View Full Version : Hmm, naming thoughts on a pvp server

I have always gone with similar names and appearances to kind of get the zebra affect on a PvP server. However, I have been leveling my characters in same named groups as well as same named classes. It just occurred to me that when I branch off into an actual mix-n-match group this will no longer be viable. Kinda makes me laugh and wonder what I should do now, hehe. I guess in the end its not really all that big of an advantage, and there is no way to have an all same race group all the time (druids can only be tauren which cant be paladins, etc). So I dunno.
To others who play on a PvP server, any thoughts? Should I just keep leveling or should I consider making the heroic running group I want and have fun writing macros for a week or three for em :)

I think naming them all the same is only really worthwhile for groups which are all the same race and class. Its also only majorly useful in arenas in my opinion, where it is designed to make it harder for the opponents to pick the right person to focus fire. If you actually plan on doing arena with a mixed group though, its easy for the opponent to just say 'focus the druid'.

Yeah I figured it not really worth worrying about. Thanks:)

it doesnt serve much of a point, but not naming them the same makes them look sloppy, i would think of a clever name and call them all that.

Well if ya take a look at my sig ya will see the names I have so far, well some of em atleast. In the end the mixed group will just come from these same classed groups.

Just pray you never have any in-game friends you want to do stuff with.
I can just barely get the alt-131 down for a couple of my guildie's mains. If you ever wanted me to invite you to raids with those names it would take me 30 minutes just to figure out how to type them out.
I can just see it now...
"Hey, I've got a friend who wants to bring a lock to our Naxx25 run!"
Raid Leader: "Cool, that's exactly what we need to complete the group! What's his name?"
"Um... nevermind, forget I said anything."

Ahh, but see I know ways around that
You can just /who The Pack and get my name
Or I can /send Mercurio Invite Please
and then you can /invite {shift-Click my name from the whipser}
Screw typing it out!! :)

I'd be more concerned about keeping tabs on my OWN guys. I named all my druids basically the same, but then realized that now looking at my group, I'm not sure who is taking the damage and who should get healed/what macro to push sometimes. I basically had to use a UI to make sure that the names are always displayed in the same order so I know what is happening to whom, and how to respond.

I have a pretty long post in the macro/addon section about getting a layout that lets me better keep tabs on things. Name will never be as helpful as a nice big green bar that suddenly isnt nice and big :)

As you can see in my sig, my are all named similar. But on my server (PvP-RP), my leader (the priest) is usually killed first when I'm running around. Probably because the other two are following and the names give it away that I'm boxing.
Would it just be better to change the names so they're not so similiar? I have a hard enough time doing PvP with one char, let alone boxing it so I don't plan on doing much there. Mostly just questing and getting into dungeons/raids at end-game.

My groups are all the same class, and I can skip to any of them when they target one or the other. In general only people Much higher in level than me attack me. Right now I am playing 5 warlocks. Ive even killed a few skulls just with laying on the dots and getting em to chase me then my pets smashing on em. There really isnt anything that is going to get you free and clear in PvP and being 2 mages and a priest you can almost be guaranteed the priest is going to die first no matter what, hehe. I do not overland PvP much but I will be looking forward to melting a few towns from time to time. I dont BG pvp much either for that matter, and Ive never arena'd. I enjoy the extra challenge of playing on a PvP server is all. Where all the baddies arent so easy to predict what they are going to do :)

I initially named my guys the same but ended up renaming the 4 clones to all have independent names. I initially did it for BGs (it helped immensely with harassment), but it has also helped while lvling them from 70-80 as unless people know me they have to actually see me to know that I box. I don't hide that I box, but sometimes I just want to play in peace.
