View Full Version : Low Elemental Shamen DPS in Heroics?

Hey all! I just got my first full team to 80 over the weekend and I've already started Heroics! So far I've downed Gundrak, Drak'Tharon Keep (F Novos!) and Culling of Strat (not timed) on Heroic!
Now as soon as the Shamen hit 80 I had some gear all ready for them. The Revenant gear from Leatherworkers and some Jewelcrafted rings/necklace. I've also already picked up a couple purples for them in Heroics.
I'm watching their DPS on Recount and they are all holding anywhere between 1200 and 1500 DPS for the duration of the instance. This seems rather low. Is that about right or should it be much higher? They are all elemental spec'd with some Enhancement thrown into the necessities.
Basically what I do is start each pull with a 4x Chain Lightning, then start using my single-target macro until the individual mobs are dead. My castsequence macro goes as follows:
/assist party1
/castsequence reset=target lightning bolt, flame shock, lava burst, lightning bolt, flame shock, lightning bolt, lava burst, lightning bolt
I originally did not have that first lightning bolt at the beginning, but sometimes when mobs die fast, right after a lava burst, there is alot of downtime waiting for that recast to come back, so now I have it filled with LBs.
Any thoughts? Suggestions?

Your macro does a flameshock, lava burst, lightning bolt and a flame shock lava burst again...
LvB 1.5 second cast, LB 2 second cast and the flame shock is 1.5 second GC = 5 seconds
Aka your shamans does nothing for 3 seconds unless my brain is mailfunctioning and the CD On LvB is 6 seconds?
I would recomend you to try and stay away from castsequence macros with caster dps, main reson is heavy loss of dps when you pop bloodlust since your macro will be waiting for LvB to get off cooldown.
I would agru that the flameshock glyph is better for you atm then the 10% extra damage on lava burst, but im not realy that good with calcing out dps.

There is a nice /castrandom macro for Elemental Shaman DPS floating around (I believe Fursphere wrote it originally) that works quite well.

maybe you could link your gear ... just tested my lvl 70 5x shammies yesterday on the lvl 70 dummies and my dps was about 1100, and almost 1500 with heroism.

Well the thing is, I really dont know if my DPS is low or not. I'm wondering what some other folks out there are getting for DPS when they first start heroics. For all I know, 1200-1500 is normal.

Can you post your armory or spellpower/haste/crit/hit ?

Fresh 80 with only crafted epics my sham were pulling 1700-1800 dps in heroics for an overall run - spiking a bit on boss fights etc with BL/Heroism .
Grab the macro the Fur posted and report back if it made any difference for ya.

I think my shamans where at about 1500dps for the entire run when I first started with blue gear. In 3 weeks at 80 that has moved up to 2200dps. Boss dps used to be 2000 (bloodlusted) its now 3100ish. I hadnt thought about bloodlust affecting my cast sequence meaning my guys are waiting for lvb to come off cooldown. I will have to watch them more closely next time I login and tweak it a bit. If I can squeeze a couple of hundred more dps out Ill be happy :)

My dps is around 1500 but was 1200 when I just dinged 80and my gear is still pretty bad - I do see spikes up to 2000 on some fights. Check with recount that you don't have misses - maybe you need more hit ?
Grats on doing so many H right from the start - I'm still struggling in Gundrak ;(

Your shammy DPS shouldn't be low compared to other DPSers in similar gear. My shammies are usually at or near the top of my DPS when I'm running 10-mans with similarly geared mages, locks, hunters, and boomkins.
They pull more than 3K DPS without bloodlust, though that is with a few 10-man buffs, though I'm having to put in more +hit than you should running heroics since I have to hit the magic 288 +hit to cap it (with a boomkin fairie fire +3% to hit buff). My teams are fairly well geared. About 2 months ago I made the shift from /castsequence to click DPS macros on all of my toons. Took forever to set up, but DPS went up across the board. However, shammy DPS saw the smallest jump, so a good /castsequence for your shammies is probably reasonable to stay with for a while if you don't want to rewrite macros right now.
Information about the /click type DPS macros are also in Fur's thread.
My shammy's names are Stonecow, Blazecow, Windcow, Pantero, and Windcow on the Magtheridon US server if you want to look them up for any reason.

Im 90% sure its your macros, your gear is bad but your focusing on the right things. There is nothing to say about your spec either so you should def work on your macros.

Ok, so I tried the macro posted by Fursphere last night. It definitely made a difference. In the few Heroics I ran last night, they averaged around 1700 DPS, after some fights it would be as high as 2000.
So here is my armory for each:
Prothan: http://www.wowarmory.com/character-sheet.xml?r=Uther&n=Prothan
Drothan: http://www.wowarmory.com/character-sheet.xml?r=Uther&n=Drothan
Trothan: http://www.wowarmory.com/character-sheet.xml?r=Uther&n=Trothan
Crothan: http://www.wowarmory.com/character-sheet.xml?r=Uther&n=Crothan
I mostly focus on Spellpower/Crit with gear, but also end up getting alot of Hit/Haste also.

Your hit rating is too low. Shamans need 79 hit rating to never miss with their spells in heroics.
As for your macros, spell rotations highly depend on your latency. My ping is usually at about 250 to 300ms. Am getting the best DPS with pure lightning bolt (with the random chain lightning for larger packs) spam. I've tried a lot and can't justify using any kind of FS/LvB spellrotation. Sad but true.

Which of the macros did you end up using (there is a zillion in the thread - I ended up with a few variants (including removing some /use etc... because somehow it makes my dps go lower...))

Hit rating is like the bane of my existence on my shamans. I swear, their is like zero gear that has decent hit rating on it unless I go with cloth or a blue where I already have an epic. Most heroics, during trash pulls, my pally outdps' my shaman, but half of that is because my pally's prot set is Naxx25/Ulduar10. During boss fights, or at the very least sustained dps fights, I'm capping around 2500. One of the things I realize is that since I'm not taking "single" healer, the dps across the board is going to be lower, but ultimately will be increased by the 4th dps in the group. So, pulling 4x shaman with each of them at ~2500 dps = 10k dps, which is the equivalent of a normal group having 3 dps'ers doing 3.3k dps (give or take).
Lack of DPS is rarely ever a problem in any of the heroics that I'm doing, even if my dps is low.

I ended up ditching chain lightning cause of the mana usage.. Slightly higher dps is fine but when you have to drink 2-3 times more an entire instance, doesn't seem worth it.
I don't have the flame shock glyph either because i dropped it for glyph of thunder. So the /castrandom macro probably wouldn't work for me.
Mine is /castsequence flameshock, lava burst, lightning bolt x4
I'm pretty happy with it none the less

I actually get mana issues myself during boss fights or pulls of 4 or more. I just assumed it was a gear issue, but I hear slot of boxers say their Shamen never go OOM. So what am I doing wrong? I keep a mana totem up most of the time.

are you refreshing watershield like a fiend?

I'd say I refresh it every 5 minutes, or whenever I notice the orb not floating around the Shamen.

Hrm. Well, between Mana Totem (or Blessing of Wisdom), WaterShield and Judgement of Wisom I have a really really tough time running OOM while nuking/healin.

I normally see anywhere between 1500-2200 dps, depending on how fast I am taking mobs down. So real bursty, the toons are not all wearing the same gear my highest one seems to stay steady from 1850-2200 the other 2 vary with my straggler dropping to the 1500 range all the time, the straggler also seems to have mana issues not to the point of going OOM but getting close to it the other 2 dps have no real issues and the priest never runs out of mana unless I get most of them killed then OOM becomes and issue with me rezzing the others. I
You should probably go into UK you should be able to clear that no problem and do the first boss of UP. I can clear, Gun, UK, Strat, and the others I can do some of the bosses. Dont do much in HoS or HoL, Nexus, not because it will kick my butt but because I am lazy and dont like those places.
