Trying to 3box WoW with a 4870 ATI 1gb vcard has been a pain for the last couple of weeks with the constent crashes and general wierdness so here is what I did it just might save a family member from getting stabbed or your wife beat to death with a keyboard.

- Uninstall the ATI driver
- Run CCleaner until if finds no more conflicts, I did a restart between each registry scan and fix Link ('http://www.ccleaner.com/')
- Reinstall ATI v8.11 Link (XP) ('http://drivers.softpedia.com/get/GRAPHICS-BOARD/ATI/ATI-Catalyst-811-Display-Driver-XP-32-bit.shtml')

System this worked on:
- 3.16GHz Duel Core (E8500)
- 4GB ram (800MHz)
- XP 32bit

you should try the 64 bit release of windows 7. all these issues started when you tried boxing? if so your issue might be the ram limitation which if i'm not mistaken includes all dram and vram combined. and since the RC edition of 7 is free all you have to do is go to the microsoft's website to obtain it, give that a shot (prior to doing so grab all the 64 bit drivers for you mobo, vcard, and all extras you have) and give it a shot and see what happens.

My 4870 does that sometimes with just one wow client open.

It crashes wow and screws up your display until you restart right?

If you find a fix for it let me know, I've tried rolling back drivers and stuff and it doesn't seem to work.

Hmm that's interesting Drecan I will have to look into that, also I did not realise the 32Bit operating system included ALL ram in its cap, good to know.

Woof try doing the registry clean when you reinstall your drivers see if that helps, cause I to tried down grading drivers but it did not work, however when the registry was cleaned it fixed the problem.

Hello,
i had a similar issues with my Sapphire ATI Radeon HD 4870 512MB DDR5 and i found some info on AMD forums about it.

i am not sure if it applies also to your card.
I just upgraded my card's bios to latest version and since that time no more black screens or squared artifacts. I am running on new bios and latest Ati drivers without CC for 6 months now without any problem.

Hey this is Woof, I change my username.

So I figured out my issue after massive testing.

My CPU was overclocked in my BIOS to increase performance, which was making my computer unstable only when playing WOW. restored back to defaults and it hasn't crashed since.

I am successfully multiboxing with 2 ATI 4870 1gb cards (without crossfire). I use Innerspace to launch 2 of the wow's on the 2nd GPU and put the tank on the 1st GPU. Runs beautifully so far and I'm up to BC with my guys. I haven't gone to Dalarn yet with my 3 chars though...

I'm using Vista 64bit and 8 GB of RAM. I do not crash.

What is the temperature on your graphics card? Is it ever getting too hot and perhaps the reason for the crashes?

I have 2x ati 4870 512mb crossfired. I only have issues in Farcry 2 and Crysis Warhead. The fanspeed is at factory default of 40 %. My cards run idol at 78 degrees celcius, which will slowly own them. There are guides on how to increase the fan speed but it gets stupidly noisy. :<
