What is a /click macro...

OK i'm not the brightest where macros are concerned i use castsequence and assist for most things and i'm happy with it, when i was two boxing. I'm now five boxing and see lots of reference to /click macros..

Perhaps i'm being a tad thick but what is it and how does it work?
