View Full Version : Dealing with stragglers.
I've been having a small problem with a few slaves always straggling behind, to the point that on a short run, I have to pause an extra second to let them catch up before I start casting in order to get them all to cast at once, and on a long run, they get so far back that they'll break follow. I didn't have this problem before on a crappier pc but with my newer one, it happens all the time so I'm thinking it's just a setting I forgot somewhere. It gets so severe sometimes that I'm worried what it'll mean when I get flying mounts.
I'm running a Keyclone, 1 PC setup, Main window at 50 fps full graphics, slaves at 20 fps minimum graphics, Intel q6600 quad core, spread cpu affinity, 260 vid card with 1 gig ddr3 ram, 4 gigs ddr2 ram.

I was just wondering if you picked up a speed improvement talent on your main?
I know DKs and Pallys can get talents that improve their movement speeds and leave your alts behind.
it would be similar to getting the carrot on a stick trinket from ZG, everyeone has to have it if you use it.
just a suggestion
nope, this is happening on 5x lvl 10 shaman and 4x lock/1xpriest groups, and not even on all the slaves. 3 and 5 seem to be the usual straglers, 2 and 4 keep up just fine.

One thing i noticed on my group at one point is that 2 of them were still mounting the "slow" mount and the others were mounting the fast one. I use a macro /click of Autobar's mount button and it remembers the last mount you used - but some of them got reset on me somehow.
Use livestock - allows you to random mount and deselect certain mounts, slow mounts etc, so you only get a random mount from those you want to use. Has keybind support too. Also good for companion pets. This isn't a mounting problem, this is a normal running around problem where 2 slaves just don't keep up.

how is your pc otherwise?
are you using X64 ?
are any of the CPU maxed out at 100% CPU?
How is the memory situation, my wow's use apx 700m/wow , 5x makes that 3.5G so if you aren't using x64 it would be pushing the limit of a system with 4G of ram, I use 8G myself.
if your system is doing excessive paging then it would get slugish at the time it pages some parts of the game(s) out to the page file.

I must say I have never lagged out the slaves so bad while running that they lost follow, at least not when it didn't immediately precede a disconnect.

This is probably not the best solution, but you ~could~ use your slowest computer for your master.
Told you it wasn't the best solution.
I triple-box with three distinct computers. On average, they all have the same latency (which you would expect since they're all on the same Internet connection), but from day to day and even hour to hour their individual latencies vary from each other by up to 50 ms (maybe 100 from fastest-to-slowest) and no one computer is consistently fastest or slowest.
So, there are times when my main's pc is slower and when I run somewhere, the other toons on follow appear to be on top or even glitching slighly ahead of my main (at least from my Main's perspective), but from my others, they appear to just be following along rather closely).
In general, it doesn't get so bad that I loose follow except in cases where I'm on epic flying mounts and my pally has crusader aura on... I used to regularly lose one or both of my followers (and still do in phaze-heavy areas), though lately (and I don't know if it's recent patch related) that's been much less common.
I ended up adding a feature to MultiTool to give me a friendly warning when one of my toons loses follow. I ~think~ Jamba does one better and auto-strobes follow - don't know if that might be an option for you.

One quick fix that I can think of is reduce the resolution yeh play at.
Do you have the sound off on the all the others I think there's an option if its in the background the sound is off.
KIll the affects, biggest one is view distance.
Yeh can reduce the max fps for the background one as low as 5 maybe lower but never tried.
Another thing that'll help a lil is kill some services.
running anything else in the background?
The thing is that from every new area yeh go to starter area/old zone/bc/wotlk each zone requires more memory with dalaran being the worst area.
You can get away with 4 gigs of memory, 5Xwow with XP but vista needs more.

You need more memory.
Are you using XP or Vista? 32-bit?

No.
(With a 32-bit OS) A video card with 1GB RAM + 4GB RAM = ~2.8GB of usable memory. You're probably experiencing some latency when hitting your swapfile.
If you're using a 64-bit OS, try more memory.
Well, I got them to work fine today, changed a little fps things here and there in keyclone, and it worked fine, no straggling. I'm still planning on upgrading a bit the next time my geek friend who built my PC comes down to visit. It was his main gaming system for the last year, he stopped gaming, so it's mine now. 4GB of ram was plenty for what he was doing, but I can tell I'll need more. And I still need him to wipe off his old OS for a new one, if anything to get rid of the files and programs that he used all the time that I don't need. What's the best kind of OS to use for boxing? XP64? vista? windows 7? I honestly don't keep up on these things, I usually just ask my friend, and he can get his hands on pretty much anything.

Yeah, setting your slaves to 10 fps or less should fix your problem.

This is "latency lag" not "texture lag".
you need lower ping to the server.
I bet you were/are over 300ms to the server on the ones that lag far behind.

I recently upgraded from 4GB of ram to 8GB, which forced me to upgrade my OS from XP32.
First I tried XP64 since i hate vista, but XP64 sucks royally, so i had to end up using vista64.
Which is alright after you get all the permissions set up so addons can save their data etc.
