View Full Version : Picking tradeskills...

Kind of new at it, so I have 4 of 6 guys to pick one for then prioritze which gets done first.
I've already chosen:
SK= armorcrafting
Necro= Sage
Now I need to pick something for the Fury, Defiler, Coercer and Warlock
I'm thinking tailor (because of 3 cloth casters) and provisioner because everyone can use food and drink...leaving me 2 more spots. Jeweler maybe? (Anything worth while there?)
Now looking at what upgrades are costing for the SK abilities, I'm thinking I should do ALC as well, but idk if it's worth time investment atm.
Assuming tradeskill leveling is about as time consuming as adventure leveling, I have to pick one to do first and w/ all but 1 needing a sage, I m thinking sage is best to go first....them maybe tailor? Maybe alc for the SK abilities? Armor to gear up the tank for tanking?
With both Sage and Alc producing then I can use the RA to upgrade those to masters while I'm levelong the rest?
A few months to the next xpac, I feel I got alot to get caught up on....Anyone got some suggestions ho to prioritize?

I'll just throw some thoughts out there and let the community comment / pull-apart (remembering I don't like trade-skilling at all as I am from the sub-component era...):
If I were to tradeskill (never again!), I'd ask myself:
- What would I use the most, end-game
-- TBTH, all my teams go through heaps of 5hr+ drinks - spend about 1pp-2pp each time I drop by an AH - so a provisioner would be handy
-- I go through anywhere from 1pp-3pp of MC'd posions on each major run - so having a pocket posion maker would also be very handy
-- could you make money out of these two guys? Sure, always a market for food and poison
As for scroll makers:
- IMHO the only adp3s and better scrolls you need are end-game, therefore, would it be cheaper to buy the spells off the AH or spend all that coin/time skilling up your own scroll maker?
- could you make money selling to the market? Hell yes, BUT, I think you will find that the scroll market is well and truly tied up with a select few old-skool chars - do a search of a few high level scrolls and I am positive you will see the same names keep popping up at pretty competitive prices...
- also, the prices for rares are pretty high most times - this means you will have to spend a fair amount of time gathering them yourself which again leaves less time for dungeon runs
Would I use a WS or BS? No.
- quest and drop items are 'good enough' for most situations - assuming you aren't trying to farm epics
- if you adopt this approach, the only AC and weapons you will need are end-game and honestly - shard AC is the FOTM ATM
- as for weapons, start with simple / easy end game stuff and work your way up to better items
- both approaches will give you better items than PM MC'd items
- could you make money? Hmm...honestly, probably to the solo-player market, maybe even a small guild but most other ppl will go off and farm for better stuff themselves
You will go through a lot of regs so may be an idea to skill up a bard for the run speed at early levels - then buy something faster for later levels

Noxxy has good thoughts,
Im running 3 chars. I did bs / ws just for fun on my pally / zerker... when I added my third I decided to make a provisioner, not even to make my own food (but i will do that) but because the market for selling food harvestables is terrible (even worse than other stuff) so... I wanted an easy way to burn those. (I like to harvest =P)

I have an 80 prov and find her VERY useful. You won't ever make much profit on the broker but you will be well supplied. It's certainly nice having 2 redwood crates full of 5 hour food and drink for every level- searching and buying food takes a long time.
For the scrollmakers- I find it is hard to keep up your TS level to your character level- especially if you are using the RAF for 3x xp. Keep in mind that if you don't keep your scrollmaker at or above your current level they are pretty much useless to you, unless you are planning to level them hardcore once the toon makes 80 so you can create a set of expert spells.
By any chance did you multibox in EQOA? I recognize your name but it's a big world...

Yeah I did, on DH server. Quad boxed 2 necros (one named Velassra), hydromancer and a resist cleric.

It sounds like mostly overall, TS isnt really worth the effort, other than maybe for food?
I was mostly thinking to level the Sage when everyone got to 70+ here and there otherwise. (Ive heard people say sage was also the easiest to level and 5 of my 6 get spells from the sage.)
It sounds like the armor and tailor is a waste of time, even w/ the shard discount for making my own? Too much time/effort to level vs just accumulating the difference in shards.
I guess I'll do them just for doing them, but I guess not really worry about them.

Hey Jessicamonster/Cela, saw your last post didn't make it over on the transfer.

I'm on unrest but I was considering trying out a duo on AB for the RP/easy grouping.

I'm not 80 yet so I can't really say much about groups at max level, but there's been plenty through at least DFC if I wanted them. I don't really have anything negative to say about AB; I like it here.
