I tried it a couple years ago and gave up after the first month. After 3 weeks of heavy mining and missions, I had enough money to buy what I thought was a pretty nice ship. But, then I learned it was going to take me two more months of skill training to be able to even fly it. Is it still this way? Are there ways around the long training times?

well learning skills can still take a long time to do depending on the skill itself. but you can learn the "learning" skills which will decrease the time other skills take to learn sometimes by a significant amount. Best advice is to get EVEHQ and put characters in there and setup a Queue it will have a button to click on it that tells you what learning skills to learn and in what order to get the fastest times possible. also with neural remaps you can tailor your attributes to increase skills learning as well once per year for toons already made, new toons get 1 bonus remap when they start. as for further info it would get really techincal and overly complicated for now. if you do start playing again look me up and ill help if i can. In game name is Captian BrewSir.
hope i helped a little.

holyrthnyou is right about minmaxing training but to answer your question EVE still has very long training times for most everything. A multiboxing option is to have several chars each highly specialised in one area rather than having a single charcter who can do everything.
Some ships can be learned pretty quickly, where 'pretty quickly' means within a month or two if you optimise. Serious ships take a lot longer...
However it has been said that you can have good old fashioned PVP fun with even a week or two provided your willing to join a corp.
Nature of the beast.

mmm for example when i did Battle Ship lvl5 it took me 33 days more or less. or Large Hybrid turrets, that one was only 22 days i think. :pinch:
so yeah it takes some time some of them.
But on the positive side, there is ways to pay your playtime with in game cash. and its not very hard to scrape up what you need when you get some better skills/EQ ect.

There are plenty of ships you can get into quickly. Frigates take a few hours, Cruisers a few days to a week, and battleships at worst two weeks. A decent rule of thumb is to then double that time to consider getting appropriate equipment for said ship. Once you get into the more specialized ships (tech 2) you're looking at 1-4 months. You can have a lot of fun with a the mundane tech 1 ships while you're learning to fly something more specialized. Doing all of your learning skills up front eats up nearly two weeks which is kind of boring but well worth the diversion from gunning straight for the fun stuff since you'll get there ~20% faster. It seems like a long time when you're starting out, but it gets easier with time, once you learn to fly something fun you can put the next milestone on the back burner and the waiting game isn't as bad.
