I’m looking for an explanation on the storage of macros.

My understanding is that macros were changed to be stored on the server instead of locally. This included both general and toon specific. Today, I logged on to one of my characters and all the general macros are gone but the character specific ones are fine. I checked the macros-cache.txt and macros-cache.old and they are empty and no help to me.

We have multiple computers and accounts in the household and depending on which of the kids are playing, an account could be used on different computers at various times. It seems as if whatever general macros are saved locally replace those that were previously created.

I don’t understand how this is happening… I’m just sick thinking of all the work I’ve lost cause of this. Naturally, it couldn’t have be a dps’r I could copy and past but my freaking healer!

Thanks

I can't help explain how Blizzard store their macros but I suffered exactly the same problems last year as I use 2 PCs.

I took it as the final push to move to a bar/macro addon and went for Trinity, now Macaroon, and haven't looked back, using Macaroon for all single and multibox chars.
I now control where my macros are stored, so I can move them around between chars and PCs.
I back the Macaroon files up, so I never lose my macros.
And it helps immensely when setting up a new team... create a Macaroon layout with the basic buttons/macros and then copy the Macaroon file to the other chars, saving loads of time.

Won't help you retrieve your lost macros but will help you never lose them again...

Thanks for the reply moog. Your tip will definitely fit the bill to prevent this from happening again.

Macaroon, here I come...
