help with dual monitors

just picked up a 17inch lcd and want to use it as my slaves screen. just having some problems setting it up.

running both monitors (main is 22inch) off a VGA Y cable (2 into 1). and when i go into nvidia settings i cant seem to find where to set it as a dual display properly. i can get it as a "TV" display, but cant get the resolutions right, and they dont work as dual display like it says. ..

some setting got changed, now i cant boot in normal mode cus i cant see any windows as theyre all in some void thats ment to be showing on screen but isnt, atm im booting into vga mode, which is like safe mode, but im unable to change nvidia settings ><

edit: back to normal now, but only with 1 screen. so what do i do, will the dsub splitter work, or do i have to get a dvi cable and run both?
