View Full Version : When can 5 shamans do equal level instances?

In your guys experience, what level (and instance) did you first accomplish this? I ran my 5 shamans into Deadmines at lvl 20 and got rocked by the first pull that involved 2 elites + non elites. Just seemed like I couldn't heal through it while doing DPS. Maybe I just dont have the right targeting scheme for healing.

Did you use stoneclaw totems?

Well your focus fire should be high enough to kill one target, before they both get to you.
Not sure what level CL is at but, Stoneclaw totem, if you drop 2 or 3 at a time, not all 5 because it's pretty useless to have too many because they will despawn before they even die. Drop them and move away at range if you dont think you can take the hits, or you can stay close, at least that totem will ensure you arent losing casting time for at least the first LB followed by a Shock, should kill any target of that level.

I'm currently powerleveling my 5 shamans with a lvl 70 mage. As soon as they are all 40 I figure I will try them out on thier own as they will have Chain Lightning and the ability to wear chainmail. I think by then they should be able to dish out the damage as well as take it.

Well, I dont remember what level I was in the previous instances I have run - and I probably was higher than I had to be. However, I did SM Graveyard today with no problems with my team being 30, 30, 30, 29, and 28.
I did WC at around 20 and that went just fine. It can get challenging but certainly doable. As I have leveled I have gotten more and more fun toys and it seems easier to do equal level instances (so far)

I did RFC at 14-16, WC 20-22, SFK 23-25, BFD 25-26. Perhaps a level or two above "even level" (can't check exactly atm) but definitely within range of the instance. Both WC and SFK I did go longer than was necessary probably (at 24 and 26 the instance was basically a sprint) simply because the loot is pretty good.
My plan is to do RFK at 26-whenever then probably SM.
RFC was pretty nice to learn on because it is low level and I could work out a lot of bugs. One thing I learned is totems are even more powerful than I expected. I generally only use them on bosses, but I do on harder pulls if needed and they trivialize pretty much everything.
I drop 3-4 stones, 0-1 tremor, 1 earthbind in a cast and 5 searing or 5 magma in a cast and 1 mana and 4 healing (or before 26 5 healing) which increases my dps significantly and pretty much eliminates the need for _any_ outside healing.
Basically it is always a consideration of difficulty vs speed, the more totems the slower it goes but the more powerful I become.
Oh yeah, the one set of key macros that allow me to not only take on even level elites but to recover from Adds or bad pulls are my ctrl1 through ctrl5. These cast lesser healing wave from all my shaman to one of my 5 characters, generally the one acting as a tank. With this my shaman tanked the even level tree boss of WC with ease. When doing this the aggro will probably switch, so just see who is being attacked. You don't have to wait for all of the shaman to be ready to cast the spell as you only really need 2-3 non-crits to fully replenish the life. So I just spam the key a fraction of a second till I see the green glow which indicates at least one of my shaman has gotten the heal spell casting.

When I was levelling my shammies I must admit they were pretty useless until level 20. Once they got the healing totems and lesser healing wave they totally transformed into madmen and could do any equal level instances in Azeroth (Outlands instances can be different in places like the last boss in Ramparts etc).
My general tactic is similar to Nepdia (but I use 5 healing totems and a slightly different totem setup) and just nuke like crazy on a single target and heal with all shammies using lesser healing wave on a single shammy. The initial target should be dead before it reaches you but you have to be quick with the lesser healing if one shammie has all the aggro. Once the mobs reach you make sure you prioritise healing over dps and you should be fine. All my shammies are 41/0/20 for PVE and 40/0/21 if I go to BG. Only problem I found in the early levels was Mana but this gets better as you hit late 40s.

Wow, maybe I'll resist the urge to level my 4 shammies. On my 4 hunters I'm looking for instances that are 2 levels higher than me for a challenge.....

I cleared Deadmines at 20. If you're having trouble, kite.

I stand in awe at anyone who 5 boxes instances with a homogenous group (except Druids!).
My main focus is PvE. I've tried 5x various classes, and ultimately either gave up completely or swapped a dedicated tank + healer in when required.
My own shammy experiment turned into an exercise in frustration, so my "5 shammy team" is now a "3 shammy team with 2 druids" and it's ALOT more fun for me, personally, especially with my wife playing the Resto druid, and especially since neither of us has ever played a druid before :)
Three elemental shammies + boomkin tank(!) + healing tank(!) = lots of damage + healing = joy. If I ever want a true five shammy team then I'll roll another two as part of a new levelling team, and plug them together for PvP at level 70.
Good luck with your five though. I'm always interested to see how people deal with situations I gave up on.

Otlecs, thats kinda my plan in reverse. I'm going to level my 5man sham to 70, but I also have a 70 healing priest and tankadin I can put into the mix (just would require one char transfer) to make a more rounded 5 man if needed for heroics. When and if I get that far :D

At 33 I can clear everything up to SM:Lib. and the only problem I have in there is the houndmaster, but I've only tried him once so I'm sure I could do it if I reevaluated the situation.
I cleared SM:GY at 28 and everything before that I did once I was able to accept all of the instance quests so most of the mobs were green to me by then.
I just started my 5 shammy group and have done the following
Deadmines @ 20/21 (must have healing stream totem)
Stockades @23
SFK @ 23/24
RFK @ 24
I'm running 4 elemental and 1 resto shammy who actually "tanks" for me. One thing that helped a TON was to go drop ~40g at the AH and get some reasonable gear for them. I increased mana 40% on the elementals and stam by about 25% on the resto.
My rythm usually is just this
Lightning Shield x5
Healing Stream Totems x5
Searing Totems x5
Pull with resto shammy using a shock (frost is nice)
When in range then Lightning Bolt x4, start hitting with Resto
If multiples come then I'll drop Stoneclaw Totem x5, these will get non focused mob attention and has 50% chance to stun.
Rinse and repeat Lightning Bolt as necessary with occaisional Shock x5
If Resto starts taking more dmg than healing totems can keep up with then self heal but keep the elementals killing.
I'm sure down the road I'll need to work some more ellegance into this, but hey, only been at it a few days.

How exactly do you "kite" with 5x Shaman? (or 4x..3x..2x...). As a former hunter, the kiting principle is simple enough (slow enemy, run, jumpshot, wash, rinse, repeat....). With a single Shaman, I can frostshock kite alright, but what do you do with the other 4? Earthbind totems and fire totems? Seems like it would take an awefully long time.
I should probably make a video of it. It requires perfect execution, but is very possible. Aebox's video will give you a general idea...but he isn't very good at it(at least not in the video): http://youtube.com/watch?v=cVOlj4Th2-w&feature=user
Basically, drop an earthbind; cast lightningbolt and chain lightning back to back; run away and drop 5 nova totems; when you've got some distance cast a chain and drop more totems; continue to drop 1 or 2 earthbinds as your run backwards and stop to cast chain lightning.

that particular video isnt a great example of it, his first 2 SP heroics he does a much better job at it. hunter kitingx5 is quite similar in theory to that, just got to keep into account fewer ways to slow the mobs (trap+cuncussive Vs 2 totems and frost shock) and if they get in melee range you have a problem.

Well, in Heroic Blood furnace I kite all the two-pulls(they hit really hard). For the first pull I just kill one, and then run out of the instance. Then I zone back in and kill the other. After that I have plenty of room.
Up to Uldaman I cleared every instance with my 5 shammys being 2 lvl below the highest lvl boss in each instance. The only exception to this was the last boss in Uldaman that gave me some hazel with all the adds…
None of the times I did any kiting… Healing stream, Stoneclaw, Fire Nova helped a lot though. Oh and I did this as enh, not elemental. Lover lvl gear tend to be good for str, agi and sta. Not so much for int and + spell dmg.
I now replaced 1 shaman with a 70 shaman I had since before. And my former boxing main is now exploring the lifestyle of twinks in the 40-49 bracket.
At 50 something I respect elem. But cant say much about how instances would go done using all same lvl, since I now “tank” with my lvl 70 shaman.
