View Full Version : new gear, great fps, no lag; but graphic bugs/artefact (hw problems?)

Hi all,

I finally got my new gear (i7, 9gb ram, nvidia gtx 260) and it's great fps wise and no lag or problems in dal, etc...

*BUT* I have weird artefacts sometimes when in dal for instance and elsewhere : big patches of grey or other wrong color on the screen

I'm guessing maybe it's when my card runs out of texture memory, but it has 896 MB of ram so that seems somewhat unlikely; I'm worried it's some HW problem - I found a GPU memory tester (using CUDA) and that didn't find any issue - anyone seen this before and has some idea for a solution ?
(the hw is new but I'd hate to return it)

Btw, that's with windows 7 - with vista 64 I get wow errors 232 after typing my password !

I did run memory tests for regular memory and prime95 tests for cpu/cache/...cooling and those passed...

You can see a sample of the glitch on my justin tv stream clips :

I do believe I've dealt with this before.

Turn shadow detail all the way down on all your clients.

I had the same problem when I got my new machine same MB and video card. Problem solved when I turned down shadow detail as above poster stated.

i have this little trouble too with my msi 285 1 Go
i change my fasion and i find solutions ...
Before i launch clone1, clone2,clone3,clone4 and the main
if i launch the main first, it s better

the other way is the resizing of the main windows screen, if you move a little, you ll see that at one point, the screen ll stop the artefact.

with these 2 solutions, it s good now on my computer

ok, lowering my shadow details on my main (was already min on my slaves) worked - but my crappy laptop video card didn't have that problem... well at least now I know it's not my hardware (that or all nvidia 2xx are bad?)

thanks a lot for the workaround !

Those video glitches can occur if your video card is getting too hot. I had the same thing happen to me when I would BG or go into Dalaran because it has to work harder in those areas. Turning down shadow quality may fix it because shadows are a big usage of the card's power. I fixed my problem by buying a fan that goes into a free slot right next to the video card and blows right on it. I've haven't had any problems since.

Here's an example of the type of fan I used. They are very cheap, like $10-$20.

Ok, so anyone has an nvidia 260 and can run 5 in dalaran with shadow details to middle on the main ?

(Smooth what graphic card do you have ? - my pc is new (and pre built so I would expect they tested air flow) and while the card does look warm/hot to touch it seems somewhat ventilated ok ... but maybe it isn't - I'll try to find a GPU temperature meter - is there such thing for nvidia cards ?)

I was having the shadow problem while running two clients on a 9600GT.

Re: GPU temps, I *think* RivaTuner and EVGA precision can read GPU temperatures.

The small GPU-Z can show frequency and gpu temp, GC ram card temp and speed fan too

Had the same Problems when I updated the Nividia Drivers from 182.50 to 185.50 and also the newer Versions, after changing back to 182.50 the Artefacts where gone.

I use a Sapphire 4850x2 2gb card. I run ten accounts on it but most of my heat issues come from the fact that my room gets above 90 degrees every afternoon and sometimes over 100. It's been getting up to around 110 outside here and my ac can only handle so much. All the electronics really heat the place up.

I'm not saying heat is your problem but it's just something to think about or look into. It seems to me that alot of these type of threads pop up in the summer time. One of my friends keeps his computer running by putting 2 ice cold beers into the case every two hours or so. Ice packs would probably be a little less ghetto but you have to work with what you have.
