Okay so i know this question might have been asked times before but ive had a little search of the forums but time is running out. ive just bought a quad core 2.66 ghz processor and 8gb of ram with a Asus P5QL Pro Board and a 1gb gfx card.. my question is ive just installed windows 7rc 32 bit and im only able to use 3.5gb of ram ( here comes the instagib flame abuse drum roll ). does this mean i have to download and install the 64bit version of the rc to enable to maximum 8gb.. sorry for the stupid question ive been using 32 bit systems for years and never even looked into a 64 bit Os... :(

Please dont flame becasue your just wasting your time. any anwser would be great help. Just a simple yes or no would be great its far easier than RTFM NOOB.. or GTFO ( less letters = simple anwser = happy place )

howdy Jimb086 (love the avatar)

if you want to have more then 4G of system memory available, you must have a 64 bit OS (i'm not going to address the tweaks they made to 32bit stuff to make it work above 4G). the main reason is that 32 bits == 2 ^ 32 == ~4G addressable memory. to address more, you need more bits... so, 64 bit (loads and loads of addressable memory)

at this point, all indications are that windows7 performs much better then vista. (my guess would be that it's a result of removing the winsxs subsystem)

hope that helps,

Rob

Windows 7 > Vista without a doubt. The only hitch I've run into was the Keyclone installation (my fault, not the software's) regarding Administrative Rights. Check my previous posts if you have any trouble with it. After wearing on Rob's/Keyclone's seemingly infinite patience one morning, I was finally able to get to the root of the problem and get it working properly.

i've been trying to download the latest RC from the microsoft site for a few days... and it's getting very annoying. everytime i pull it down, about 6 times so far, the download manager complains it has been 'corrupted'.

why microsoft doesn't also offer all their downloads on a torrent is beyond me. worst case, it would download all from the one host like it tries to do now. best case, it pulls much faster as so many people are trying to pull a file... with the added bonus of not being corrupted (grrr)

another thing they could do, which would be minimal, is post the md5s of all their downloads on their site right next to the download links (can't trust an md5 from anywhere else). this would at least let me try to pull a torrent i might find 'in the wild', then compare the md5s

EvoX Yeah thats a right pain in the Ass.. clearly having an admin account in windows means nothing anymore its just eye candy..

I Was kinda lucky i havent had any issues downloading the Rc's but im using the Europe ones dont know if they would have less issus with d/l's.. but i do agree why cant they release a torrent for the Rc's... and im sure M/s have enough cash to dedicate a high speed server just for Rc's so that they dont get issues..

win7 taskbar sucks. checkbox for "keep the taskbar on top of other windows" (which I normally uncheck) is GONE. So you are stuck with autohide which is annoying and doesn't hide completely.

win7, i7 950, 9 gigs ddr3, gtx285 1 gig and with 5 toons dalaran is still barely useable. what is the bottleneck? has to be disk I/O or possibly network at this point.

whoa.
I changed processAffinityMask from 3 to 255. now 40fps in dalaran and millions of fps everywhere else.

yay!

I find that if I pip swap a couple of times the taskbar hides.

Windows 7, i7 920, 6GB DDR3, GTX285 and 5 chars in Dalaran is completely usable for me. That's with my main window fullscreen on a 1920x1200 display and the other four windows taking up a quarter each of a second 1920x1200 display. The non-foreground windows are capped at 20fps.

I suspect something is not quite right with your setup. Have you set your processorAffinity correctly? I forgot to do so when I recreated my multiboxing setup on my new i7 machine, resulting in all five instances of WoW hammering the first two cores. Dalaran was definitely unplayable then. 'SET processorAffinity 255' in my config.wtf fixed it.

EDIT: I just noticed you posted again saying you had already fixed it.

Jimb086,

Yes, you need a 64-bit OS to address the 8GB of ram within your machine -- 32 bit simply cannot do so. If you plan to download Windows 7 RC 64-bit, please be sure to do so before August 15th as it will no longer be available after that date. For further support, Microsoft does have an official Windows 7 RC Support Forum located here http://tinyurl.com/9fhdl5 . It is supported by product specialists as well as engineers and support teams.
