View Full Version : Gear or Epic Mounts?

I am pretty close to hitting 80 with my team now. Been pondering if I should go for a quick gear upgrade on tank and slaves, or get epic mounts instead. It is nice with the mounts, but I figure they will only provide a small upgrade in terms of travel speed. My goal is to start doing heroics as soon as possible. Is it just stupid to get this stuff or?
Looking at what items AH could offer I was mainly thinking of getting some good gear for the tank, and maybe some gear for the rets (I play an all paladin team).
Tempered Titansteel Helm: 600g
Tempered Titansteel Treads: 450g
Titanium Earthguard Chain: 400g
Titanium Earthguard Ring: 800g
Titansteel Shield Wall: 600g
Tank stuff: about 2900g.. not that bad imo
DPS stuff
Titansteel Destroyer 1100-1500g, so lets say 1500g
Spiked Titansteel Helm: 600g
Ice Striker's Cloak: 350g
Dps stuff: about 2500 x4 = 10k

I would go with mounts. The mounts will serve you well for the rest of your chars life, throughout the next expac, etc.
Its a huge quality of life upgrade.
Gear is always being recycled. Mounts are not.
Get the mounts.

If you religiously do dailies, the mounts will pay for themselves pretty quick.
If you don't, they're just a waste of money. I don't have epic mounts on my current "main" team and just don't miss them at all. The 150% speed increase is fine for me personally, but then I'm not a daily grinder(!).
My goal is to start doing heroics as soon as possible.
With this stated goal, I PERSONALLY would spend the cash to gear your tank in BoE epics and not bother spending money on the others in the team. That will at least get you into heroics more quickly, which in turn gets you cycling through badge gear and drops.
Once you're there, and assuming you have a (dis)enchanter, it won't take you long to earn the money back and deck your team out with epic flyers if that's what floats your boat.

I haven't even started on professions yet, but I will do enchanting eventually...
It's a tough choice but I'm leaning towards atleast equipping the tank with some purples and getting the titansteel destroyer for the rets.

Doing 25 of the dailies in Ice Crown, nets you around 300+ gold per toon. That's 1500 a day. Get the mounts, spend a week and a half doing dailies, or whatever you need for the cash. Like mentioned above. As soon as old world is opened up for flying in the expansion, or you need to move about northrend/outlands, the epic fliers are very nice.

It depends on what you want to do with your time and your goals. If you want to grind heroics then gear is your better bet. The gear will ultimately help you in the grind over your epic flyers. If you want to do dailies with the most efficiency then getting your epic flyers will definately help you there.
Really the epic flyers are nice but not a complete necessity. With any Pally in the group the crusader aura is a nice boost to the reg flyers as it is. Also your epic flyers won't help you in instances.

I almost never pug, but I spent about 4 hours in a naxx 10 pug with my healer one night, and got 4 epic upgrades - saved a TON of money on BOE epics ... you may even be able to off-tank a good naxx10 pug with some BOE epics on your MT, and get a ton of good upgrades ... 2-5 upgrades in one night with a decent pug (or guild run) ? just a thought ...

If you farm the really good tank stuff from quests and instances, and maybe the BoE blue Daunting stuff, you can start UK, Drak and Gundrak. You won't clear them right away but you will get some gear from there and badges. I recommend the mounts as well.

Gear the tank out as fast as you can. It will save you the headache of constantly healing him and you can concentrate on dpsing more. My main paladin rarely takes damage in heroics now that his block is above what trash can hit for. Only magic attacks get to him now, makes gearing a group so damn easy.

Yeah, I figured gearing the tank would be most important. I'm pretty sure (I hope) that the cash will be rolling in later. Should ding 80 later today when I get back from work. Gonna get some cheaper BoE epics for the tank and see what he can do in terms of tanking.

Personally, I'd go with the epic flyers.
That with cold weather flying really makes everything a lot easier.
Under an hour of dailies gets me 1150g a day (running 15 dailies in my route).
From dailies I bought my tank basically all of the Ulduar 25/Naxx25 BoE's (pre ToC).
280% vs 150% is basically double the speed, so dailies are maybe 15-20 mins faster.
When I was starting dailies it was 280% vs 60% flying... easier choice.
If you really want to do heroics now...
The tank is the key position; a geared tank makes a lot of stuff a ton easier then a geared anything else.
150% flying speed is quite decent.

Replying to nobody inparticular...
It doesn't matter how you look at this,. epic flyers simple don't get you into heroics more quickly than a geared tank does.
And that's what his goal is - to "start doing heroics as soon as possible" :)

I decided to just gear the tank and wait with the rets. The cost of getting all the epics for the tank was just 2,5k or so. Not a big issue.
I still have lots of cash on my chars and all quests in Sholozar Basin, Storm Peaks, Icecrown (I've done the rest) so hopefully I will be able to get the best of two worlds. But heroics is main priority.
Just a personal point of view :
I don't do dailies, ever.
I like to use flightmaster routes for long distances because I can do something else in the mean time. Epic flyer simply would save me a few seconds between the closest flying point and the entrance of the instance I'm going to : Not worth it.
My advice : gear your tank, buy casters mace for your shamans, power level enchanting on one of the characters, and go practice your heroics ASAP.
If you plan to run dailies for gold, then the epic flyers are probably a good idea.

Yeah enchanting is very high on my todo-list.. how long can I expect it will take to get from 1-350ish? which I guess is Northrend worthy.

Funnily enough after reading various threads I'm planning on powerlevelling enchanting.
If you have a decent chunk of gold you can get to Northrend levels quite quickly (presuming mats are freely availabe on your servers auction house).
I powerlevelled another character and was able to do a couple of hundred levels in a couple of hours just buying mats off the auction house. I got a load of the other levels the next night.
You need to get to 375 to be able to disenchant everything, but at least the 350- 375 is easer to do thanks to Northrend recipes.

What was your approximate cost to reach 350ish?

Neither the gear or epic mounts, do the money maker tradeskills first. If you don't care about minmaxing for arenas, you can go JC+alch on everyone and rake in about 2k a day profit basically doing 1 daily quest, 5 gem transmutes, and 5 icy prisms. And thats considering the cost of buying all source mats always, unless you enjoy daily quests tradeskill CDs are by far the efficient way to make money that I have found, especially if you only play for small ammounts of time per day but can log in for atleast 20-30 minutes a day

Just to point out again....
The question wasn't "how do I make money". The question was "how do I get into heroics as quickly as possible".
shaeman

Actually the question was - should he use money to gear up or buy his epic mounts instead.
He stated a preference for doing heroics therefore the suggestion was to do heroics.
So if you are going to point out what the original question was I suggest you get it right.
Presumably he would still like to gather money for the epic mounts - in which case suggestions towards that are perfectly acceptable too.
I'd suggest leaving the moderators to do the moderation - they do a much better job of it.

If you're looking to powerlevel your enchanting...
You can do massive AoE pulls in lower instances with all of your toons, the same as we do with a single toon during boosting.
Take the lead/main toon and set the loot to Master Looter.
Choose for this toon to "opt out of loot".
Set the threshold to green items.
Ignore loot on every other toon.
Anything that sparkles on a corpse on this Master Looter is something green or better for them to master loot.
You'll miss all the cloth, but won't have to loot every corpse.
And you won't miss any greens or better.

Upgraded a few items yesterday on the tank, still feels like I need tons of hp, but so far the stats looks promising.. unbuffed.. hp is at 23,2k
Armor: 21444
Defense: 536
Dodge: 17.31%
Parry: 16.78%
Block: 10.44%
Just need to respec a few bad talent choices, get new trinkets >_< and get the slaves weaponskill back to 400 (got them a Titansteel Destroyer each yesterday :).

Nah, Oltecs rocks.
There's plenty of gold making tip threads around. The OP just wanted to know if it was stupid to by gear before mounts.
ps-"leaving the moderators to do the moderation", lol wut?

Don't get me wrong - I like otlecs, I pretty much agree with his point of view on most things, It just seemed wrong to continually post the same respone when the thread had shifted towards enchanting/disenchatning, especially when it was Otlecs himself that first raised making money with enchanting/disenchanting.
"Once you're there, and assuming you have a (dis)enchanter, it won't take you long to earn the money back and deck your team out with epic flyers if that's what floats your boat. "
Anyhoo - I was probably a bit heavy handed in my post - What can I say, Sorry - I'm a miserable old sod sometimes.
I do kick myself when I make posts like this - and I will endeavour to stop myself in future.
Mebben - I'd say you are probably good to go on the easier heroics. Have you tried Utgarde Keep yet?

You stay out of this and mind your own business.
The Topic Creator should buy his epic mounts and then disenchant them to sell the mats to buy gear to run heroics.
