Hi,

I've tried searching for this, but eerything is either outdated or regarding instances. I currently have 2 accounts. Each has an 80 main on them with some level 60 somethings that I've started slowly levelling (mostly solo). The current one I'm levelling is a 65 frost mage. I'm getting fed up of having to take breaks all the time to drink....and I also want to level up a bit quicker too so I can try dualboxing that with my 80 lock. So I was wondering how efficient it would be to have the warlock help powerlevel the mage through quests?

The mage would be the leader of the group so I'll be able to loot, use items, etc. My thoughts were tag a mob by casting frostbolt on mage and shadow boltimmolate (or immolate or incinerate) on lock at same time. At which point the felguard (defensive) will run in and finish the mob off. When I get to slightly harder mobs, I'll cast more of the frost and shadow bolt macros. obviously I'll nerf some of the XP...but I'm hoping that the quicker completion of quests and heirloom shoulders will help offset that somewhat.

Any thoughts on this?

not exactly sure what your question is, but yes - this will work. If you are quest boosting, the idea is to kill the required # of mobs asap to complete the quest - you're not concerned about xp from the mobs. At lvl 71 or so, i would ungroup the lock as you can tag boost and get full xp on your mage for mob kills.

With the changes that have been made to pre-70 experience, questing is a viable way to boost. I doubt that it is faster than instance boosting, but since quest experience rewards are so large it doesn't matter how much experience you gain from mobs. So if you can have a level 80 help kill stuff quickly, you are getting experience at a very good pace. You're also getting a lot of gold as well.

USE LOCK PET!!!

If Im correct pets do not take any of the XP if they help kill. so have mage solo, tag mob, then stick locks pet on mob. guess imp or felguard would be best. the mob will die damn quick, the mage will get for XP and credit for the kill.

I tried this out last night. The kill XP is reduced by roughly 80%. That is a fairly big hit, but stuff is going down much quicker. The mage and lock do a shadow/frost bolt at the same time (frost bolt has a slightly quicker cast time) and when the shadow bolt lands, the felguard charges and pretty much only needs one more hit from him to down the mobs...well, the ones I'm currently fighting anyway.

Does this work? I thought that when this was done the XP gain was based on the amount of damage that was done?

quest boosting is not about XP per mob it is about XP per quest. I have been boosting my wife's priest through outlands this week. She gets bored with instance boosing so I try to mix it up and do a combo of questing and instancing. To make questing competitive with instancing you really need to have good "quest grouping". Multiple quests in one area. You need to go out from base, do 5+ quests and then go turn in. The Nessingwary series in Nagrand combined with a couple of the Gardar series make for VERY fast leveling. But as they wind down you start traveling more then killing.

So yes very viable, if you have good quest groupings. Usually the first stage or two at a quest hub. Elite quests are also good because your higher level should be able to easily solo them and they are worth bonus XP and usually a blue that lets the lowbie help more.

At 65 I took her into UK. Sick, just crazy. 1200+ XP per mob no rest. On my pally I can pull through the dragon room in 4-5 pulls. Took about 15-minutes. I pulled my daughter in on her Boomkin and dropped it to 3 pulls and less then 10 minutes - did it 3 times in 25 minutes. Mobs were giving 800 and change XP with the 3 of us. I believe it is 25 or 26 dudes and 6 dragons (double xp). We would have hit instance cap so about 213k an hour at 66 + Northrend greens for DE and cloth for her tailoring. When she hits 68 we will go back to questing, probably starting in Warsong Hold. There is some very good quest grouping out there and I am pretty sure we can hit 300k an hour or so which should get her to 70 quickly.

Does this work? I thought that when this was done the XP gain was based on the amount of damage that was done? That is my impression as well. But as I said before, with the XP changes I would not worry about the exp from kills. WotLK is a lot like the previous content, in that the exp from quest rewards is huge and the exp from mobs is very small now (as a percentage of the exp needed to level). Or at least it seems that way to me. I think that leveling speed is more a function of how many quests you can complete for the reward exp now. So keep them grouped and nuke away and don't worry about who tagged the mob. :)

Thanks for the responses guys. Unfortunately my pally tank is on the same account as the mage so I doubt that UK is an option with a warlock and felguard as the tank. I suppose that I'll just continue questing and as soon as I hit 68, I'll head over to warsong hold.

Tried this technique with my hunter (on the same account as mage) who was level 62 at the time with most of the HFP quests still to do. It seemed quicker than mage as rather than having to do a spell with a cast time to damage the mob before the pets killed it, I was able to fire off an arcane/concussion shot from hunter...and cast a dot from lock. So this meant I caused some damage before the pets both charged over and finished it off. For some reason, the XP loss for kills seemed more like 75% here. Perhaps the mobs were of a closer level than the ones that the mage were killing. So last night I managed to go from 62 to 64 :) I want to get to around 70-72 then I'll shelf him for a while and go back to the mage.

At 71 the hunter gets Kill Shot. My group is 69, I'm curious to try out four Kill Shots on an elite mob. :)
