I'm currently running 1 druid (healer) and 4x hunters, all at level 37 and each hunter with different pet. I have a bear, cat, wolf, and a carrion bird. Everything is working ok at lower instances but how do they work out in outland instances. When my pet bear dies, one of my other pet can take damage. Would it be better if I went 4 bears and so i would have a backup tank incase a couple dies?
i wasnt aware that a hunter pet could tank an outland instance. or else why would there be tank classes :) it seems as though that group even if it was able to do some outland instances would have some troubles in northrend. but i dont know ive never tried it myself just my thoughts

When I ran my hunter team before 3.1, I ran 3 apes and 1 wolf with a druid healer. They can do normal instances in northrend just fine. I used the ping pong effect from my apes aggro to make it a little more healer friendly. I did not feel my team could do heroics though as it is just too much damage for them to take. Maybe if I teamed them up with a disc priest. I do believe there was someone on these forums that is running heroics with their hunter team. I don't remember who though.
Edit: sorry totally forgot your first question. With the changes in 3.1, it might be more viable with a turtle. You'd have to play around with it. but with their 50% damage reduction they are definately a strong tank pet. I've never rolled with a turtle before. Do they still attack while their shell shield is up?
thats cool to know :0 you learn something new everyday

My one-and-only current level 80 team is exactly what you have, although the druid healer is my main raider and is therefore massively over-powered for healing pretty much anything outside of raids.
Rather than me reeling off what I do (because I don't do things the traditional way, and each hunter has at least 3 pets :) ) it might be best if you had a look at the following links about pet tanking:
General: http://bigredrhino.wordpress.com/
Pet main-tanks OS25: [url]http://bigredrhino.wordpress.com/2009/04/28/pet-feat-heroic-obsidian-sanctum-mtot/ (http://bigredrhino.wordpress.com/2009/04/28/pet-feat-heroic-obsidian-sanctum-mtot/)
Pet tanking is viable - the -75% AoE damage is a God-send for some encounters - but it depends on lots of things and I have reservations as to whether it's REALLY viable unless your tank-pet owner and healer are actually raid geared.

What talent build works best? 4x beastmasters or a combination of MM for trueshot aura, and Survival for exposed armor.

I run several sets of 3x hunters & 1 shammy (alliance & horde on one server and an alliance set on another server).
Even as a 4 boxer - I can handle most instances alone just 2-3 levels above normal. Smoked through Deadmines, Stocks, SM, Uldaman and Marudon (great lvl 50 quest bow there) in Azeroth instances - was leveling so fast from RAF bonus that a couple fo runs & the quests would get me a couple levels. Did Ramps and BF at 63-64. Zangamarsh at 65-66. Farmed Consortium rep in Auchidon at 68-70. At 72-73 was doing Slabs easily and Heroic Zangamarsh instances at 75. I do take care to enchant up & have food & potions & scrolls when I run a new one.
My main Hunter team dinged 80 a few weeks back and I had been running 3x BM with Gorilladins to level all the way. At 80 after 3.1 I switched to one BM main tank, one MM for trueshot and one SV for replinshment/traps. Still have all three pets as gorillas - like the interupt ability. Works ok - macros were a little fussy. Not clear to me that it is really better than 3x BM. Still gearing my guys up - so haven't tried any Northrend instances (beyond UK & Nexxus) alone yet.
