I put this in a thread in the newcommers forum a little while ago when I was trying to figure out what I'd like to do for a 5-man team. But in hind sight I should have posted it here. I think the current "EZ-mode" composition is still Paly/DK and 4x Shaman. But for anyone that wants to look at optimizing buffs - here you go.

So here they are again - I think this is the complete list of buffs that us caster types care about. The seperate groups of items should stack, but the individual items within each group do not.

280 Spell Power -> Elemental Shaman -> Totem of Wrath (Fire)
10% of Casters Spell Power -> Demo Warlock -> Demonic Pact
144 Spell Power -> All Shaman -> Flametonge Totem (Fire)

13% Spell Damage -> Affliction Warlock -> Curse of Elements
13% Spell Damage -> Balance Druid -> Earth and Moon
13% Spell Damage -> Unholy DK -> Ebon Plaguebringer

5% Haste -> All Shaman -> Wrath of Air Totem (Air)
3% Spell Haste -> Balance Druid -> Improved Moonkin Form
3% Haste -> Ret Paly -> Swift Retribution

5% Chance to be Crit (debuff on boss) -> Frost Mage -> Winters Chill
5% Chance to be Crit (debuff on boss) -> Fire Mage -> Improved Scorch
5% Chance to be Crit (debuff on boss) -> Destro Warlock -> Improved Shadow Bolt

5% Crit -> Elemental Shaman -> Elemental Oath
5% Crit -> Balance Druid -> Moonkin Aura

3% Hit -> Shadow Priest -> Misery
3% Hit -> Balance Druid -> Imp Faerie Fire

3% Damage -> Beast Mastery Hunter -> Ferocious Inspiration
3% Damage -> Ret Paly -> Sanctified Retribution

10% to all Stats -> All Paly -> Blessing of Kings

750 Armor, +37 all Stats +54 Resists -> All Druid -> Mark of the Wild

80 Spirit -> All Priest -> Divine Spirit
64 Spirit -> Warlock with Fel hunter -> Fel Intelligence

60 Intelligence -> All Mage -> Arcane Intellect
48 Intelligence -> Warlock with Fel hunter -> Fel Intelligence

91 MP5 -> All Paly -> Blessing of Wisdom
91 MP5 -> All Shaman -> Mana Spring Totem (Water)
109 MP5 -> Resto Shaman ->Improved Mana Spring Totel (Water)

30% Haste for 40 Seconds -> All Shaman -> Bloodlust

So, you can get the bulk of the buffs with 1 Elemental Shaman and 1 Balance Druid. For the most part Mages/Priests/Warlocks have redundant buffs - pick 2 and you cover most of it. Adding at least 1 Paly is recommended.

The bolded buffs are what you get with 1 Paly (tank), 1 Elemental Shaman, 1 Balance Druid, 1 Mage (Fire or Frost), and 1 Priest. That is probably the most optimal use of party buffs you can get in a 5-man team.

Blessing of Kings, Mark of the Wild, Divine Spirit, Arcane Intellect and Blessing of Wisdom can all be cast outside the party/raid if needed.

This is exactly what I was looking for!

I have a question too.
Do you feel that an elemental shaman would be better overall than a warlock all things considered?
I think dps is generally higher with the lock and the lock typically has a little extra versatility due to demons.
I wonder because I'm considering adding a shaman to my team and deciding what to remove if i do.
But I want it be an educated decision cuz I'd have to bring a shaman upfrom 1 to put it in there.
Thanks again for this and any others who may chime in on my question

Not sure I have a good answer for you - I've not done it myself. But theory crafting would tell us that if you are swapping a warlock for a shaman there a few pros and cons. Which ones outweight the others may be more personal preference than raw numbers though.

280 Spell Power -> Elemental Shaman -> Totem of Wrath (Fire) vs 10% of Casters Spell Power -> Demo Warlock -> Demonic Pact is probably about equal.

5% Haste -> All Shaman -> Wrath of Air Totem (Air) is a small improvment over 3% Spell Haste -> Balance Druid -> Improved Moonkin Form

You loose - 5% Chance to be Crit (debuff on boss) -> Destro Warlock -> Improved Shadow Bolt, but if you have a fire or frost mage then you're good.

5% Crit -> Elemental Shaman -> Elemental Oath doesn't help you because you already have 5% Crit -> Balance Druid -> Moonkin Aura

You can gain another source of 91 MP5 -> All Shaman -> Mana Spring Totem (Water) allowing your paly to use some other buffs (kings?)

The biggest pro for the shaman is probably 30% Haste for 40 Seconds -> All Shaman -> Bloodlust. Nothing else like it in the game.

If you already have some other clothies in your group, kicking out the warlock may free up some of the drops and now you'd get some use out of the spell mail that drops. But if you were mostly tailoring stuff for 3 clothies and now you loose one, you'd have to bring up a leather worker (spec'd for mail), or just shop the AH some more.

You may loose some of the versitility of the demons, but you gain another char that can off-heal when needed.

Overall, I think the individual DPS of the shaman and warlock are pretty similar, although it may be slightly ahead for a well played warlock. But shaman seem to be very multi-box friendly as far as casting rotations - so it may be pretty close or even slightly ahead for the shaman. The party buffs look a lot better for the Shaman and that'd be one less class of gear that you're sharding.

Overall - if you don't already have a shaman, I'd drop the lock and start getting friendly with totems.

The other thing to keep in mind is the use of a pet, soulstone, healthstone and summoning of players.

I love my shammie, but I'm not sure the totem farm would outweigh the benefits above if I had to pick. Pet is nice for the passive, meaningful damage. Stones are great. And while I don't use it all the time, having a mage/lock in my party means I can send any toon anywhere and call them right back to anywhere. :)

Also, a paladin specced Holy will likely have improved Blessing of Wisdom, and I believe its 102 MP5, which is nice, because it wont get overwritten by a manaspring totem.

I picked up this link from somewhere else in these forums:

Thanks everybody.
Much to think on.
If it weren't for the 1-72 trek I'd swap a shaman in there right now.
I think I'm gonna keep my lock in there for now and see how it goes

i am thinking of running a group like this:

tank: pally (aura, blessing, seal)
dps1: ele (hero, sp, crit, haste, other totems on top)
dps2: moonkin (mdw, hit debuff, spell crit, spell dmg %)
dps3: wl (crit debuff, replenishment, +hp or int through the pet, soulstone, healthstone)
heal: not sure

priest? provides sta buff and could be used as dd with only minimal equipment changes required
pally? more blessings, auras, seals - only downside: can not become a range dd
druid & shami - no additional buffs

what do you guys think?

I would go for priest definitely. Fear Ward, AOE healing and buffs the only downfall is survivavility.

I played Holy pally since day 1 and it's not that easy to heal a 5man team during AOE damage situation. You're only AOE is Beacon of Light and the Glyph of Holy Light(not that big actually). Flash of light has a HoT now when under Sacred Shield. Holy paladin is very effective in tank and off tank healing. Since you have a shaman/pally and lock, I think thats enough to substitute holy pally's improved blessing of wisdom

Druid has some good HoTs too and my guildmate always scored the highest Healing output in Recount. Plus Druid can be tank, long range and healer anytime. Revive is also a plus

Shaman is also decent healer plus additional stack totems and additional Self ressurect
