View Full Version : Melee boxing heroics?

Most multiboxers play tank + 4 x caster teams (for very good reasons) but I decided to try a mixed team of 5 different classes and a couple of melee chars from the start, and now I am stuck with them.

I don't have any problem doing nice dps with my melee chars (it took a while to practice the rotations, but I've got a good hang of them now). The problem is when they have to move away from AoE attacks, like the whirlwind from the first boss in Nexus or the colossus boss in Gundrak. Then I have to get them in position again, and when I finally have got them there it is usually time to run away again. They can't deal any damage, the fight just goes on and on and it all usually ends up in a mess.

I would love to hear from the other melee boxers on this forum which heroics you have cleared and if you have any advices regarding tactics. So far I have cleared UK, CoS, DTK and Gundrak, even if the colossus boss gives me a lot of head ache every time I try him. Sometimes I skip the lich boss in DTK as well. I usually run in into UP, HoS and HoL too to kill the first bosses to get some emblems, but the third boss in UP, the event in HoS and the third boss in HoL seems impossible (I have only given them a couple of tries since I don't like wiping and paying repair bills :) It is so much easier to single-box them in PuGs instead.)

This is my team:
Protection paladin tank
Retribution paladin (or holy paladin)
Resto shaman (or elemental if the paladin heals)
Fire mage, feral druid, combat rogue and arms or fury warrior dps (any two of these to fill up the remaining dps spots)

How are you getting them into position? I personally have a seperate follow button that calls my enhancement shaman to follow me for when there's need for retreat {I may actually change this to have her /follow a ranged instead} and I can either use that to get her in range or just use the click-to-move/interact combination.

melee boxing heroic sounds about as much fun as herpes

I have one button that puts all melee chars on follow. I also have buttons to strafe melee chars left or right, casters left or right, and another set of buttons that moves melee chars up or down, and casters up or down.

I haven't tried to Click to Move/Interact with Target method (since I didn't know it existed) but I can try it and see how it works.

Herpes is actually pretty fun and challenging. Don't despise it until you have tried it.

Yeah, you'll want click-to-move/interact. Once you set it up, you just have your melee toons assist you, hit the interact button {I have 1 set up for all toons for quests/refacing in combat and one just for melee so the casters don't try to come running}. Your melee toons will then run up to the target on their own to start attacking. But I keep my melee-only follow button handy because sometimes they seem to think "interact" means "run by and whack the mob once before running off into the sunset".

What's the advantage with the Click to Move/Interact with Target method compared to a simple /follow + /startattack? They seem to accomplish the same thing. Larger range?

What is your team composition? I have 1 prot pally and 4 ret pallies and am loving it. I can clear UK and Nexus and then there are several other bosses I can down (still gearing up).

Avoid that boss (whirlwind guy) in Nexus. Actually, not sure if he is actually a boss but he mows my team down everytime so i go around him.

For some bosses who have front AOE I turn my rets around with their back facing the boss then taunt and bring boss in front of them with his back to them. If they get bounced I just /follow and run to reposition. The last boss in UK I use this and never have to move them at all. Just have to make sure they are just barely in range to hit him or they will get aoe'd.

CtM/Interact means you don't have to position your other toons or the mob beyond turning it around, they find the mob on their own. It also means they {usually} aren't sitting there spamming "out of range, too far away" if you haven't adjusted them {too close, too far away, facing the wrong way on autofollow}. It also makes interacting with friendly mobs easier.

Yes, mostly it's the hugely increased range, which is an absolute God-send when your guys get thrown or feared all over the place.

It also makes sure they turn and face the right way though, avoiding any positioning problems if they're a bit out of place.

OK! I will try this method when I come home. It seems to solve another problem I had had with /follow; that paladins and warriors with slow attacks sometimes just run through the mob and stops in front of it (usually perfectly timed for the first Smash from Ingvar the Plunderer to blow them away from the surface of the Earth).
