View Full Version : Video Mux?

I had this idée to put the picture from my 4 extra PC onto a single 24” screen. In order to do so I guess I need a video mux of some sort, that takes the feed from 4 sources and mux them together. Sort of advanced PiP using external mux.

Anyone seen anything like this anywhere?

I’ve seen the opposite… where u split the feed from one PC to multiple screens, where the hardware used just emulates a screen with combined resolution of the 2 screens connected…

But as of yet… I’m having somewhat trouble finding what I’m looking for...

Any ideas?

I don't know of anything out there that can take 4 inputs that isn't wtfexpensive. There are 30" ones that can take 2 inputs side by side but they cost $6000+ each. Search for 30" and Barco on these forums.

Dell's "picture by picture" isn't really, despite the name.

You have a TON of data going through there.... sure something could do it, but even getting fancy like transcoding 4 screens, then combining together in software is probably going to add more than 500 ms of latancy - not to mention require far more than gigabit networking. If you don't mind compression, have the CPU power and don't mind a bit of latancy, check out VLC. I have written about it here before as I use it to realtime "FRAPS" AND encode at the same time. So file sizes only run a few dozen megs per minute - perhaps 500 megs an hour? Instead of 500 megs a minute.

This will do it but looks like only 1024 X 768 on the main display. But you can probably google for something similar.
