View Full Version : Thinking about moving to a PvE server

I know this has been mentioned before, but I can't help it:)

I'm seriously thinking of leaving Blackrock for a PvE server, perhaps one in the same battlegroup, since most of the Oceanic servers are to my liking. Late night player here.

Ganking(as in me doing it) is pretty boring, especially after 2-3 years playing this game. And if someone or some group tries to gank me, I end up with the feeling of being distracted or wasting my time, instead of feeling excited with the prospect of getting 5 whole honor. I mean, when I want to finish up quests, farm, or whatever in my limited time, I'd like to get something concrete done. Sure, I like to pvp, but don't you get the same honor in BG's/Arena regardless of server type?

When people talk about world pvp, I want to know where this happens besides the lame pvp objectives of standing at a flag/tower(c'mon, this theme has been played out for at least 15 years?), or some 70 ganking in a level 30 town. Ok, when it's time to raid, I guess you can call the battle in front of an instance entrance world pvp, but everyone that has raided understands it becomes more of an annoyance than fun in those situations.

I just like to quest in peace, do my instances, a little farming, and log off. Pvp too, but mainly when I want to. You might say my 5 boxing should deter the ganking type. Lol, not on my server. I get challengers every 5 minutes it seems. Most die, some groups of 3+ get me, but either way, it slows the other stuff I want done down to a crawl.

Maybe I'm getting too old for this game! I dunno.

I generally consider myself a Carebear. I like PVP sometimes, but not all the time. I have played on a PVP server to level 40, but quickly got tired of it. (not just the level 70s, but even the same level guys who'd try to attack me and always end up dying).

There's still some world PVP on PVE servers. A lot of times outside raid instances there will be one or two people flagged. So someone attacks him and that flags him and then half the people there flag and a small battle pops up. Nothing too long, but it can still be fun.

Personally, I'm going to go with my standard Do What You Think is Fun answer.

I've long had the yearning to do quite the opposite :)

I come from a pre-Trammel UO world (that will likely only have meaning to a small number of people here), where it was damned harsh and difficult to even survive let alone get much done alone.

From that, I played DAoC, AO, SWG, EVE and now WoW, and every time I've been given a choice, I choose a NON PvP server (or, more accurately, a "concensual PvP server").

Why? Because I don't like feeling like a victim nor do I get anything from making victims out of others, and although I do sometimes long for the ability to meet out player justice even that's not possible in any of today's games because 90% of the time it's players on my own faction I want to kill!!

However, WoW is basically a dull game, and I've often wondered if a PvP server would give me the unpredictable buzz I'm looking for, but I have a deep-seated suspicion that it will be just as you describe - a distraction and an irritation rather than a benefit.

So, having vented, I think you should just Do What You Think is Fun(tm) but remember that a PvP->PvE server transfer is one way - you can't transfer back - so consider rolling a new team on a PvE server rather than a transfer, in case it's a huge mistake.

My meandering thoughts about trying a PvP server will probably stay just that - meandering thoughts - because my raiding guild is on a PvE server, and that's where my heart will always be.

thanks for posting above...I need to come back to this post any time I think of leaving my priest and shammy behind and moving my 5boxing over to a PvP server. I am on PVE precisely for all of the reasons above. I do my best to go out of my way to find quicker/better ways to do everything, so I rolled on a PVE server after getting 2 toons to the mid 20s a few years ago on PvP and hated getting ganked by 10 year old roogs and 45 year old mages with nothing better to do than to put an embargo on my my lucrative earthroot supplies.

The earthroot trade is cutthroat. You are fortunate that you weren't corpse camped till shutdown, hacked, characters deleted, children abducted and had your identity replaced with that of Boris, the russian belly dancer with a weakness for midget prostitutes that smell slightly of vanilla.

On your next PvP excursion I suggest you try a more peaceful and sedate trade, for instances the thorium or adamantite mining industry. You will sleep better at night.

Well, I wont write long posts. For me PvP servers make farming much easier. Its like breath of fresh air... You farm something, then a guy comes, you fight and its doesnt matter who wins. Courage of fight between kinda boring farming... eh :)

I'm definitly a carebear as well. Played pvp servers from release until a couple months after BC released (when i rolled my paladin) and long story short, i am excellent at picking classes that when specced PvE get raped in pvp. Holy priest, combat sword rogue, frost mage (which at the time was pve spec lawl)

I knew paladins were, after relentless nerfage, better oriented towards pve so i said fck it and rolled on Ysera. I managed to get one of the supposedly slowest leveling classes (that was the thinking at the time, ret = win at leveling... yeah right...) all the way to 70 in the time it took my priest to 60, this was prior to the xp buff the old world quests received recently. All that and i never had to face the frustration of getting wtfpwnd by skull level allies at any point along the way. I'm pretty sure my deathcount while leveling (aside from instance wipes of course) was less than 10.

The only downside that i really see is farming nodes on PvE. You tend to get jacked if you aren't smart about things. that's pretty small compared to repeated corpse runs though if you ask me...

Best of luck to you.

I understand that not everyone's definition is the same, & respect however you want to play the game but I guess I will never really understand people who roll on a
pvp server, then complain about getting ganked.

Probably just like you will never understand the enjoyment I get in corpse camping some guy with my main for 2 hours, who happened to gank a friend, or an alt of mine.

Whose alt was probably ganked by your friend or by you at some point.

I really don't understand the enjoyment people get from griefing others. I am going to give up 2 hours of my time to just sit here and make your life miserable. Oh, what fun!

myself, im the opposite of most of these posts. I dont understand why people play on a pve server.

imagine running through Nagrand and coming across a Rich Adamantite node. now there is some alliance weakling sitting infront of it who had just killed 2-3 mobs around it and is now just resting to get health back before he/she mines it.

now you have two options. first you are on an pve server and curtious and let the weak little alliance person have the node.

here is the second option and my sole reason for being on a pvp server: kill the bastard, mine the node and than bow to them as they watch you pick up some blue gems that they ever so nicely prepared for you. :)

now my problem is that when a fellow horde is in that same position I still want to kill them. oh well, I guess I cant have it all :)

as for corpse camping and getting bugged while farming... meh... what goes around comes around :)

I have always played and leveled on PvP servers but I still think the PvP is pointless. Yea it can be really fun at times and then others you just don't care and would rather keep farming than have to kill some under geared noob who keeps attacking you. I generally don't attack people when I am doing other stuff because it takes extra time and gives no reward. The only advantage over a PvE server was that I could kill people who killed my shaman when I was leveling but that wouldn't have happened on a PvE server. If only there was a reason to actually PvP..
