epic mounts. It wasn't fun. I ended up quitting shortly after getting my epic mounts.

If the game gets to be boring, take a break.
Burn out is a serious threat, especially when you level a team and then another.

I believe I've been playing wow for close to 4 years.
I've taken 3 three month vacations from the game.
Along with a couple of 2-3 breaks.

It helps to keep the game fresh.
You can log in and have fun again.

Hrm.

thinking that scraping together the gold to power up enchanting on one of them before capping level might make sense, since I then would be able to DE all the instance drops.

edit:
Otherwise I'm thinking
Mining/JC on tank (pally or feral)

Enchant/JC on main shammy
Insc/Alch
Skin/Alch
Herb/Alch for the rest

Though the third alchemist could be swapped to JC, but alch should be cheaper to level, depends on how lucrative either is really. Very little interest in Blacksmithing, Leatherworking, or even tailoring (my mage can make bags in any case).

Maybe change the second prof for that last shammy to engineering well down the road, have never been into engineering though ironically I am one professionally.

If you weren't having fun - why were you playing? No wonder you quit.

Congratulations on completely missing the point.

Why not JC/Alch for all of them? My team has the gather skills (mining, skinning, herbing) too.. It does add to the gold pile as you level up, but I honestly think it's not worth it. There were too many times where I had to to stop earning XP to level the gathering prof to be the level of the zone I am in (approx. 5xlevel). Also I instance a lot and so I miss out on the herb/ores. My skinning is maxed out and the others are in the upper 300s. Even now when I see a node I don't bother with it. Skinning is easy as the mob is right there. Just my 2 copper,
