Looking to upgrade to a core i7 and retain windows xp.
Has anyone run an i7 w/ Windows XP and give an idea on performance? Obviously there's the RAM issue, but will I run into another bottleneck? I don't like Vista and i'm not real excited about running dual-boot.
Here's the rest of the components:
* OS: Windows XP
* Processor: Core i7 920 (2.6ghz), Overclocked 3.2ghz, aftermarket aircooling
* Motherboard: Asus P6T Deluxe V2 1366 ATX Motherboard
* Memory: 6gb Corsair DDR3 1600
* Storage: 320gb x2 (Raid 0)
* Graphics: Radeon 4890 1GB

Have you tried xp pro 64bit. That would allow you to use your full RAM while retaining XP pro.

You would definately need xp64 to take true advantage of an i7, Ive never tried xp64 but from what Ive heard it does have a decent amount of issues with newer hardware, such as the new socket motherboards, ddr3 ram, etc. But I have no direct experience with xp64, just what Ive read on hardware forums. Basically I read enough bad stuff to just go with vista 64 over xp64.

Agreed. I just took the plunge into Vista 64 as well.

I'm running new hardware on XP64. What you've heard is old news. Since the consumer push for 64 bit and the option to downgrade to XP, there has been a huge advancement in drivers for XP64, not to mention there were already a lot of drivers for Server 2003 64-bit, which is the same platform, allowing you to use those.
I'm using a 790i Ultra with DDR3, and a 9800GTX with XP64, plus my machines at work are running on XP64 with anything from a hyperthreading P4 to a dual core. Not a single driver issue among any of them.

Make sure you grab SP2 for it if its not on the disc. (XP64 SP2 is on update par with XP 32bit SP3)
I am also on xp64 with a core i7 940 & 6GB DDR3 RAM
Also, with a decent air cooler, you should be able to get that cpu up to 3.6GHz fairly easily
