I recently decided to purchase a new PC to multibox on which comes with Windows Home Premium 64 bit with the option to upgarde to Vista Ultimate 64 bit for about $97 more. I've read a lot of posts from people saying how great ultimate is, but I was thinking I'll likely put Windows 7 on the machine as soon as I get it so should I even bother to upgrading to Vista Ultimate 64?
In a nut shell the PC being built will have amoung other things:
-i7 CPU
-12gig RAM
-1000W PS
-GTX 280 video card
-ASUS P6T Deluxe V2 mobo
so I'm not worried about being able to multibox on it, just wondering if I need Vista Ultimate since Windows 7 can be used and is getting such good reviews. Any help? :)

Don't waste your money ultimate is no different except a few different visual items, performance is same from home64 to ultimate64.

Like Enndoh said - there is no point in getting Ultimate - the only reason to get it is to run on (multiple) VMs which is not something you want to do for boxing anyway
If you have the option you could also get a bare / no OS and get windows 7 for free until next year

That's what I'm doing. Running fine and dandy on Win7.
Unfortunately I had to turn down the details a tad, 4x multisampling instead of 8x tripled my framerates from 25-75...on XP32 I was able to run 'ultra', full-max detail wow on the main window, even when boxing.

If you can find a cheap retail version off ebay I would get ultimate to save you the hassle of buying Win7 later on after you've enjoyed using the free version. I had gotten my retail version off ebay for $47.00. It was a steal. Having multiple computers in the home OEM versions is a no no for me so it's retail all the way.

Ultimate has one selling point: built-in Windows Media Center. If you're building a PC for a home video center, then it's worth it. For everyone else, as the above folks have said, no. ;)

I have media center on home premium, as I said, afaik, only VM support and some additonal useless stuff like screen savers, etc.. are the only benefit of ultimate (that and marketing)

Vista isn't worth anything at any point at any time ever. Period. Unless you're aiming to waste money for pretty graphics, which unfortunatly most of my friends are; so when the -innapropriate substance which originates from an ass- hits the fan, it's me who gets called at 3 in the morning to fix it. Don't waste your money and time, go with Win7 or Windows XP Pro.
