Need some advice, after getting to grips with boxing 4 x Fire mages, i have decided to roll the popular shaman combo.
I dont fancy rolling a tank class. So what do you think is best? 5 or 4 Shaman.

20 totems > 16 totems.

IMO this choice depends on what you want to do. Do you want to do some heroics or PvP? Seems to me from my small experience (and lots of reading here) that go for Paladin and 4x shaman for instances, and 5x shaman for full on facemelting. You really do need a true tank for some of those instances.

Someone here showed that 5 shaman can clear heroics, but that person is well geared(way above whats necessary to clear heroics.) So if its pvp roll 5 shaman, pve 4shaman and 1 tank of your choice.

Why are you giving up on your mages? Have you seen http://www.dual-boxing.com/showthread.php?t=23634 ?

Well.. when your team reaches 80, and is 5x Shaman's...
You will not be able to do heroics.
If you do a whole bunch of pvp.
Or a whole lot of heroics (say as a 1 box elemental) with a tank, healer and 2 other dps played by other people.
And over time really gear up, to the point where heroics don't upgrade you in any way.
And you do this with each of your toons.
You'll be able to 5-box heroics, with shammies.

Don't discount the ability of 2-3 earth elementals vs Boss in Heroics...I've had little trouble as 4 elemental 1 resto when boxing some of the easier heroics. All of them have the best "welfare" PvP gear and can nuke a boss down in about 30-40 seconds. If you can't clear the instance hit up a few of the earlier bosses in each of them until you can snag some of the better PvP/PvE gear with badges and it's game on again.
Often times they aren't the prettiest of wins but I do down DTK and Gundrak with relative ease now. Just make sure you drop elementals on 2 and stack up the healing totems to cover the splash damage, mana shouldn't be a problem in a 30 second fight. Also find out what kind of damage the bosses spit out, and use the often forgotten resistance totems, it can be a big help, 600dmg is a lot eaier to deal with than 1300-1500. Gundrak has a lot of nature damage and earth ele's are immune, so they make quite a nice tank. DTK is more or less just a bloodlust zerg/brute force type place for me and the trash takes about 10min to clear before the bosses meaning I just drop 5 earth on the first boss, 5 fire second boss rinse and repeat for the win. After a couple days doing just these 2 you should be able to pick up some decent gear and clear out some of the tougher ones.
If you want some almost free +sp spec totem of wrath on all the elementals and glyph it. Drop and recall the wraths for the 5min buff then drop your normal set with just 1 totem of wrath in the group and you get 84 more dmg for 1pt and a glyph.

If you can go with 4 or go with 5, and it doesn't matter...
I'd level 5.
You'll have the option for a full group of you.
Very good for battlegrounds especially.
You can always drop one, for a tank friend or arena healer friend.
You might decide to have a tank down the road.
That's up to you.
But leveling 5 isn't that much worse then leveling 4.

level 5 all the way. i would also suggest leveling a tank. For me 5 boxing allows me to do everything by myself. Having 4 and depending on another buddy to complete certain things defeats the purpose. Plus even if you do 5 you can always drop one for a buddy to play with you.
