Update:

The plan is to take these forums offline around 9am CST Saturday, August 1st. I'm estimating we'll be back up and running by 3pm CST (GMT -6).

If you are able to get to the site there is NO guarantee anything you do will be saved / still there. So please refrain from trying to do anything really important before 3pm, or before I give the "all clear lets see what we can break".

After a lot of breaking things and fixing things we're nearing a forum conversion to VBulletin. What does this mean to you? Well, if you've written a guide or tutorial, you're post is going to be mangled to hell once we change over to VB. It will need to be reformatted. There will be a LOT of forum posts that will need to be reformatted. Anything that you want to keep a copy of from these forums, I suggest you get it before July 31st. This version of the forums will not be publicly available after July 31st.

Things you want to do before July 31st:
Save your avatar Save your signature Mock Fenril and / or Gurb
Save any images you have in the gallery Make sure you're email is current and you have access to it Save any posts you would like to repost or any content you want savedThe most important step, if you don't care about anything other than being able to log in, is your email. You will be required to do a password reset in order to log in to the new site. This requires the site sending an email to your email address with instructions on how to reset your password. If you do not get this email, you will not be able to reset your password. Also make sure any mail from *@dual-boxing.com is not being filtered into your spam folders.

Any posts made on July 31st or August 1 may disappear. So please keep a copy of anything new you post just in case we need to do a roll back. Plan on d-b being down a full day, it may not take that long, it may, so we're going to black out the site while we do the migration. I'm not anticipating anything I haven't already seen in the 4 test conversions I've done already, but you never know. Once we're back up and running I'll post an all clear message and we'll open the flood gates.

There will be problems. Burning board to Vbulletin is not an ideal conversion, there are a lot of differences a that are not easily handled. So if you have something break on you, please let us know how to recreate it exactly so we can fix it. I'll create a temporary section just for bug reports and such. If you have ANY questions, now is the time to ask. Please keep all discussion about the migration here so everyone has easy access to the same info.

Thanks for the notice, I'll be sure to go through and backup any posts I'll need to resubmit.

Why is d-b converting to vbulletin? And will there be a search box so i don't have to fix my signature? :)

This current software has an abundance of errors associated with it and it consumes a lot more resources than it should.

Well, if you've written a guide or tutorial, you're post is going to be mangled to hell once we change over to VB. It will need to be reformatted.I don't know the logistics involved; but I would hope it would be possible to write a (php or sed/awk or whatever) script to migrate the existing formatting of these posts to the formatting used by VB.

Can I help? I'm willing to give writing said script a go.

*Edit: sweet post #666 :D

Any chance you could just export the current posts to be available to access as read only once you change over? There is a lot of great info on here that is likely going to be lost =(

yea, I am really worried about losing posts/threads which contain such valuable information.

I presume the wiki will be unaffected? Or should we back those up too?

No threads are "lost". They just may need some reformatting. But we're definitely not dumping information.

Ya this process has been long overdue, the forums have been migrated over to VB multiple times and I've tested it in the past, no information is lost - just have to work out some other kinks in the process. I'll PM you as well Jafula.

But...Gurb knows where I live! I can't mock him! He'll kill me!

Wait... maybe not!

Gurb is a tool anyways :)

Shame though, although i had my doubts about this forum software, kinda grew familiar (accustomed?) to it, what was the software you used before that ellay, was it phpbb?

Ellay

I used to use phpbb2.

To give a comparision when I first made the site it was on some crappy hosting that was $4.99 a month, woohoo! and the site at one point has 2100+ users on at the same time and it didn't crash, it was deadly slow but still stayed up.
With this software I had to migrate over to VPS and then eventually a dedicated server, as soon as 400+ users are on now it slows to a dead halt and sometimes crashes for $500+ every 3 months. It's time for a much needed change :(

I like vB3, it's pretty customizable and has lots of mods written for it. Since it can support both HTML and BBCode in posts, hopefully the transfer won't be too hard on people's posts. I'm suddenly glad that my posts are so bland, though. :p

I've got an uncle that has his own business dealing with renting out servers to major companies. He's got a shit load set up based out of Houston, Tx here in the US. He also builds websites for a living as well. I'll see if he's got a site with prices and everything if ya'll are interested in looking around for new or backup sources. Not sure what he charges on all of them though. But I know they're reliable. One piece of advice though. We ran into this problem this week, can you add a 'Report User' to everyone's profiles? We had someone fishing profiles and spamming everyone's emails till they were banned. Couldn't report them cause they weren't posting on the threads. Its only a matter of time before this'll happen again.

We know all about the PM spam, threads pop up when it happens, I also get emails when I get PM'd on my phone, so I'm usually quick to answer.

Is there any chance of a few more categories or subcategories being added to the existing once the VB switch happens?

Svpernova09

Is there any chance of a few more categories or subcategories being added to the existing once the VB switch happens?More categories or subcategories is an often debated topic among the mods, what specifically did you have in mind? (yes there are some changes coming specifically with the guild section that will happen shortly after the VB transition)

(yes there are some changes coming specifically with the guild section that will happen shortly after the VB transition)I think it would be worth a discussion on having subforums for the main software choices; Keyclone, ISBoxer, HKN (perhaps authors choice of course) and any others that warrant their own section. Having the info for new and old boxers in one spot for their particular software choice would be handy.

Perhaps having specific Software Boxing and Hardware Boxing sections.

Just some thoughts to consider. :D

does this have anything to do with why the forums are suuuuuuuper slow during the day to the point of often timing out, but then being just normal in the evening. its been happening for the past few days im wondering if anyone else is noticing it. slow time is roughly 10am - 5pm est.

My primary thought when I asked was a seperation of Macros & Addons into their own groups or subgroups. I'd also 2nd the thought Vecter posted regarding keeping information about Software solutions in their own respective categories. Thirdly, how about the possibility of a Category specifically for Levelling method discussion?

The current forum has it's way with MySQL in numerous positions with numerous objects throughout the day, so far it gives up and lets MySQL sleep at night though.

Unstickied so it gets thrown into the normal rotation and hopefully, more visible. I'm going to bump this pretty often.

Things you want to do before July 31st:
Save your avatar Save your signature Save any images you have in the gallery Make sure you're email is current and you have access to it Save any posts you would like to repost or any content you want saved
The current plan is Saturday morning the site is going to go down. So anything posted AFTER 7am to THIS site, may not make it into the transfer. I've got my database exports and scripts all set to run ~7:00 am CST Saturday.

This version of the site will NOT be publicly available. We will NOT be able to get any of your images / posts if they don't make it through the migration. See above for what you need to back up to be safe.

If you have any questions you can find me in IRC.

Just under 2 hours to go now, right? It's 7:22am CST GMT -6. I just got up (sleeping in is good) I'm about to whip up an index with a mibbit IRC embed to our #dual-boxing channel, and then I'm going to hide the forums and start the migration.

now where did I put that mt dew.
