Well my 4shamans and 1paladin dinged 80 yesterday. Had a lot of doing normal dungeons and it went quite easymode for me. Questing was a bitch but I got through.

So I ding 80, get craftables on my paladin http://eu.wowarmory.com/character-sheet.xml?r=Dragonblight&n=Shomey

I went to Heroic DTK and had 4 whipes on trollgore with best try on 34k HP left on him. I was not defence capped so I quit and farmed the trinket in HOL. Took 5 runs and it was good fun finding my own good way to kill the boss.

After that I went to HC UK and I got owned by the trash packs, they just smash me down.

Today HC gundrak, killed the 3th boss after like 8 tries and had 3 tries on the HC only boss but it seems that my dps lacks to much. The Colossus just owned my ass, no way I can outheal that. After 2 whipes (got him real low each time) I gave up. Went to COT and again my tank gets owned by the trash.

Seems like my paladin is one big puchbag, he has 537DEF and 20.6k hp and most trashpacks take me down in like 3 or 4 seconds.

I could spec one shaman resto but if 4x lesser healing wave don`t keep him up would one healer do a better job.

The reason I started boxing again is that I got annoyed with single boxing. The game just got bored.
So I`m not interested in solo boxing endless HC`s to get like 25k HP and run PUG naxx.

For me enough reason to quit. And I have a feeling the extra 5k HP those upgrades would bring would make a real difference.

So I`m wondering how others got up against this wall. Those with freshly dinged tanks, not those who had geared :-)

Trust me we all hit this wall at some point. Get his gear enchanted. Gear out your tank. The 2 most important items in the team are the tank and healer. If you gear out your tank it gets way easier. Once your dps gets better gear upgrades then the round robin lesser healing waves from 4x elemental shaman will be better but until then its best to gear one of them resto.

Edit: as multiboxxers we can't just stroll into any old heroic after dinging 80 and wtfpwn. 5 separate players who do this will struggle so for us doing all 5 at once we need to be even more prepared by having some good gear. Not saying full Naxx25 gear is required for us.. but a little more than your average 80's lets just say.

Well I bought every BOE epic tank piece I could for my pally, I also got a few naxx 10-25 tank pieces, im sitting at 26k unbuffed with 540 defense and I have no trouble tanking raids, havent gotten a team high enough to multi box heroics yet. You need at least 24k for heroics, you need a healer since your still gearing, having all of your dps stop dps to send off heals isnt going to get you anywhere. Switch one to heals, gear up more, when your sitting around 25k or bettere than try 4 dps.

Well it seems u kinda crafted items and just ran into the instances.. I think that you will need to build up ur gear more (not by just running around in alll the heroics), but by doing normal/heroic vault. Going to naxx, where there are other geared people so you can pick up some sick items.. Get some gold, and put the best enchants on ur items... For me, I run a mixture of pvp items quite a while. Do you have any interest in pvp? maybe just get some gear in there to fill the gaps of blues or w/e that you cant yet obtain in the heroics...

Thats my way I would do it..

O listen to Enndoh ('http://www.dual-boxing.com/forums/index.php?page=User&userID=23856')... That makes a ton of sense.. When im in pvp i have 4 shamans all elemental..

In normal BG. if I have 3 guys on me they dpsing the crap out of me right.. I throw a couple chain heals up.. But before I can get 1 or 2 chain lightnings off my health is so low I have to heal up again.. Essentially im doing no damage till one time i get stunned before I heal then dead.

I'm a big believer in dedicated healers. They give you much more stability and longevity in fights. But you can't really expect to ding 80 and clear heroics. It's just not a reasonable expectation. 535 Defense and 20k HP is fine for regular runs, and starting out heroics. I think you may have been expecting a bit much too early.

Also, agility is not a primary stat for prot paladins. go for stam IMO. You have no real enchants except your boots. You can get 40 stam to gloves, stam to your sheild (iirc), Threat and parry rating to gloves, a kit with 30 stam on your pants. etc. If you're DPS is similar to your tank, it's defnetely a gear issue, spend time on getting gear and getting your DPS hitcapped, before banging your head against the wall of heroics.

I`m a bit frustrated atm. Guess I set the bar to high. Maybe I should get those enchants first and maybe some pvp gear as well yea. It`s just that I seen people yelling you can run into Gundrak with greens. Guess thats with a geared tank.

Also, agility is not a primary stat for prot paladins.
I needed the color gem to get the Meta on my head :-) the other gems costed to much for the green belt.

Those are the shamans.

Guess I give it a try with a dedicated healer before I give up.

Btw how do you guys handle dedicated healers? Just run a healing macro with the same spam button that you use to tank and dps?

Use this for your red gem:
http://www.wowhead.com/?item=40039
Champion's Monarch Topaz
+8 Strength and +8 Defense Rating

Or any other orange gem with a beneficial stat.

I have my healing keys bound to F7-F12. F3-F6 is bound to /target partymember /cast lesser healing wave macros. The main assist button that the 4 slaves spam, the healer uses /tar party1 instead of /assist party1. So I'm always on my tank unless I'm healing someone else.

It's not all about gear. It is a lot about practicing.
Some encounters seem trivial to me now, when they seemed just impossible on first tries.

My Paladin has 525 defense, 23.5k health. Nothing spectacular. I am not a good player, hyper casual, basically no experience of high level.
I nevertheless cleaned several heroics (Utgarde Keep, Culling of Stratholm, 3/5 Gundrak, 3/5 Drak'tharon). I just bought a shield formy Shamans for 35 Emblems of Heroism. Great feeling.

Trust me, practice the encounters. You will get some stupid repair bills for a while, but eventually, you will get better. It is you getting better that is going to make a difference quicker than your improving gear, actually.

And yes, a dedicated healer makes a huge difference. While you tank gets healed, 3 characters still DPS ...

I ran dailies for a bit to get the cash to buy a bunch of BOE epic stuff. The amount of BOE stuff you can get is insane. Run a complete set of dailies (~300g X 5 = 1500g+) and you should be able to buy 1 - 3 epics a day.

I focused gearing my tank first to def cap, but at least got the titansteel weapons for each toon. However, with the tournament weapons you could do those dailies and just get those as they are as good or better than the crafted ones. Definitely get the one for your tank if you don't have the red sword of courage.

Of course, if you want to "earn your gear" you may have to start with specific bosses and work your way up to a complete instance. For example, the first few in Gun'drak (1 in one entrance, 2 at the other entrance) or Culling of Strat.

Get all the enchants/gems you can afford too, even if they are the cheaper versions they are still a big boost.

I have a mixed group and run a dedicated healer though.

Also, keep in mind people say a lot of things that are likely to be exaggerated and/or specific to their set up.

The standaard 400defence that your character gets for free gives you ~5% chance to be critted. 1/20 is a crit, that shouldn`t mather to much I think.

sorry if that came off a bit harsh.. 535 is where you need to be for heroics and 540 for raiding.

Edit: these numbers are a basis to help you thru the heroics and raiding with the least amount of chances for a wipe thru gear. 1/20 is more than enough to justify reaching those numbers. Remeber every bit counts.

I would also recommend what Fur said - respec one shaman to Resto. They're awesome healers (Earth Shield rules my world ) and you can still dps on trash with them.

And regarding the def cap - 535 is enough for heroics since none of the bosses is lvl83.

@ OP

Definately spec a shaman resto, it will help you a ton. Also, Id do some research as to what reg lvl 80 instances drop, and get those items. The quest in Halls of Stone gives some good pre heroic legs or boots (don't remember, but it is a tanking item). Once you get the gear/technique down, you can do it in your sleep :P

Good luck man

I do get "critiqued", that's for sure. I can still wipe on regular packs out of bad luck (even though it is usually because I get too optimistic and think that my healer still has time for that extra lava burst ;) ). But ok, that does not bother me that much. I am already too happy that I can see heroics now that I multi-box. It also feels good to know that there is still a lot of room for improvement in my gear.

I'm not usually on all the time, but after I hit 80 in May, I was probably online a few hours almost every night for a month running dailies and getting crafted gear and such to prep for heroics. It took me exactly a month to my first full heroic clear (UK). Now I'm working on getting all my professions leveled and all my 300 riding skill money to delay a little until 3.2 when we start getting Conquest emblems for the same effort.

Isn't it 535 DEF for heroics though?

In theory - yes, you should only need 535.

I have found that in practice, I get ROFLStomped with anything less than 540 Def. Yes, I know the math behind it doesn't justify it, but I tried some heroics with less than 540 and got punked. I switch a trinket and got back up to 540, and it was a cake walk. (I had a holy trinket equipped by accident I think)Yes, the time old QQ about "I ONLY NEED 535 DEFENSE FOR HEROICS", Ok, so maybe it isn't really a QQ, but what some people many NOT realize, is not only does defense make you uncrittable, it ALSO adds to avoidance.

From: http://www.wowwiki.com/Defense
Each point of +Defense skill adds 0.04% to the chance to be Missed ('http://www.wowwiki.com/Miss'), to Block ('http://www.wowwiki.com/Block'), to Dodge ('http://www.wowwiki.com/Dodge') and to Parry ('http://www.wowwiki.com/Parry') for players. This means +25 Defense will grant you an extra 1% Miss, Parry, Dodge, and Block. The formula is constant across all classes So 540 Defense is not a BAD thing at all. I see new tanks getting trashed hard. usually because they're defensive stats aren't up there yet because their gear is just getting them by, they don't have the high ilvl stuff with high avoidance. A fresh 80 may not even have 400 defense, check and make sure you do.

I agree with what other people said here. Spec a dedicated healer that doesn't do any dps.

I got my 4 shammies and protadin to 80 on a server without any other 80s. I started doing heroics with them the day I dinged, cleared 2. You NEED a healer (I leveled 3 ele 1 resto since 70, so I was used to it by then).

My method of healing is as follows: earth shield on same button as pally shield pull.
Have a button for riptide on the tank (this is a very powerful heal)
Have a button for lesser heal that target's each group member (mine were F1-F5) (make sure your tank one is easy to reach, you'll be spamming this)
Have a button for NS + Healing wave

I also had buttons for 4x chain heal on each shaman and 4x lesser healing wave (on shamans, not on tank) for heavy AoE fights.
I also had a round robin each shaman lesser healing wave on tank button, for those exceptionally strong bosses (HoL first boss in berserker stance with +30% damage debuff = awesome). You need this button less and less as your gear improves.

I pretty much never used healing wave or single target chain heal (although that's just because I never thought of a way to make them easy to use).

Also, don't give up and be prepared to wipe a lot :).

A dedicated healer will do a better job of keeping you up. My resto shaman is a bit geared but Earth shield + Riptide + some LHW is easily enough to keep up a newly geared (L80 blues) tank through heroics.

There are quite a few easy to get upgrades for your tank that would help you out.

Go to the auction house for these BoEs :
Burning Skull Pendant
Crusader's Square Pauldrons
Tattered Castle Drape
Waistguard of the Risen Knight

Run a normal Oculus for the quest reward Bracers of Reverence. Nice ring drops from the last boss too and there is a tasty trinket for your casters as well.

Work on Wyrmrest reputation for Breastplate of the Solemn Council. Then do Argent Crusade for the head enchant. Enchant your other items too - don't have to go all out on BiS enchants but at least get something on them. Work on your enchanting for +stam rings enchant as well.

I 5 boxed all heroics the same way poca did healing wise with nearly the same setup. (hunter instead of a shaman)

3 elementals+ 1 resto is best with a bad geared tank.
4 ele shamans is alot easier then running with a healer IF your tank is well geared.

So my suggestion is to either do quests and buy lots of gear for your tank.. (i personally regret that i never did it this way)

Next patch paladin tanks got death prevention with 2 min cooldown wich is tbh fking insane.

"Ardent Defender has been redesigned - Damage that would take you below 35% health or taken while you are at 35% health is reduced by 10/20/30%. In addition, attacks which would otherwise kill you cause you to be healed up to 10/20/30% of your maximum health. This healing effect cannot occur more often than once every 2 min."

Once you're def capped for your desired bosses, you're MUCH better off increasing block value and avoidance due to diminishing returns.

I geared my pally tank solo before starting to box, same with my primary ele shaman, but when i got my 3 new ele shamans to 80 I was able to clear gundrak and DTK fairly easily without using a dedicated healer. 4xLHW = 12-20k in 1.5seconds which as far as I'm aware, is better than the raw output of any single healer. In saying that, there's only a couple of times i really have to keep 4xLHW'ing my tank during trash, usually on the eck trash because of the poisons that they apply. Otherwise he only needs one, or none, 4xLHW hits per pack. There is also the other side to the argument, having 4xLHW's being cast means that if one of your guys is dead, you still get healed, whereas if your healer dies accidentally, you get no more healing unless you switch to using a macro which makes the remaining shammies start healing as well..

I have not yet seen an enounter that 4xLHW healing will not cope with, but I havent boxed all the heroics either (Just GD,DTK,COT,VH exept cyanigosa).

540 def cap should be the only priority when gearing, then move to stam/avoidance. No point having 25k hp if you're crittable, you'll get pwned.

he isnt geared to the teeth basically has 542 def 21k health.this is after running Utgarde Keep,Drak'Tharon Keep, and Drak'Tharon Keep a few times.

535 is a def minimum there is no cap. Once yeh got enough hitpoints to survive what every bosses magic damage, yer going after, stacking defs is still about the best stat yeh can stack.

what I did was try getting into all of the instance in order of level what I found is if yeh end up skipping allot of instances yeh will be missing allot of gear

Your guys have allot of gear that is level 74. yeh been concentrating to much on you tank

having a dedicated healer helps allot due to the fact there considerable more efficient then having a dps cast heal spells.

One of the thing yer running into is that yer dps cant burn down the critters fast enough

I made some minor upgrades to my chars (dk + 4 ele shamans) and now running the easy heroics (UK, Gundrak, azjol-nerub) results in very few deaths. It was more of a matter of getting the fights down than a gear issue, although my dk has gone from 25k to 29k recently and the extra buffer seems to help quite a bit, shamans started around 13k hp with 1100 +dmg unbuffed, now around 16k hp with 1600 +dmg unbuffed just from heroic drops + welfare arena gear.

I started strictly with quested gear on the shamans and boe gear on the DK. It was pretty frustrating at the start, but the upgrades do come very quickly.

http://www.youtube.com/stoatie has some videos from when I first started out including a failed attempt on the collosus in gundrak. Fire eles really make that fight. Things go much smoother now. If I think about it I'll record the runs tomorrow to compare.

You definately need 535 def that's number one goal. However, point wise even after that defense is still a very good stat to stack way past the 535. My team isn't up to heroics yet but even when I'm solo with a group I still need heals. Resto is really only option in heroic's. If I'm in a single box group and a non healer spec tries to keep me up they would constantly be spamming heals and wouldnt be able to dps anyway. So no reason not to go with a resto on your team.

Here's my paladin's armory ('http://www.wowarmory.com/character-sheet.xml?r=Garona&cn=Bore'). I don't raid much but I think I have decent gear. I definately still need a dedicated healer in heroic groups though.

My team can still only reliably kill 2 heroic bosses (the mammoth turning one and eck - enter from the far side from the summon stone in gundrak) and that's with a lot of wellfare pvp epics on the shammans (sadly there isn't any wellfare tanking gear I could find so I'm still mostly in crafted blues; not affording yet the crafted purple)

I think as many have said having a resto among your shamans is a must - earth shield alone makes a world of difference (glyph it too)

Because I'm not too successful I'm just doing the Midsummer for cash and distraction and fun (and xp on some lower alts I swap in) but I think with a few weeks of dailies you can afford to craft or buy crafted epic to make your tank good enough

oh yea... the level 80 wall.

hope you can get over this one. otherwise, the game will suck. no really, a lot of people reach level 80 and are not ready for the sudden stop in just about everything. it turns from a leveling game to a gearing game and its slow as molassas. or something.

oh and one more thing, when i tried tanking at 530 def, i had zero crits. call it luck. but being short some def didnt mean i was getting critted left and right. its a chance game and i got lucky. of course, to be safe, hit 535, at least for heroics.

but moreso... good luck getting over the level 80 wall.

How I did it?

I had a lame (geared) paladin tank and x4 elemental shamans. I just kept practising heh. My gear didn't improve for a while but the instances became ZZZZ.
Speccing a shaman resto is all well and good (I'm against it for a simple heroic - but opinions are opinions.. go with what is comfortable) but you will still die until you learn everything. Even silly trash mobs do unique things that can really mess you up. I'm assuming you died in Utgarde keep on trash because some mobs stun? 100% dmg heh. Collossus in Gundrak is a pain untill.. well. All I did was use NR totem and it was easy lol.

Post your macros/ingame setup if you still play - then people can really help :D

I had 20k hp on my tank. Shamans had the blue pvp starter set. My tank now has 28k hp and the shamans are nearing 2k sp buffed (srsly, no drops so far QQ) which isn't the best.. but makes the heroics i'm farming mind numbingly easy.

*edit*
My healing is basically this. I have two macros for dps. One is a castsequence they all follow for pewpew.. the other is a simple macro telling two to target the tank and lesser healing wave while the remaining two cast lightning bolt. Only need to press it once (twice if you let your tank get stupidly low) and you are fine usually. Healing stream totem really helps :P

If you want to say to go past 535 defense for avoidance you may as well say to go past 540. Going for avoidance dodge is better than defence by a little bit, so ideally you'd use the extra defense on dodge rating instead. Getting uncritable is very nice, but isn't a requirement. You should gem/enchant for it if possible, but just because you're a little short doesn't mean you can't tank a heroic. Don't forget resilience(the pvp shoulder enchant isn't bad, 30 stam 15 resil), but use defense as much as possible due to the avoidance it gives.

Block is good in heroics, but not against raid bosses that hit hard, so for heroics block is fine but if you want to go into raids you'll eventually need to switch it out to avoidance.

For progression, EH has time and time again been the preferred method for gearing. That means gem for stamina after you're uncritable. Of course meet your meta and sacrificing some stamina to get a socket bonus is justifiable. All gems should typically be 24sta(blue), 8def12sta(yellow), or 8dodge12sta(red), but going for extra defense for uncritability if needed is good too.

Strength is your threat stat, and also adds some nice block value, but threat shouldn't be a problem.

4x lhw spam should be able to keep your tank up, but you lose all of your dps when you do that. A resto shaman keeps 3 dps going 100% of the time.

I doubt heroics were meant to be a cakewalk the day you hit 80.

What I did was I single box my pally first and join guild/pug 5man heroics and 10/25man raids. The next thing I know my pally already have decent gear for tanking and healing. I started out Holy then whenever the tank has a better gear than the drop then it goes to me. Be wise also in purchasing items from heroic emblems.

I use this as my guide when I started dressing up my tank

Goodluck and it takes time to have a decent tank for heroics... :)

yep, there is so much good gear just lying around with factions that you will get just by doing dailies, easy quests and in the AH, gold is king in wotlk as you can get decent epics/blues on the ah for not much at all, if you were on caelstrasz I could give you some of the boe tank gear I've got lying around in the gb lol. I run with 1xpally and 4xshammy and only stepped foot in a raid once, the heroics I know I can do without wiping but have noticed that it probably would be better to have a dedicated healer, I have no problems with 4xLHW but am also thinking of speccing one resto to switch too on the tougher fights. My gear isn't great - see link - but it's enough to see me through grundrak, DTK, UK and some of the first bosses in other instances. Heroics are more about learning the encounters than gear so much, as long as you have ok gear, have resonable defense, hit and know the encounters you should be fine on these lesser heroics. Look at the hit my pally - sweet fa and she does ok with threat.

Thats exactly what i did, but if ur a 5 boxer with a paladin , im not sure why you would do this, but with just 4 shamans I had to quest which is a pain.. im waiting for 3.2 and doing solid BG leveling

Maybe, if the rate was enough to make that viable on a reasonable timescale.

But I was big into old-school AV and pre-BG world PVP. New battlegrounds, arena, never did it for me. And they keep gravitating back to focusing on raids, and I couldn't care less about raids.

Ive said it a few times before but the best thing I did when I hit 80 was to level JC on my tank and get the crafted trinkets and stack a bunch of stamina gems in them, also the dragons eye gems are nice. This bumped my health from 21k to 25k, with 25k being in my opinion the ideal number to start tanking heroics. I managed to get first boss in Cot down with 21k health with some hard work, but when I went back with 25k health I easily 1 shot the rest of the instance then cleared Gundrak, and Uk only wiping a couple of times to the elemental boss in Gundrak.

Here is my tank for reference http://eu.wowarmory.com/character-sheet.xml?r=Tarren+Mill&n=Hoebag

Dont copy my tanking spec though because I messed it up :)

I entered heroic instances with 18k HP on my tank and worse gear than yours.

What I had cristal clear at the beginning was that one of my shamans had to be a dedicated healer and the dps ones needed enough DPS to down trash packs in 2 minutes and bosses in no more than 4 minutes because that was the time my healer ran oom while nonstop spamming lhw on the tank.

During the first week I just made myself a list of bosses to grind list. I farmed ONLY these bosses because they were easy and I could use their badges to buy better gear. Also these bosses were very easy and fast to reach in most of the cases.

1 ) Mamooth boss in Gundrak --> just interrupt hist transformation with earth shock
2 ) Snake boss in Gundrak --> Place your shamans on the stairs at the "arena" looking thing where the boss is. Tank the boss in the middle of the arena. Drop 3 x healing + 1 mana totems and 4 Fire elemental totems. remember to pop heroism. The fire elementals and the paladin consecration will keep the snakes away from your DPS and healer and will most probably give you the boss specific achievement the first time you do this boss in this way.
3 ) Prince Keleseth in UK --> Shadow resist aura. Run to him, drop healing totems and 4x magma totems. Then DPS the boss and ignore the ads.
4 ) Contructor and controller in UK --> Put the shamans on follow and run to the boss. Drop 4 x grounding totem and magma totems. Burn the caster first and then the melee. Keep grounding totems and magma totems as much as you can. Having the shamans near you will prevent the melee guy from charging at your healer.
5 ) Orc commander in Nexxus --> Just kill him. He is an easy miniboss and drops a badge
6 ) Culling of stratholme --> all the bosses are easy. Just ignore the timers and take your time. The first time I downed that instance it took me lots of time, but gor very good gear. In the zombies place just keep your magma totems up to prevent zombies disrupting your casting.

You will find that you can down some other bosses too, but these are a sure kill with your current tank and gear. In a couple of days you will have enough badges to buy yourself some better gear and down entire instances.

Thanks guys. Got a lot of usefull feedback out of it. Today I allready started missing boxing (talking about addiction). I was just in a terrible mood yesterday and all the whipes din`t help much there.

I`m going to login now and get a dual spec on one shaman to get a dedicated healer up. Then I get some new tries in, TBH it can only go better at this point.

@ DIWA

Thanks for the gear list. Found some possible improvements.

Besides that I might run some pvp to get some easy epics as well.

I`m going to login now and get a dual spec on one shaman to get a dedicated healer upJust to add my voice to the chorus telling you that this really will make a world of difference.

Having everyone stop DPS to heal just delays the inevitable wipe :)

Good luck finding the fun again - there really is some to be had!

Get a +22 def enchant on that shield immediately. That's the 540 def sorted right there.

Sort out the rest of your enchants. Buy a blue belt off the AH that has real stats on it (or run Draktharon for it...decent. Runs at around 200G on my server, but it is definitely worth the coin.

Set up macro's for the 4 x chain heal spam (2 on tank, 2 on group) or a HW or LHW 4x spam on the tank. It is manageable. Plan for your heals. Know what
the timing is like for your tank getting low. Then allow for it.

With badges, and some rep rewards you can get your tank over 30k hp without too much drama. Pay attention to your cooldowns for bosses and such and be prepared to suck
for a while. You will get there.

4 ele shamans is alot easier then running with a healer IF your tank is well geared.

Please define "well geared".

I'm in a mix of 10/25 gear (Naxx, OS, even a piece of Ulduar) and I still need to heal in heroics. So if your tank's gear is above mine - which would be end game level - then I'm not sure your definition of "well geared" is realistic.

My tank: http://www.wowarmory.com/character-sheet.xml?r=Kil%27jaeden&n=Nisryus

In normal mode 5 mans - ya, healing is rare. In Heroics? They still pound on me plenty hard.
I agree with Fur, my tank: http://www.wowarmory.com/character-sheet.xml?r=Madoran&n=baylen
My tank is in 4/5 Conqueror's T8.5 and 1/5 Valorous T7.5. I run 41% Dodge, 29k armor and 35k HP unbuffed. I heal often. A dedicated healer makes this much easier so that I'm not sacrificing DPS to heal.

A little update:

I spend a hour 3 getting some gear changes, macro and keybinds set.

Went into DTK, had 2 very bad whipes due blackholes on my shamans while beeing amazed how much earthshield helps.

After a while I got the hang of the healing. DPS even improved because they dont have to heal anymore.

Whiped the first try on trollgore (due healing trouble, needed to learn how and what) second try he went down smooth. Bloodlust used but no fire elementals.

Thanks for the tips and motivation to try once more. I know its not the hardest boss but it went sooooo smooth really. No real bad situations with HP I could not handle.

Btw my shamans went from 1k dps(due healing) to 1.8k with their shitty blue gear. I think thank my dps macro lacks since they idle quit a bit. Maybe haste rating makes them to fast. Here is the macro:

/castsequence [nomod] reset=combat Lightning Bolt(Rank 14),Flame Shock(Rank 9),Lava Burst(Rank 2),Chain Lightning(Rank 8),Lightning Bolt(Rank 14),Lightning Bolt(Rank 14),Chain Lightning(Rank 8),Lightning Bolt(Rank 14),Lava Burst(Rank 2)
I start with LB because FS gave them to much agro at the start

the gear on your tank seems fine.
the problem is probably style.

you need to keep holy shield up at much as possible.
for example my tank uses
/castrandom holy shield,
/castrandom x,y,z

for just starting out with heroics you need to work the crowd control and making a resto healer is probably a must at the start.
shaman should hex, mages should sheep, etc until your team is geared out enough to do everything without it.
as for healing, a resto shaman places an earth shield on your tank and it heals the tank for a huge amount.
my healer does nothing but heals and when spec'ed for heals he's more mana efficient and he can usually heal the whole team leaving my DPS to have more time doing DPS.
some people think you are loosing DPS when you do this and that may be true but when everyone is casting heals you loose DPS anyway.

as for CoT, I pull everything to a room and do all fights in that room (the first 10 waves) . the tank can usually ignore the trash running around as long as he keeps moving. A-S the groups and run back to the room.
use magma totems, they give huge DPS in this room. use as much AoE dmg that your team has.

For CoS, I've gotten into the habit of pulling with AS, then when I get close enough I cast Holy Wrath. It gives me 3 seconds to position myself so that I have enough time to run to the caster in the group and position myself without eating the crits from the melee mobs. I use a castsequence macro with just Holy Shield, Hammer of the Righteous, Judgement of Wisdom, and Shield of Righteous. That macro is bound to the same key my dps are spamming. I manually weave in Exocism and Consecration. That way I don't burn through all my mana and still hold aggro.

I run DK, 4 Elemental Shaman and faced the same hurdle you are facing.

I will say that aside from Trollgore, I think that Gundrak is far easier to start heroics with. Particularly with the black peanutbuttercup of death dropping Soul Mages in the start of DTK.

Before I had geared out the tank, I had to pop the defensive abilities with every trash pull to survive (for DK's, this is primarily Icebound Fortitude). I am still leveling the Paladin, but going Prot and using the Redoubt and Holy Shield talents is key. Also, I am assuming that you are using BoSanctuary on the Paladin.

Another thing that I found when playing my other paladin in instances (only got him to 67 before I rerolled with RAF), Divine Shield as an Oh Shit button was not good as it would dump aggro to the rest of the team. However, I would use Divine Protection (yes the low level one) that allows 50% damage reduction and I wouldn't dump aggro. The mechanics of this may have changed, since it has been a year or so since I played the Paladin tanking instances, but I found that the 50% damage reduction DI spell much more useful. It's on a 3 minute cooldown though.

I am not a believer in speccing a shaman resto, but I will admit that when starting heroics, I tried it that way to begin with. Once I got enough money to gear out the team in all the craftable Titansteel pieces available (the mace, necklace and ring), things became much easier.

PM me if you want more info, as much of what I am saying is rehaching what others have already posted.

Why castrandom? If you do that then you get all kinds of "that spell is not ready yet" messages, and no guarantee it'll cast the spell you want.

I'm jumping in a little late to the discussion, but wanted to give some details of how I geared up. I have a mixed team, and started solo heroics using paladin tank, mage/warlock/shaman DPS, and dedicated holy priest healer. Gearing focus was tank and healer; DPS got little attention unless opportunities and gear presented itself.

I used as much crafted gear as I could: engineer tanking goggles and titansteel shield/boots as well as crafted blues for the other remaining slots if I could make it on the tank, and titansteel guardians for the healer and shaman (spellpower daggers did not exist yet, but used Kirin Tor tabards until I could buy their rep dagger) as well as any blue tailoring/leatherworking gear that I could to boost the healer first and DPS second. I had my own Blacksmith, Tailor(x3), and Leatherworker. I didn't have to buy or trade for any gear before starting heroics.

I was actually doing heroics with only about 527 defense and 22k hps to start, since that was the best I had or could make at the time and didn't want to wait any longer to try or spend any money on the AH. I started just doing 2/3 of H UK (skip Prince Keleseth), 2/4 or 3/4 of H DTK (skip Novos, and usually King Dred), and found all of H HoL easy enough for me (having a great holy priest was key for me for Ionar). I would just keep this easy rotation up each day until I had more epic drops and emblems to buy better gear with before starting to try harder stuff. Luckily, Prince Keleseth in H UK dropped his defense sword on my first solo kill to help boost my defense a little more to the cap, but never bothered with him for a while afterwards to avoid any likely wipes. I probably could have added at least 3/5 or 4/5 of H Gundrak to the list (not do Gal'darah), but just didn't think about trying it right away.

My priest would definitely get a workout at times. Sure, I would get hit by an occassional crit by not being capped, but it rarely resulted in a wipe so long as I tried to keep him close to full hps. Wipes did happen though, but at least I proved that you don't need any min defense or min hps to start heroics. Just do what is within your ability, and then move to more difficult fights as you gear up. I'll have new warrior and DK tanks in a few weeks, so I'll be going through the tank gear grind all over again, just easier since my priest outgears heroics now.

Rep is also very important, did you do all the quest for Wyrmrest accord? Did you do the dailies/quest-chains for Argent Crusade? Dailies/quest-chains for Sons of Hodir? Rep rewards are great! Wyrmrest has lots of tank gear, Argent Crusade head enchant and Sons of Hodir your shoulder enchant. Where you wearing the proper tabard to gain rep for your guys once you could start wearing it? There is a ton of Rep gear that is great and you should of been working on that while leveling as much as possible.

I have 2 pally tanks one has 10/25 man gear and sits at cap def (540), 30k HP, 27k Armor. Second tank is cap def, 24HP about 23k armor. Both have done the rep grind on Wyrmrest as well as Argent Crusade and Sons of Hodir.

And as a lot of the others said enchants and the right gems make a hell of a difference, I love the 24 stam gems myself I have as many of those as possible and I just meet the requirements for the meta gem, I personally like the 32 stam one myself.

Dont worry you will get there is not as hard as it looks, it just takes time and practice at pulling the trash mobs and killing the bosses.

I also run dedicated healer and heal like crazy, but my healer is a priest and 3 shaman dps. The priest has about 18k mana and the shaman stand around 16K mana and can maintain 1700-2300 dps depending on the situation, one of my guys has a crappy hit rate since that one is the one with the second pally. Two of the DPS at 79 and the other at like 26 so really bad.

Dont give up, never surrender!

Got to second all those "get crafted gear" posts.
I've replaced my shadow priest with another shaman a couple of days ago. All that shaman wears is either quested, crafted or raid BoE dropped (only exception are her rings, which are from UK and CoS). Said shaman just did 3.6k dps on a 4 player Eck kill.

And just in case of "why do you kill heroic bosses with only 4?!?):
Am trying to kill some heroic bosses with just 4 toons right now, cause am 4-boxing with my wife playing her toon for heroics usually. She is rather busy right now, so am getting some emblems for the new shaman.

Oh, and my other toons don't wear any BoP raid items either. We don't raid at all, so am not outgearing heroics thaaat much.

Long story short: Grind some dailies and buy some nice BoEs for an easier journey through heroics. :)

There is an Elemental Shaman DPS macro around here (check Fursphere's post history) that is quite good.

Not good to be 1K or even <2K DPS -- we did this much back in TBC at L70. :)

The skill is still the same.

I had a few whipes on Novos before I had to quit the HC for today. Trying to find the right way to kill him. On normal I just moved all chars far away from eachother and move them out of the blizzard by hand which worked like a charm. On heroic it seems easyer to hug the boss, when the aoe hits move the team to the other side and use the resto shaman to LHW all shamans back up. Had him on 20-40k hp twice so things are improving. The resto shaman does the job. And maaaaaaaan, earthshield works like sweet. I raided with a resto shaman but ES allways seemed like a extra handy thing, now that I have total control I actually see it`s real power. At trash where I used to drop in HP fast I keep high with just ES and a riptide once in a while.

A while ago I started HC gundrak. Went in at the snake boss and one shotted him with the resto shaman doing all the healing (micro management healing, around 15-20 buttons atm)

After that I went outside and gone back in by the other entrance. Oneshotted the mammouth guy. Again micro healing with the resto shaman and 1 or 2 chain heals during aoe. Could have done without that but just to be sure.

Eck was next. He went down on like try 4 or 5. Had some problems taunting him off. The kill try went smooth. He did a growth of some sort. I know he can enrage so I started spam healing but dint pop cooldowns on the paladin. Incomming damage wasnt much higher anyway.

Next was drakari colossus. One shotted :-) No aoe healing used at all! I allways did 3x healingstream and 1xnature totem but it seems that the resto healing stream makes a BIG difference. All the aoe damage that I had to deal with was easily outhealed by LHW on my resto shaman.

Yesterday I wanted to quit. Now I oneshot them :-), sweet!

Omw to the last boss now.

I recommend using the max-range trick on eck, tank him right in the arch into his cave and have your shaman stand about 30 yards out on the top of the mound with the ribcage sticking out of it. Removes the need to taunt, since eck never attacks anyone but the tank.

Edit: the first time i did this i made sure i started tanking him at about 40 yards and slowly brought him back until the dps started landing spells (the heals all have higher range, so it's a safe way to judge it without dying before you find the right spot)

I prefer to have my guys on the corner right next to the left side of the arch, they all face out and then I pull Eck and bring him and tank him facing away from the group he is right next to them so not much chance of him pouncing on them and if he does I can pick him up right away. Real easy that way he goes down like a sack of potatoes, I can one shot most of them, I might have an issue with the Colossus some of the times but for the most part had Gun on farm for a while.

Glad to hear you are doing better, its always about learning the fights and after a little bit they just become second nature.

Ill try that the next time it resets :-)

I just killed the last boss on the second try. First try I whiped with the boss at 1645hp. I just had to laugh about that, not really anything to get sad about lol. I find the last boss rather easy. Everything is outhealable by the resto shaman, he got taken by the rhino once so I tossed him a LOH to keep him up. Besides that hes a fair tank and spank, like all bosses in that place.

you've probably managed to make it through the worst of the heroic learning curve from what it sounds like. Other instances provide unique (or not so unique) challenges, but it mostly comes down to figuring out how to handle the difference in incoming damage from the mobs between normal -> heroic.

My resto shaman macro is stupidly silly, but effective. With this I have cleared all but three heroics (I gave up on the team before trying them).

#showtooltip
/use 13
/use 14
/castrandom [target=Coltimar] Earth Shield,,,Riptide,,,,,Chain Heal,,,,,Lesser Healing Wave,,,,Chain Heal,,,,,Lesswer Healing Wave,,,,,Chain Heal

My experience in multiboxing is that it's 90% attitude. When I approach an instance with confidence I tend do well, when think "here goes the repair bill" I sucketh much. Here's what I know:

1) someone has killed all of the bosses I want to kill 5 boxing 1 pally 4 shaman
2) my computer setup is adequate
3) my macros are and boxing setup is solid
4) everyone who has succeeded can't be that much smarter than I am

With that in mind I KNOW I can anything that has been done, with enough practice. Keep hittin' in.

hmmm

From what I've been doing, I dont really think that a castrandom on healing is very good whatsoever.

On dps it is fine to start with, and from testing (there is a thread on shammy dps macro fixxors) they can pull good numbers.

FWIW I have a couple of keybinds for the healer and spam a castrandom atm on the dps. THe healing keybinds are right next to
the dps spam/mash key and takes absolutely minimum effort to cast a heal when required.
Give earth shield its own key. I have riptide macroed with trinket activation and I have that on the spam key with the healer.

The trick is trying to remember what key does what in an emergency, without dropping the ball. This comes in time.
You WILL learn from your mistakes.

Agree on the gearing. Get all the crafteds, JC items....as much as you can. Choose your rep and work on it until its finished.
If you run heroics often, it will not take time to grind out.

There are some doozy quest lines like the sons of hodir, or the ebon blade entry quests that are all boxable and will net you some
solid coin for the amount of time invested.

Go hard.
Have fun.
Keep working.

You will be flying sooner than you think.

I builded my whole setup in a way that I have the most control over healing. The tanking and dps actions are all a castsequence spam macro while the healing is basic but direct.

I played a holy priest in vanilla wow and a resto shaman in WOTLK so I had my fair share of healing experience and I know I`m not a bad healer

So I focus a lot on the single target healing, positioning and spamming a dps/tank key.

I spent 40 emblems on a nice belt for my paladin, and she now has 537 defence (from 525). I went for a quick Heroic Utgarde Keep run, and I cannot say I felt such a big difference, honestly. It just felt like a nice run where everything goes according to plan.

I guess it would be more significant in a harder instance.

I guess it would be more significant in a harder instance. You won't feel that much of a difference. It's only meant to prevent the occasional moments where you're tanking a lot of mobs, are a bit low on health and then get hit with a badly timed crit.

It comes down to gearing the toon correctly.

If you read decent tanking forums, for example http://maintankadin.failsafedesign.com/ (particularly for pallies)....gearing makes such a difference.
For example with my loladin....geared up pretty well, 540 def and a LOT of dodge, block and parry along with different gear sets for each.
Can go into heroic trash fights and even BOSS fights and not EVEN get hit....it makes a MASSIVE difference. MASSIVE.

Bear in mind, my toon is geared PRE Naxx. Avoidance and mitigation gear makes all the difference.

To be honest, gearing your tank should be a priority. It can make it so much easier.

I dont mean to pyss in your pocket at all, but one piece of gear wont make all the difference. It comes down to the whole package. Over time it becomes obvious.

I had the same issue intially even with my raid geared pally tank. The shamans in leveling gear and leftover S4 stuff didn't cut it.

I dual-specced one of the shamans to resto and replaced Flame Shock with Earth Shield and Chain Lightning with Riptide on the resto shaman's action bar.

The resto shammy doeesn't do that much damage, but the two HoTS together with 1x resto power healing totem and 3x normal healing totems are enough most of the time. If I should ever need more healing, I pop 4x lesser healing wave and that's it. =]

David

All I can say now is that a resto shaman is great. I will never go back to 4x elemental for instancing. I cleared Gundrak, DTK, COT stratholme, The Nexus and Utgarde keep since I respecced to resto 24hours ago.

I also killed the first 2 bosses in UP but had to leave for shopping after a few whipes there. Quite a hard event.

on your offdays... take your tank or resto shammy into naxx and pug with a group. this will make it easier on your boxing group the next time around if you do get better gear.

make sure you read the meters when you're in a pug tho, sometimes all it takes is low dps and you'll never get past the first boss. and last thing to note, dont take charities. if a good healing item drops that can be used for others as well, but instead goes to you... there may be a hidden agenda behind that, especially if its a mostly-guild run.

but if you'd rather not pug (which is know is one of the reason some guys here multi-box in the first place) then ignore my post. thanks. have a great time!!
if you need a pally tank rotation or tactic, i've posted about this a while ago so do a search if you have to. good luck!

Been there dude, I actually canceled all of my account for a month then went back and gave it another try but I wasn't wiping on heroics I was wiping on normal instances and it really really sucked so I canceled everything. But when I went back I took it a bit slower and got some decent gear in pvp and rep and got my enchants and whatever else I could get a hold of and now I can do any instance and I am working on heroics. I have cleared UTG and Nexus many times but I am waiting now for 3.2 because of the emblem change it don't make much sense running for heroism emblems now.

My tank is a Druid.

Everybody is waiting for 3.2. It can take months (4-5) before it arives. We allready had a big content patch recently.

I play for fun, I want the gear but it`s not like I`m not playing because in a few months I get better badges.
