View Full Version : What's the best pet and talent tree for dual Hunters?

I'm fairly new to both WoW and Dual-Boxing, so pleave forgive any noob questions I might ask.

I recently started dual-boxing and I'm LOVING it. I use Keyclone and am playing with 2 Hunters. They are both level 29 right now and that's the highest level character I've got in WoW so far. Currently they are both going down the BM talent tree for the most part (with some must-have picks from MM that I read about). They both also have Wolf pets.

My question is: Am I taking the right path? I've been trying to decide if it's a good idea to have one of the hunters have a tank-style pet (like a bear for swipe and thunderstomp) or if they should stay the same. Also I don't know if I should try the MM path for them. Like I said, I haven't played the game long, so I don't know the ins-and-outs of hunter life.

For the most part, I play by myself, no grouping. I'd like to be able to do instances with just the two of them, but I don't know how feasible that is. With my hunters as they are now, if I get more then 3 mobs of equal level attacking once, one or both of my hunters tend to die. Would that change if one of my pets was a tank-type?

I know I've asked a lot of quetsions and I apologize for that. Any help would be most appreciated please. Linking to specific builds on Wowhead and giving specific examples would be AWESOME!

I would use 1 as a tanking pet from that tree like a bear and the other a dps pet like raptor or cat.

I always loved my boars... the first time I had 5 squeeling pigs attacked someone in Alterac Valley I laughed so hard it hurt.

I think I have Gorrillas now, they are supposed to be a good tanking pet but you will probably have to be a about 10 levels higher, they have an aoe thunder stomp or something like that.

You'll likely find that the Wolves will work just fine for now. I'd recommend that you turn off "Growl" on one to allow more available focus on the other pet for damage output, and leave 'growl turned on for the other pet for tanking. For world trash leveling, this should work fine. In Outland, you'll likely need a real tanking pet, such as a bear or boar, although you might be surprised how well your wolves can do.

As SOON as possible, get "Beastal Disipline" in the Beast Mastery talent tree. The extra focus regeneration makes a world of difference in both tankiing and damage output. I'd strongly recommend that you get that on both hunters before spending any talent points in any other tree. If memory serves, you can have both points taken at level 31. Later, when you have much higher level characters, I'd suggest the talent "Go for the Throat" in the Marksman tree. With both skills combines, your pets will use focus like crazy to hold and kill your targets. In my opinion, these skills make more difference than the type of pet you select.

If doing an instance with a tank, of course you'll want to turn growl off on both pets. If you're going to depend on your pets to tank elites in instances, you will for sure want tanking pets! Hunters are great at leveling, but if you plan on doing instances with just two toons, you'll need to outlevel or outgear them by a fair margin. Instances are a huge jump for world mobs. Good luck, and have fun!

I'd go Marks and get Go for the Throat right off the bat, and then dump full Beast.

I've done two different leveling specs Beast and Marks. And beast is by far the funnest/fastest/Safest. But go for the throat will help alot with all the new pet abilities.

Any tenacity pet will tank nicely with thunderstomp. I liked bears because they had the AoE swipe ability which was nice. The bird screech was okay, but it didnt do dmg so after it wore off the extra mobs would come after hunter.

Thanks for all the great advice everyone, I really appreicate it!

I especially like your train of thought Spook. Would you happen to have a Wowhead build or something I could follow with an explination of when to take what?

I especially like your train of thought Spook. Would you happen to have a Wowhead build or something I could follow with an explination of when to take what? Here's what I use as a leveling build. Beast mastery is just SO strong for leveling, and it really makes your pet shine, which makes the hunter so special, in my opinion. When you reach level 80, you may want to re-spec to survialist for raiding, as pets are nether needed nor welcome in most raid groups. I don't have a wowhead account, so this is the written version. Remember, this is what I do, it may not be the BEST, but it works for me.

Level 31 Hunter (22/0/0) You are at or near this point now

Beast Mastery (22 points)

Endurance Training - Rank 5/5
Increases the Health of your pet by 10% and your total health by 5%.

Focused Fire - Rank 2/2
All damage caused by you is increased by 2% while your pet is active and the critical strike chance of your pet's special abilities is increased by 20% while Kill Command is active.

Thick Hide - Rank 3/3
Increases the armor rating of your pets by 20% and your armor contribution from items by 10%.

Unleashed Fury - Rank 5/5
Increases the damage done by your pets by 15%.

Improved Mend Pet - Rank 2/2
Reduces the mana cost of your Mend Pet spell by 20% and gives the Mend Pet spell a 50% chance of cleansing 1 Curse, Disease, Magic or Poison effect from the pet each tick.

Ferocity - Rank 3/5
Increases the critical strike chance of your pet by 6%.

Bestial Discipline - Rank 2/2
Increases the Focus regeneration of your pets by 100%.

Marksmanship (0 points)

Survival (0 points)

After getting to this point, add the following points as you see fit. I build all the way out in the Beast Mastery tree before picking up the increased range from the survival tree, and the points in the Marksman tree. I take the Marksman talents prior to taking the survival talents. You MAY want to take the increased range points earllier on the slave and skip the improved hunters mark on him, always setting the Hunter's Mark with your main.

Level 76 Hunter (51/13/3) LV77-80 Add the final four points wherever you chose.

Beast Mastery (51 points) The above listed points are not duplicated here

Spirit Bond - Rank 2/2

Frenzy - Rank 5/5
Gives your pet a 100% chance to gain a 30% attack speed increase for 8 sec after dealing a critical strike.

Bestial Wrath - Rank 1/1
Send your pet into a rage causing 50% additional damage for 18 sec. While enraged, the beast does not feel pity or remorse or fear and it cannot be stopped unless killed.

Catlike Reflexes - Rank 3/3
Increases your chance to dodge by 3% and your pet's chance to dodge by an additional 9%.

Serpent's Swiftness - Rank 5/5
Increases ranged combat attack speed by 20% and your pet's melee attack speed by 20%.

Longevity - Rank 3/3
Reduces the cooldown of your Bestial Wrath, Intimidation and Pet Special Abilities by 30%.

The Beast Within - Rank 1/1
When your pet is under the effects of Bestial Wrath, you also go into a rage causing 10% additional damage and reducing mana costs of all spells by 20% for 18 sec. While enraged, you do not feel pity or remorse or fear and you cannot be stopped unless killed.

Kindred Spirits - Rank 5/5
Increases your pet's damage by 20% and you and your pet's movement speed by 10% while your pet is active. This does not stack with other movement speed increasing effects.

Beast Mastery - Rank 1/1
You master the art of Beast training, teaching you the ability to tame Exotic pets and increasing your total amount of Pet Skill Points by 4.Marksmanship (13 points)

Focused Aim - Rank 3/3
Reduces the pushback suffered from damaging attacks while casting Steady Shot by 70%, and increases your chance to hit by 3%.

Lethal Shots - Rank 2/5
Increases your critical strike chance with ranged weapons by 2%.

Haven't seen glyphs mentioned yet so I'd like to recommend 'Glyph of Mending' for your hunter with the tanking pet.

Btw, I know Turtles aren't the best looking pets in the game but they're still the #1 tanks imo. Shellshield reduces all dmg taken and if you have the glyph I mentioned above then you can easily heal your pet to full health before it wears off.
