View Full Version : How do you Name your characters?

I've finally finished setting up my PC and created my 5 accounts (busy holiday). I'm trying to come up with a naming system for my 1 druid, 4 shaman combo.
I've read Xzin's beginners FAQ and I'm thinking of distinguishing my characters by first letter (the rest of the name would be the same or different)
Example:
Main: Atari
Toon1: Btari
Toon2: Ctari
Toon4: Dtari
Toon5: Etari
Now does it really matter that the rest of the name is the same (tari)? I'd like to make distinct easy to remember names but I see many experienced multi-boxers make their names nearly identical. Is there a reason for this or just a preference? How do you name your characters and why?
Thanks in advance.

I think people do it to make it known their Multi Boxing.
My names are.
Firstrock
Secondrock
Thirdrock
Forthrock without the U.
I make it known.

The naming doesnt matter after first letter.
Personally I have named chars:
Azlatka
Bzlatka
Czlatka
Dzlatka
Ezlatka
It will help in pve to react fast enough to understand which toon is affected by one of boss' abilities and also the same names' lenght helps to react faster then it is my toon.

I wanted the names to sound more like real names, so I put the letter in the middle: Aeara, Aebra, Aecra, Aedra, Aeera.

I have 3 groups:
Wyvrn (paladin)
Wyvrnsheart (priest)
Wyvrnssting (mage)
Wyvrnsbite (mage)
Wyvrnsbreath (mage)
Bax (paladin)
Abax (priest)
Bbax (priest)
Cbax (priest)
Dbax (priest)
I have done both ways, and like both ways...
However I only do pve, and that might make a big difference.

I go for normal names for pve groups. For pvp groups I go for names that are the same length and start with the same letter and end with the same letter. It may not help that much but it doesn't hurt.
When I'm on a pvp group I get called a botter when I'm on a pve group I get called a powerleveller. Can't win name-wise :)

Naming your character is definitely hard and it matters most to yourself :)
I would say go with something original and try to throw a theme of some sort in there.
Personally my character names are variations of my wife's nickname.

new druid team is called
mooviee
moobiee
moofiee
mooniee
mooriee
ne btw not tauren :P
not as fun as shaman are but im going to give this a go.
I Went with
Jussa
Jusab
Jusac
jusad
Jusae
the main reason was My toons look exactly alike and in PvP this will make it alot harder to call a name over vent and then click target them.
Pick the undead priest named Jus..... Fuck they are all undead priests named Jusa. Get these Dot's off me.. gg i hate that guy
Remote

See signature.
One of my old characters is named "Remote"
Basically, I saw a TV remote on my desk and decided to name him that...
I am somewhat lacking in creativity on all counts, but I haven't seen anyone else do the 1, 2, 3, 4, 5 naming scheme.

3x boomkins (or cats), a tree, and a bear. What's not to love?
Only bummer is moonkin aura's don't stack. :(
at the moment they are only level 14 so i have them all wrath spamming, works really well, miss the shamans res tho, its back to corpse running for me if someone dies. i love stacking the hots its the only way they heal, but normally they kill everything before it reaches them, and makeing the most of the mistletoe 20 spirt buffs, hopefully ill grab a few more before they are removed.
im planning on sticking with balance spec for the time being, i will look into specing one to tank and heal alot later on, but instance grinding is whats killed my intrest in boxing with my other boxing set ups so going to concentrate on quests this time around.
anyway ill keep you guys posted let you know what its like its still early days yet im only level 14 but so far petty good, just missing the pretty totems and draenei tails, they are very hypnotic.

For whatever reason, I've always wanted a name that was simply my name, but Ryan is always taken. So I went and named my locks Ryanone, Ryantwo and Ryanthree. I find that this also helps tell people to whisper the main (Ryanone) most of the time. There are some that don't get it and still whisper Ryantwo or Three.
I ended up transfering my main 70 over to the same server, and renamed him Ryanoh, cause I thought Ryanzero sounded silly.

I try to name my guys something amusing or based on a theme. Some of the really good ones are usually taken but there's quite a few that work. ;)

Naming has always been somewhat of an inspiration thing for me.
Whatever takes my fancy when I'm creating the character. My 1st shaman was called Muramar, cos I liked the sound of it, it sounded kind of mean, and therefore by evolution, the rest of the team have ended up as follows:
Muramar
Murmarina
Murmarula
Murmalena
Murmanela
It just sort of felt right. My chars tend to be female, and I use latin type sounds.
Celestara - mage
Satanara - lock
Floriana - Drood
And bizarrely - Paleforth, cos it sounds like a monk's name for my male priest.
I spent an age thinking up my name for my Hunter, as I wanted something that matched with lots of pets. His original name was Rockie, with pets named Horror, Bulwinkle and Balboa. Sad... I know. Had to change it when I transferred server though, as Rockie was taken :S

zanthor

Zanthor... was the name of a D&D character I rolled up when I was about 9...
Aeacus (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Aeacus) & Letum (http://www.pantheon.org/articles/l/letum.html) came from when I rolled a PK/Rogue in UO named Aeacus Letum (Clicky for meanings) Coincidentally I felt guilty every time I PK'd so I flipped to a noto-killer and had hours upon hours of fun stealing from PK's, ganking them and selling their gear back to them... the best kill ever was when a guy tried to gank a naked me... I stole his arrows, so he put his sword on which left his bow in his backpack, so I stole his bow... and killed him with it.
Tiscanul was a conglomerate from my Sony Multiscan UL monitor... Coincidentally it is an anagram for Lunatics...
Leu Natic was a character I made in Asherons Call... later utilized as Natic, Leunatic, and many other variants.
Gnusmas is simply Samsung backwords...
Darke is an account I was given...
Aazan, Bazan & Cazan came from everyone calling me Zan, so I figured when I was making a bunch of new Zan's... Azan, Bzan and Czan seemed too meh, so I added a vowel to make them roll easier.
Zoroaster
12-28-2007, 03:35 AM
I already had my warrior and shaman at 70, so didn't really have the option of making all 5 similar.
For my 3 mages went with: Zorlei, Zormei, Zornei.
Add in war/sham and you get Zoroaster, Zotem, Zorlei, Zormei, Zornei.
I didn't want to go with the Abox, Bbox, etc pattern. So played around with what names were available and came up with the above, I like it.
Main: Tari
Toon1: Târi
Toon2: Täri
Toon4: Tàri
Toon5: Tári
Woah... that's full of all kinds of win. I never thought of doing that.
I am a pvper, so I had the same strategy as stated othere places in this thread. I want it to be hard to call out a target. So I used the same first and last letters, all the same length, and they seem to be pronounced the same way.
Thunduh
Thundah
Thnudah
Thundeh
Thundoh
But wow... using â, ä, à and á would be PERFECT. Because folks can't type those (typically) they'd never get tells. The only concern I'd have is giving your opponents the ability to say "Get the one without an accent over it!"
Go watch the video some arena team posted when they ran into Ellay. They include the vent chat. They eventually say "Which Shaman should we go for? lets kill uh... Aelli... the simplest of them... the A-e-l-l-i" (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pRwosHrsGNE)
This just proves the technique works. If Ellay had the habit of just rushing in, (which would be bad for shaman) they'd never get a target. :)
I plan to make a 5 hunter group next... I'll use the accent technique this time.
Boom

Of course a good team doesn't need to call a target, they all utilize a little thing called /assist :).
Slats
12-28-2007, 09:58 AM
Personally my character names are variations of my wife's nickname.
Now it REALLY bothers me you made female orcs. ;)
My 'real' nickname is Latency. Been Latency for years long before WoW. One time while raiding AQ40 one of my friends (probably was drunk) typo'd my name and instead of calling me 'Late' called me Slats.
When I moved servers and Latency wasn't availible and the top horde raiding guild was called <Latency> (and scored a massive amount of heat for being huge nerds) I went with Slats and just added w,x,y,z on the end.
One thing to note with names as somebody else pointed out kindly in another thread - if you create your FIRST character LAST, it will always appear first below the party leader on the 'mains' screen.
So make Slatsz, Slatsy, Slatsx then Slatsw.

Kekface-Burface
Kekface-Këkface <- If you have exactly the same gear and the same guild name it looks like your just 1 mage. Untill you start PoM-ming their asses ^^ Because on Kekface you just get a E-Umlaut instead of a normal e.
I was thinking about leveling 2 hunters too and had some great names for them.
5 minutes later: Hmm cant remember the names anymore :P

Alpha-, Beta-, Gamma-, Delta-, Omega-. Change the prefix as I go.
EDIT: Err, suffix.
Druid/Druid team was Pikapepa and Pepapika, when I xferred servers some jerks took my names and I had to change them.
Mage/Priest team was Punch / Puck / Puncho / Pucko / Pchunko
Pally/sham team is:
Junxo / Junxô / Junxó / Junxö / Junxò
I have gotten way less tells to alts on that team lol.
Monkofdoom

I've always gone with a varying theme on Monkofdoom, so far I've had characters under the names of :
Monkofdoom <-- Normally a hunter
Monkofboom <-- Normally a mage
Monkofzoom <-- Normally a rogue
Monkofsoom <-- varies
Monkofloom <-- Normally a druid
Monkoftoom <-- Normally a warlock
I have around 25 characters using these names + a few other characters so recently had to change my tatics for the Monk5
Mankovdoom
Menkovdoom
Minkovdoom
Monkovdoom
Munkovdoom
It works :)

Hehe, I've got a bit of a boring ones for now. Finnish words giving clearly what the characters do
Tankkaan = I tank
Parannan = I heal
Shokkaan = I shock
Jäädytän = I freeze
Vaivaan = I afflict
Guess the classes =) hint there are no warriors or priests in there...

For whatever reason I decided to give my 4 shamans distinct names:
Shocktrot
Toraxe
Uhealmeshock
Voltx
The only thing I see (in my mind) when I play with these shamans are the first latter of their name (S, T, U, V) and thats how I distinguish them. I have my screens setup in a clockwise manner from S to V so I know exactly where to look for each character.
After reading prior posts, I wish I had made their name a bit similar for PvP sake and making people aware I'm boxing. Probably something along the lines of:
Shocktrots
Shocktrott
Shocktrotu
Shocktrotv
It's a lot easier to say "target Toraxe" than it is target the one that ends in a t". Or ... maybe I'd go a different difficult to pronounce name with s,t,u,v as the 2nd or 3rd character. Though I would need to change some macros.
Meh they are only level 20 so I might just recreate the team. Have 5 days left on trial and 4 days till my WoW copies arrive.
Edit: Just a side note:
I've gotten a few comments in game (from a GM friend I know in guild and others) that Uhealmeshock is technically not allowed since it forms a phrase and that the word "trot" in shocktrot may be reported as offensive since trot in certain urban meanings means "shit" (among other things). I wasn't aware of the meaning (I was going for a foxtrot variant) at first but now I find it amusing ... I mean if I could name my character Shockshit in game I would just for kicks. Highly unlikely I'd get reported or that most people would even think of this meaning but just got me thinking. I LOL'd hard after I confirmed it at http://www.urbandictionary.com/define.php?term=trot

I would not recommend anyone using the extended ascii characters in your names if you play on a US server. It takes two seconds for anyone to report the naming violation and you are 100% guarenteed a forced name change. It doesn't matter if you have had the name since day 1 of WoWs release, you'll have to change it.

My main is "Velani". Random WoW name generator. Random WoW-generated appearance. I never intended for her to be my main, she was a "just-for-fun" alt that got out of control ;)
Anyway, I later leveled a pally up to 40 named Velath so that it would be similar to the shaman, but she was opposite in appearance (Velani was nearly albino, this one had the purple-black color).
When I rolled the 4 shaman, I decided to name them similarly: Velathi, Velatti, Velarie, Velavi. And peapod, my green-haired gnome warrior was ready and waiting at level 20ish.
Anyway, it turned out that I dropped Peapod the warrior at 45 to go with all v-names. Ironically enough, my 70 NE priest I started over a year ago is also a v-name: Vyndree
