I've decided to level up professions on my characters, the first profession Ill level is going to be engineering - I cant wait for rocket boots and glove cannon x5, and x5 mechanical robots, alarm-o-bot/landmines etc :
But, Im unsure on what I should have as second profession - is tailoring as good as it seems? Easy to level and nice buffs at max lvl? (Cloak enchants, leg armor)

This is my "endgame" so cost isnt a big factor, I cant think of much else to do or spend gold at.

Sounds like this is for PVP. You probably have a healer but if you don't maybe 5x herbalism. Soon to be nice self heal.

Did they buff that heal to be worth it? Last time I checked it was pathetic.

I chose jewelcrafting and blacksmithing on all my characters. Expensive? You betcha, but it opened a lot of options in gearing my guys.

I was thinking of engineering for my 5x shamans as well - for pvp ... what's a good 2nd profession? and what's it cost to lvl engineering ?

Any profession that requires thorium ore (or any other damn ore) will be expensive to level unless you mine it yourself. I paid 5kg per character to level JC to 400+ ;(

I have two full teams at 80 now so I already have everything except for an engineer... i've never tried engineering.
for my 5x pally team I'm working JC on all of them, got 3x of them doing the daily already and I haven't decided on any side stuff for them other than skinning.

you are going to need mining on at least one of your characters to support all of those engineers. I suggest a druid for this because of the instant flight you can mine a lot in a short period of time, the druid can do your herbs too.
skinning should probably take out just out of principle... you kill a lot of stuff you can skin in the game and make some money off of it.

if you have any mail wearers maybe a leatherworker.
if you have any plate wearers maybe a blacksmith.
with a tailor/enchanter you can make bags and enchant you stuff.

This may not be what you're looking for, but when I'm boosting in instances from 1-60, I find that I get enough cloth drops to level 2 toons tailoring from 1 to 300, and enchanting for 1 toon from 1 to 300 and a lot of left over dusts and essences (but still not enough for a 2nd toon though)

Sorry to jump in here.. Just wanted to point out the 3.2 patch notes that this will be buffed slightly, in case it makes any difference to anyone:

Herbalism
Increased healing from Lifeblood (Rank 6).
Lifeblood now scales slightly with maximum health. No longer affected by global cooldown.

Without a doubt jc/enchanting on whicher toon is gona be your healer. For me this isnt a problem as I already have 80's with mining, tailoring, so leveling those 2 with their help is less expensive.

from an earlier thread like this one, i followed his advice of 5x alch for more gold (by way of xmutes).

I have 2 teams:- 9 chars of 10 are jewelcrafters. 9 daily JC quests bring me 500+ gold each day in 30-35 minutes. Also BOP JC gems works for me very well. That's it...

personaly i went for tailoring on all but tanks

Real nice cloack enchant that works out seriosly good DPS for any fight thats less than 2 mins(read burst for PvP or heroic bosses) plus once every 4 days i earn about 200g per char doing the tailoring Cds in all of 5 mins.

and its cheap as hell to lvl up too!

I leveled four tailors in BC for the epic BoPs. Every tailor knows how much that sucked ass, starting around 340 ... ;)

Now I've got a grab-bag, just to cover bases like gem cuts, flasks and repair bots in the field. Tank is a blacksmith/miner for the obvious reasons. One warlock is JC/tailor, one is engineering/skinning, and one is alchemy/herbs. The priest is an enchanter and my main tailor. Only my tailors' skills fall short of 450. Pressing to the cap seems kind of pointless ... they've got their epics and can make specialty cloth. Is there anything else?

Using this guide (http://almostgaming.com/wowguides/wow-engineering-guide#expert), I have leveled engineering on my four mages to 405. Next step will be engineering on main char, the priest, and then finally Tailoring x4 on the mages. I'm going to regret it so much, spending a weekend of summer time on this :P

Roughly 2k gold for each char, was cheaper then I expected :)
I got mithril and thorium for a decent price but had to spend loads on fel iron. I think having a miner that can melt will make it alot cheaper, sometimes the ores sell on AH alot cheaper then the finished bars and you can save alot of gold by just melting it yourself. That said, after melting 800 or so bars I just didnt give a damn anymore. Melting ore is boring =P

I have a grab bag too, it works out pretty well:
445 Leatherworker
450 Tailor
450 Inscription
450 Enchanting

I have 3 guys leveling blacksmithing, JC, and gathering.

I have some lower level guys at 300 in alchemy and engineering, they'll level when I level them more.

I don't do it for gold, as much as I like to outfit my teams myself, to fill in gaps until I can get dropped and badge gear. I do sell some items, like Frost Lotus and Arctic Fur, and inks. At the very least you should have all 3 gathering professions on your team, otherwise you're leaving gold on the ground (or on the body with leather). It kills me that my current team has no skinner, but I just have no interest in stopping now and leveling it from 0.

There is a lot of synergy between them, too - the tailor and leatherworker can make items to DE into specific dusts and essences I need, and all of the gatherers fill the bank for others. The JCer makes rings and gems for everyone else, and the enchanters DE the green drops. I'm frequently gold poor, but my guild bank is rich in stockpiled mats!

Don't forget fishing and cooking, either - fishing dailies are a good, easy way for gold and rep in Outlands and Dalaran, and cooking at 450 lets you make some very good buff food - and the raw materials sell VERY well, the fish my rogue gets from doing the fishing dailies brings in a nice constant income, from selling the fish that raiders need for their buff food. Plus, the fishing dailies can have nice cash rewards too, and the occasional epic gem in the bag of fishing treasures.

I have 3 DKs cooling their heals in Shattrath right now, I'm thinking of making them a farm team, and cover all of the gathering trades, and fill in some of the other professions I don't have. One of them will have to be tailoring, just for the extra cloth drops in Northrend.

I just recently went back and leveled 6 new professions from 0 on my 3 priest dps, i had just never bothered with it until now, and I must say that with a multi-box team leveling skinning was one of the easiest and fastest things to power-level. Just round up blocks of animals and kill them and watch the skill points pile up.

Notably good leveling areas were the basilisks and turtles in the salt flats, the razor thingies on the southern path out of hellfire and the family packs of rhinos in borean tundra.

And as long as you're at it, try to level up some cooking, killing mobs for the meat is much less boring than fishing, although some fishing will likely still be needed to bridge between some recipe levels, but the way fishing works now, you can get the fish you need at pretty much any skill level (just a very reduced rate if you are severely under skilled for the area).
