There are a lot of probe scripts that hit this popular board type, fighting it can be rough however without adding captchas and other proof of life mechanisms. Its pretty easy to remove, when they slowly add users and plaster forums its quite annoying on my forums.

I had this issue on my boards, all I had to do was add a simple Q&A to the reg process and 99% of the spam stopped.

I did the same, for me, it stopped 100% of the spam.
